And it matters that some officials get excited in some games and get into it a little bit, what are they supposed to do, walk up and down the floor like robots and have no emotion at all, if they didn't enjoy it, then why do it, it sure isn't for the money. They could go and make a whole lot more money doing gradeschool and not have to be out all night long.

So I guess being a good ref to you doesn't have anything to do being in the right position to call, their judgement, being in shape to get up and down the floor, communicating with the scorers table and fellow officials about what is going on, keeping control in games, getting subs in and out, communicating with coaches, talking to players keeping them out of trouble, all that referee stuff you have no idea about, not to mention all the time on the road driving to and from games, for what, about 60 bucks, that don't even cover the gas and wear and tear on your vehicle, not to mention other things, but That sounds about right from all of you know it all fans in the stands. You have no idea what officials do to allow these kids to play this great game, and When you can go and get a shirt and a whistle and do better or even try to be better, then you can start talking about us officials.

Seems like this thread always gets started the weekend before the coaches rate officials. I wonder if some poor ref started it in hopes of getting a little bit of good PR, sounds like something some of those guys do, I heard some of them call every coach and beg for a good rating. It's crazy that people would do such things, everything is so political around here. If you can't do it the right way, with real hard work, it's not worth being at the top, but I guess that is just me, but I have never been in their shoes either, so I don't really know what all they go through. But surely they don't expect good PR, in a mostly fan based forum, no one likes the refs. Smile

Back a few years I would agree, but the game is starting to pass them up. They still get up and down the floor pretty good for old guys though. :worthy:

I saw him during a grade school game several yrs ago at Willard. He looked into the stands at a female fan from Lost Creek and told her to hush, watch the game, that she was only there spending her first of the months check. The lady went furious and went down to him, and Willard Prinicipal had her taken out.

I really did hear that with my own two ears.

I have not posted on this thread until now, but I have been reading the comments. I understand your frustration as a ref and I agree that you have a hard job! But there are 5-6 refs in the 14th region that causes a bad taste in the players, spectators and school officials. For example, when I was coaching, my team was playing in another region. One of the ref's began making sarcastic comments to the players, right in front of the fans. I noticed that the fans became irrate and the players were extremely torn up, so I called a time out and questioned them about what was going on. This ref had asked one of the players if they had won any games and they replied yea several. He then said to her, who did you beat, nursing home teams? I was livid and I waited until the game was over, which we won and waited to speak to this ref. I asked politely to talk to him about the comment and told him it was innapropriate. He told me to Go to ____ and told me to shove off. I told him I was calling the assigning secretary and asked his name. He said I don't have to tell you anything. I asked him one more as he walked off. The next morning a ref called me he said that he was one of the ref's at the game and that the other ref was unappropriate to the players and to me. He told me the assigning secretary's name and number and asked me to call him. He said he didn't want anything to do with this, because it was wrong and that he had already called him and he was expecting a call from me. My point is, if there are two or three ref's on the floor and one of them is doing inappropriate things, they should step up and report this ref. It does no good for the school authorities or community to report a terrible ref, nothing happens......all I ask of the assigning secretary was that he looked into these allegations and never assign him as a ref to our school. Referees come in early and sat and talk our talk to others they know. Any ref that makes a comment that he already knows who is going to win, before the game should be fired on the spot, which happened recently and was reported. The rest of the story on the other region ref, later that year in the 14th region, he was assigned to our boys team during the district tournament and you can guess how that went. He should have never been on the floor again for making comments to 14-15 year old children.

Another issue that shouldn't happen, a referee that has any affiliation with a school or county should never call in a game. It is too hard emotionally for them to call a game like this. Their human and their either going to overcall to show they are not bias toward their school or they are going to give their school little breaks. Either way, they should never be put in that position. If I were a ref, I would never want to call for a school/team where I had graduated from, worked, etc. It is not right to put them in that position, but this happens too often.

Again, I am not downing referees, you guys do have a rough job, and 99% of the time, you make one side of the crowd angry. That would not be a job I would want. But something needs to be done about the 4-5 that wear the black and white striped shirts and call themselves referees.

The best in the 14th
Dexter Campbell
Carl McIntosh
Pratt
Roy Spencer
Dirk Flinchum
Larry Thacker

The worst
Mike Melton
Brian Napier
Steve Poppas
Olinger (may not ref anymore)

Upincomers dont have a chance because Tommy Hall (assigning Sec.) Has his groups of officials and they are the only ones that get the big games. I dont know why the 14th even rates officials because Hall puts out his guys wherever he wants them.

I watch many games, not just my favorite teams, never miss a tournament, Ritchie and Stamper are by far the worst in the region and I am suprised Ritchie is still calling, it just shows the lack of depth at the officials rank. Both are too confrontational with coaches and fans.

I aint one to bash on any refs because its not the easiest job in the world but these two are by far the worst.

The 6 guys that called the 14th All A finals done great jobs in my opinion. I believe they called what needed to be called and all the teams had chances to win, when a game goes to overtime, you definitely can't blame officials for the outcome. Wouldn't mind seeing any of these guys in our district tourney.
Girls Championship: Dexter Campbell, H Bailey, B. Cook
Boys Championship: (Overtime) Flinchum, Ritchie, Hutton

Cook is the WORST ref in the 14th
and Hutton is a close 2nd but its between him and Don H. for 2nd tho :moon:

I always thought Johnny Webb was a decent official until I saw the foul call he made in the final seconds of the S.V./C.C. game. He obviously knew what he was doing. Shame!

I agree with those that listed the 14th's Brian Napier as one of the worst. Saw him during a game last week. He's totally whistle-happy. Won't let the game get any kind of flow. He made more calls in the game I saw than his two partners combined. Also in the game I saw he was a little one sided in his calls, fouling out all but one starter on one team. I don't like refs that make it appear they have an agenda in who wins the game. And he might not have, but it sure looked that way.
#60
correct me if i'm wrong but i remember for years i would leave gyms when pcc would play and think that Hutton had gave them some good calls now the past three years i think the same about hazard and not so much perry
