Powell County 2010
#31
i see Powell getting 4, 5 maybe even 6 wins this year.

Who is the coach at Powell now ?
#33
They had a ton of turnovers last year. Too many freshmen and sophmores in key positions. They will cut down on the turnovers this year. The big question is defense. It was horrible last year. Powell desparately needs a defensive coordinator. Coach Burchett has proven he can lead a team to score TD's. Now Powell has to start stopping people. Being bigger and stronger will help this year.

I heard last night your old dcordinator from the first ever winning season might be coming back. any truth to that?
#36
That would be a pleasant surprise. I don't look for it to happen though.

2008 team has 4 players playing college football, 2009 team has 1 that may go play. Still not even sure on that. I was at a couple Powell games this last year and numbers were down and players were small and weak. It just don't seem to me that the athletes are there and if they are there, there not on the football team. Plus, lack of support doesn't help any. Empty bleachers last season. I feel bad for the kids in Powell Co.
#38
You are correct support was down. There is still some support and winning is what fills the stands. Last years team was a sophomore dominated and there are several good athletes in that class. This years team has only 3 returning seniors from 2009 team. If we can find some defense, we will be okay.
#39
Once Coach Burchett establishes what he is trying to do at Powell they will get the fan support and if the kids buy into the offense they will be able to suprise some people. When make kids come to practices everyday it does drive some good players away because they don't think they need to practice. With time they will start shine.
#40
Burchett will not tolerate missing practice. Burchett is trying to a program. No tradition at all. That is the reason athletes are not out. Next years junior class does have good athletes out and more are coming. I think you will see a difference. Players have bought into his system. Last year was a downer. Coaches left the program and took supposedly best player. The players hung in there. There must be improvement this year. I think there will

Let's hope he stays longer. I think he intends to. One thing for sure, Burchett seems like a good man and really wants to do things right.

Heard that weight lifting has been going good. I am anxious to see the numbers for spring practice. Sure would be nice to pick up 4 or 5 new players off the basketball team.
#44
Numbers were good for a few days but after a few days everyone quit coming. Now that it is over half of the football team is running track and not even lifting weights so numbers are down right now.
#45
Powell Co. will be 2-9 again in 2010.
#46
why is the numbers so low at mighty P.C.? How do you expect to build a program ever with no commitment or dedication?
#47
That is the way downtrodden programs are. It is hard to get kids out. Numbers were starting up and staff left. Current coaches will just have to fight through this and not make excuses. Next year's junior class has the potential to do some good things. Coach Burchett is track coach and many football players are with him now. Some are playing baseball. We will be better this year but it is hard to predict number of wins.

If Powell can't win 5 or 6 games this year, there is a major malfunction because that group with Taulbee and Hale is a good bunch. If you run the spread you might have a chance at 5 or 6 wins.

You are correct. Junior class next year is strong. Should be great improvement. Lewis Co. and Morgan Co. are on the rise. Estill will be strong this year and Breathitt is down a little but they still are Breathitt. Powell should be able to compete and find some wins.

Well that is better than the 0-10 season you picked for us last year...

Coach B isn't anti pass. He will throw it around a bit but we couldn't throw it last year. We should be much better in that department. I don't think we need to go spread though. We can score just as easy with the belly. If we cut down on the turnovers last year, we would have put much more TDs on the scoreboard.

Your qb is a SPREAD QB. Tall kid who can run or throw and spread would get 11 guys out of the box and open it up for Taulbee. Defense has got to get lined out.
#53
You need 3 good backs to run that belly option. Poco has 1. Hale needs to be back there in the pocket not coming right down the line where he's gonna get hit every play. Put him back there where he can scramble.
#54
DJ Jones has the potential to be good running back. Taulbee is a natural. Charles will surprise this year at full back. Hale has speed and is pretty strong. I like the spread but Burchett is a "belly" guy. This is a critical year for the Powell program. Which direction we will move?

I hear Hale aint the QB this year. Some new Cox kid??????????
#56
Cox is not new. He was JV Quarterback last year. That would be a shock if it happened. His dad is assistant coach however.
#57
How would it be a big shock? Justin Cox is a very good QB. He could have started over Hale last year but he got nervous really easy probably due to being a Freshman. But now that he has some experience look for Hale and Cox to both split time in and out of the QB position. Justin Started at FS last year also so he is a tough kid. And he will be a very good player.
#58
Sorry. Was not meant to be a knock on Cox. He is a great kid. As you say, Cox will be a good player.
#59
I think Powell will be improved from last year and could end the year with 5-5 record.
#60
Look for great improvement and help from Devon Sparks, Austin Johnson, Josh Spencer, Keenon Tiller, DJ Jones, and Chris Lane just to name a few. There is a need to find a kicker.
