while im at it, the best d-lineman we have hasnt played that much d this year at all. james may hurt his ankle at boyd county and has been only playing o-line so far he has been working his way back on d. but he has the size strength and athletic ability to be an impact player on d.he can stop the run and pass rush.

justin johnson was on fire again busted a 66 yard run for a touchdown and led all rusher wit 89 yds but didn,t touch the ball no more had only 4 carries was they saving his ankle or what took him out of the game wit 9.34 to go in the first half. after belfry took the lead on his run sophmore to talented for that i hope it was for health reasons:worthy:

I don't have a dog in this fight, but my freshmen year (1986) we Betsy Layne went to Belfry and they had us down 30-0 at the half. That was the final score as well because he cleared his bench in the 2nd half. Also, back in 2002 (I think) Belfry played Betsy Layne at Betsy Layne and Belfry was up big in the 2nd quarter. Haywood had his team start fair catching all punts. He did his best to keep the score down. Haywood is a class act in my book.

And yet in the sport that Pikeville hangs their hat on,football, they receive another embarrassing ass whipping to their county rival. You can have those "364" days but Im sure you, along with many other Pikeville supporters, would give up those other sports to relive those long ago glory days when you could actually compete with Belfry in football. This rivalry is no more, I remember when the Pikeville/Belfry week was IT but IMO it may be time to cancel this game and maybe replace Pikeville with Mingo Central. It could grow into a better rivalry and without a doubt be a more competitive game.

I'll give you Johnson is a great little back but questioning the coaches?? I'd be glad if the coach(es) took my child out if they were injured the previous game. Better safe than sorry!

IDK about that... Mingo Central lost again last night... Seems like their ducks are having trouble getting in a row too....

Now why would you go and have family playing against family in a Belfry-Mingo Central game like that? :redboxer: Just kidding.
But to address your statement that we "hang our hat" on football, not true. We have, for years, pursued excellence in every sport possible, even if not achieved, we strived for it. We've been at the top of the 15th for many years in baseball (along with Johnson Central and Paintsville), have always done pretty well in basketball, are making serious strides in volleyball and soccer, our ladies softball has been dominant for years, our golf team is dominant in the region, and our academic teams are untouched as far as excellence.
Football has become a numbers game. With a total of 382 students in the top 4 grades, with approximately half of those being boys, the numbers just aren't there anymore. I can remember years when we approached 500 students (or very close to it) in the top 4 grades, and had fewer sports for the boys to compete at, so more came out. Belfry has more to choose from, and therefore, more depth. I'm not whining, I'm pointing out a fact.
I for one, hope this rivalry game never gets replaced. Even without the numbers, it is still a good game. Take away that 2 minutes to start the 2nd half, and it is still a pretty competitive game. Again, congrats and good luck the rest of the season.

Could someone please tell me what Pikeville has won with any meaning in the last 15-20 years?

Judging by what ive heard from these teams so far this season, the pirates must have had something go wrong the 1st half because this shouldve been a blowout from the very start, not the second half.

So sad that all other schools cry so much about Belfry because of the wv border. Sorry that you guys cant stand the Belfry domination in football, but dont forget its Haywood and the staff that brings out the ability of the kids who play at Belfry! All the kids who come to Belfry want to Play there none of them are real transfers except for David Jones who was not respected by Yogi KInder so he left. You have to know why he came to Belfry to understant ,but he was a ligit transfer. Some kids came to Belfry this year because of the trip to mingo central long way compared to short trip to Belfry a few went to tug valley. The way you all talk makes it look as if wv football kills Ky football so sad. Belfry HAS WENT TO STATE :SEVERAL TIME WITHOUT A WV KID ON THE TEAM! Get over it lots of scools are combined and have transfers Shelby valley, pike central east ridge, prestonsburgh, sheldon clark have transfer and are/or combined . Teams have beat belfry Sheldon clark Won last two times. Quit making excuses as to why you cant beat belfry consistantly. It just makes you guys look like sissy cry bags!!! :moon:

Well I know 1 sport you've not won vs. Belfry in the last 11 tries. I wouldn't be surprised if Pikeville wanted to buy out of the contract next year.....and your also lucky that we didn't hang 70 on the scoreboard.

Now, now.. I wouldn't be gathering all my eggs just yet. Isn't Belfry the favorites in the region this year for baseball?

Final 4 in baseball in 2010, Regional finals against LC in 2011 (had the lead before a huge comeback by LC, they earned it), etc. Belfry has a history of getting to region in baseball and getting smoked.hh:

For the record, Belfry is picked to be one of the favorites. Returned ALOT from last year, only graduating a few players. Pikeville is always tough however.

How about a measuring stick of regional titles since 2000? Football, 7. Volleyball, 6. Girls Basketball, 1. Total of 14. What's the count for Pikeville (I literally have NO idea.)
09-18-2011, 12:43 PM
No doubt belfry isnt the best at everything, but we all know that football is the most popular sport in eastern ky. Belfry is competitive in every other sport. There are always talented athelets at belfry some of the reason they may not be as successful at them as they are football is coaching. Last years boys baskettball tam is proof of that. No team had any better players but Belfrys coach aint much! No disrespect to him but he is not a very good coach.

If Pikeville fans want to "brag" about their success in other sports I believe there are other forums on here that only discuss those sports. This forum is for football, as is this thread, so the talk should be about the total dominance and ever increasing gap between Pikeville and Belfry's football program.
But on a side note, how many region championships has Pikeville won in boys basketball over the last 20-25 years? Belfry has three, albeit 20+ years ago, but if Pikeville can base their longstanding tradition on three football championships that were won over 20 years ago why cant Belfry fans do the same in basketball?

Getting beat 1-0 by the same LC team that sent Pikeville home last year IMHO is NOT getting smoked. AND, just to make something clear, it was PIKEVILLE that I went to watch in the regional championship... NOT LC! GREAT group of young men who graduated last year from Pikeville... too bad the adults don't have the same amount of sense!

I agree with fieldofdreams...better to be safe than sorry if it was due to a health reason although if it wasn't, then that is between Johnson and the coaches. We all have to remember there is more than running the ball. I acknowledge it is a huge part of the game but as I have stated before, so is blocking, throwing, catching, etc... All I read from mr bojangles 007 is why not more running time or carries for Johnson. I would enjoy reading some post from him stating how he blocked well, what a fine young man Johnson is on and off the field, etc.. Does he not know this about him or does he not care about these things? Please remember it is BELFRY PIRATE FOOTBALL TEAM. Each game is different and the same thing does not work every time that is why there are coaches, not dads/moms, uncles, brothers...on the field making the decisions. For the statement, "too talented for that"...I hope that is not the attitude of people around him. I hope each and every player stays humble and has confidence but doesnât get cocky and feel that the team has to have them. As for Johnson, I hope he is OK.

Johnson is not a cocky child. He is a good, decent young man who plays with his teammates as he should. I do believe it's others that need to realize that there are 10 other young men on the field when he is as well as his other TEAMMATES on the sidelines. Ensuring his safety (ankle injury during Prestonsburg game) and not "padding" his stats to make the parent happy are smart choices for the COACH(ES) to make... NOT a parent! I'm sorry if this offends anyone but having a child who plays myself, I realize that I'm the parent and they are the coaches and decisions like this are made 99% of the time for the child's benefit!
