Work your tail off, learn about the game and how to play it properly and you will usually win. I loved playing against great athletes though. They were the easiest to block out and ball fake. They relied to much on their jumping ability and were easy to get off the ground on ball fakes and easy to move around on a box out!! Those athletes tend to not be as physical! I hated playing against guys like me, big and heavy and fundamental, it usually turned out to be very physical with them!! Thanks for the compliements though!!!Hey man you earned all the compliements in the world for what you did and for what your still doing in the IBL..I think its far to say that there will never be a more dominate center than yourself to ever come out of Eastern Kentucky and I still havent seen a center come out of kentucky as good as since you graduated and thats my opinion on that..Much respect man.

Jeremy Jones was a good basketball player, but he didnt play any other sports. And Ryan stewart I would have to disagree with you on that one. I'm not doubting his ability as a basketball or football player, but he wasnt very much of an athlete. Until his death Billy Jay Hearne IMO would have been the best athlete to come out of Powell County.

Powell's had several players from the past far superior to the two you've mentioned. Nelson White from the mid-'50s, Winfred Hughes and Goose Goodwin, from the early 1970s, and another, Billy Jay Hearne, already had D-1 schools looking at him following his sophomore season in 1978, but he was killed in an auto accident before his junior year began.

\Um best Athlete to ever play basketball at prestonsburg high school would have to be without a doubt brandon peters, he was a horrible basketball player but this kid had so much god given abilities and the best genetics a kid could have. he was a phenominal basketball player, 4'6 40 time, had a high 30in vertical, and had pretty decent strength for a kid his size. also ortega, that was a given

LOOKAYANNER Wrote:Here's my opinion of some schools in the 14th region:
Knott County Central: Herbie Stamper, played for Morehead, but if you go back before consolidation it would be Glen Combs of Carr Creek, who played in the NBA
Breathitt County: Larry Noble, played for Austin Peay, and for Breathitt's '67 state semifinalist team.
June Buchanan: Clark Stepp
Leslie County: Tim Couch (led the state in scoring average his junior season)
Powell County: Nelson White
Estill County: Kiser who played at Louisville in the late '90s.
Owsley County: Jeff Moore, played college ball somewhere in Florida.
Lee County: Larry Stamper, played at UK
Wolfe County: Steve Johnson, played for Cornell
Buckhorn: Deaton from their state tournament teams.
I'm not familar enough with the schools in Letcher County, Cordia, Jackson City, or Riverside, to name a best player.
A school no longer around, Hazel Green Academy in Wolfe County, had a player named Jimmy Hollan that started for Alabama in the early '70s.
I have seen all of these players play. Good ones too.
Where are they now:
Herbie Stamper, teaching school in Clark Co
Larry Noble, lives in Lexington where his wife is a judge
Larry Stamper, retired school teacher, lives in Winchester KY
Jimmy Hollon, construction manager, lives in Alabama
Also Paul Smith from Owsley Co played at Old Miss or Miss State. Was Owsleys coach a few years ago.

My mother went to school with him...He graduated from Phelps and just average 60 some odd points a game his senior year.

Again, here is the link concerning Ervin at Phelps High School.... He actually just got inducted into the Phelps High School Hall of Fame (first ever) and his being named Mr. Basketball while at Phelps was PART of the reason!! He is an awesome person... I talked to him a little when he came and shot some ball in the gym before the alumni games began...

Kiser was a great player, and a great person. I never saw him play for Estill, but I did see him at Louisville. From Owsley - I would have to say Jeff "Moose" Moore. He was an outstanding overall athlete.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, I watched old games, but I also knew that I was going to have to work hard to get anywhere. PM me sometime and we can talk about history sometime. I like anything dealing with America before Reconstruction (1865) and sports history as well!!!

Here is a forgotten name..Todd Conley/Elkhorn City..(Ate Kevin Garnett up in AAU from what I heard) But I agree that Brian Johnson is the best player to play at Jenkins. He was a complete player to where Johnny Ray Williams was a scorer.. BIG DIFFERENCE! Both were VERY GOOD....
