''I think DeSales will stop the run just as Corbin did, but we are 60/40 pass. Have you guys faced any good passing teams this season? I know Holy Cross kept it close and they like to throw it. NewCath is more run out of the spread and not that great a passing it. ''
And this will be the question that will determine the game. Central hardin, Fern Creek,Seneca all threw the ball and had great athletes(6A teams). The pass defense has gotten much better as the year has gone by.
Cov HC did not do that much with the passing game,it was ALL Walker's legs and scrambling,he played like Pat White or something that night. He should have been sacked about 10 times but escaped most of them.If the Colts can get pressure on the QB,they win. They have 2 very good DE's and some big DT's.

CH, FC, and Seneca have better athletes than Prestonsburg, but do they have a better quarterback? IMO, no they don't. You could come up with an argument if Smith had played this season for Seneca, but he didn't. DeSales is going to be very tough and I do expect the Colts to get pressure on our quarterback (Burchett), but will they give him too much time to pass? Because he has shown he can escape the pocket and miss tackles and throw a strike. He can also beat you with his legs, as he had to do this versus a very good front 7 in Sheldon Clark in the rain.
Its going to be a great game that will come down till the end IMO.

... Like Redneck said, I'd wad up the page in the playbook with the jet sweep and throw it in the garbage cuz it hasn't worked all season. ... P-burg's running game needs to consist of running it between the tackles. If they can average 3 yards per carry or more, then it will open up P-burg's passing game even more. When you face teams from the Louisville area, they are more used to teams passing the ball opposed to Eastern KY teams who rarely see a pass.
I think Prestonsburg is well conditioned and I don't think the amount of players on the rosters will make a big difference.
I'm going with my heart and saying P-burg by 7 to make it to their 2nd championship game this decade. Go Blackcats!!
You gotta dance with the one that brought you, guys...
There is NO way the coaching staff is gonna start running between the tackles this late in the season. Prestonsburg does NOT have the kind of size/strength necessary to do that against a team the size of DeSales, especially when so many Blackcats play both ways. If P-burg tries this, it risks getting run into the ground in the 4th quarter !!!
The jet CAN work...but moreso, the power sweep can work to establish a running attack. But, it means the passing attack needs to work early and force the defense to think pass coverage FIRST. Once LB's and safeties are dropping early after the snap, the corners open up to the run game. Corbin never adjusted into pass coverage, so P-burg passed all game long.
For this team, EVERYTHING must work from how defenses adjust to stop the Blackcat passing attack. We're wayyy past the point where P-burg can run whatever it wants in the playbook and have it work.

Yet another good post from oneijoe.
I just hope we come out and jump on DeSales early. I believe our conditioning is good enough to hang in their with the new bodies DeSales throws at us. Hopefully our defense plays just as well as they did against Corbin to, because the Colts are going to try and run it right down our throat. But they run the ball a different way than we are used to seeing, as they'll send some guys in motion and use the quarterback more effectively.

Even though I am the lone warrior from the Ville it seems, you guys have been great to discuss the game with, with no trash talking, etc a real refreshing change from some boards.
DeSales has a mobile QB named Ryan Johnson who can run the ball and throw when needed. He is also a GREAT kicker who usually gets a touchback and has made multiple 48 yard FG's this year.Heck of a punter also. We run a version of the spread, but a power running spread, and also will mix it up and go power I or wing T on certain drives,it really gives the offense multiple looks. I have no doubts the offense will move the ball, its gonna be up to the defense to win this game.

I feel the exact same way about Prestonsburg.
Our special teams has been the best its ever been that I can recall. Our sophomore leading receiver is our kicker/punter. He had a 35-yard field goal in our last game versus Corbin. He's put a few in the endzone as well and has booted some nice punts this season. He hasn't been that accurate on extra points though, but its mostly because he's gassed because he rarely ever gets a break. Sounds like you guys have a real special player in Johnson and a few of your backs.
I appreciate your kind words also.

Our KR's have taken it the distance quite a few times this year, as have our PR's. Most teams recently seem to be punting it out of bounds and squib kicking. If your kicker can consistently force a touchback, then it will definitely help Desales.

Like you said, I have no doubts that P-burg will be able to move the ball. I'm just wondering if Prestonsburg will be able to stop Desales on offense. That's really been the big question for Prestonsburg all season. We have a bend but don't break defense, but you can't live on that type of defense every game because eventually you will break. Now is not the time for those "breaks" to occur.

p-burg in a close one
11-23-2009, 01:13 PM
DeSales numbers are the primary concern, however I have to say this is the best conditioned P-burg team I have seen in years. In close games the Blackcats have pulled away in the 2nd half, but I don't see that happening this Friday.
the keys will be to score early. Make DeSales play on a long field with good punts and kickoffs. Limit the big play. Make no turnovers and no penalities.
I can't see P-burg shutting the Colts down, but they need to slow them down and make them earn every score, then turn on the offense.

And so is this DeSales team, that team was mostly sophomores then, now there are 40+ upperclassmen ,mostly seniors. Big difference.

No doubt DeSales will be our toughest game of the year. Hopefully, we will be their toughest game also.
I remember the game from 2 years ago. Coldest I have ever been at a high school football game...and that includes the State Championship games last year with snow flurries at Papa John's. The measuring stick at our house for when it is cold outside is "Is it DeSales cold?".
DeSales was a very classy team and their fans were first rate. It is always a pleasure playing teams like that. Just hope for a different outcome this time around.

Glad to see Prestonsburg keeping up their undefeated run. This win would be incredible for them. I am more familiar with DeSales than I am Prestonsburg being from where I am. I know DeSales has a big-bodied team as always and a great quarterback in Johnson. He has been the starter for three years (I believe, correct me if I am wrong) and knows this offense like the back of his hand. The Colts like to mainly run the ball though (as the DeSales fan has been posting above).
I've heard from a friend how good a quarterback Prestonsburg has and how his decision making is the number one strength of his game. I also heard he is a heck of an accurate passer that puts the ball right on target 90-95% of the time.
It should be a great game with two great quarterbacks facing off. I will pick Prestonsburg in a very tight game on the road. I know they want to redeem themselves from their loss here two years ago. By the way, has Prestonsburg ever won a state title or been to a championship game?
Someone said this game with be played at Southern's field and not Manual's field. Is that correct?

Yes. Game will be at Southern's field.
Prestonsburg has been to 2 State Finals: 1993 and 2001. Never brought home the big trophy, though. Hope this is the year...

Most likely Ft. Campbell. 2 time defending 2A champs. Big, strong, fast team. Led by QB Antonio Andrews. They are all the sons of the Airborne Army Rangers stationed at Ft. Campbell, so you know they are tough.
Ft. Campbell will be a tall order for any team that has to face them. They had a tough game against Murray last week, but they are the 500 pound gorilla of class 2A.

This is going to be an extremely tough game for Prestonsburg (not to mention the drive all the way to Louisville). I really think that the Blackcats can win. They had a 13-7 lead in the first half the last time these two teams met if I remember correctly. DeSales ended up dominating the rest of that game, but it was a pretty good effort from P'burg back in '07. The thing is, this Blackcat team is much better than that '07 group. I understand that DeSales is better too and still have the same quarterback as they did the last time these two faced off, but this game will be played differently. DeSales will still run the ball as they did two years ago, but the Blackcats will be passing the ball (unlike '07).
It's going to be a good one and I hope to make the trip to watch.
