the colts did have a terrible defense most of the season. but there were some great players and al ot of good players on that d and when th playoffs started they turned it on. also bob sanders was out for the majority of the season and when he came back that ligh a fire under the colts d. not only that, for every star the bengals have on o the colts had one better except for rudi johnson. but indy had 2 guys whose combined stats were better then jihnsons so that canceled out. manning is better then palmer, harrison is better then uchosinco, reggie wayne is better then houshmanzota, glenn is better then anderson. better special teams, indy was better. and all the off the field stuff sure didnt help either. how man bengals do ya think are gonna get arrested this year?

As forr the window closing....the window is wide open and anybody that knows a football from a grapefruit will tell you that this is one of the most talented teams in the league. The one thing this team needs more than anything is to mature.
you dont win games with talent alone... just ask dan snyder.

Bengals need a solid defense, that's it........ they need to go into free agency, look who's available, and draft the rest................ If they can at least put some people on the field who will at least slow people down, they'll be very, very tough to beat

More Cowbell Wrote:I agree that the team is one of the most talented in the league, at least offensively. I also agree that their 'window' should still be open for a few more years, just like it was for the Colts.
That, however, does not take away from the fact that the team has done almost nothing to improve itself this winter, but yet have sustained several FA losses that have made the team worse now than they were a couple months ago.
The players they lost in FA were not impact players. Besides...this defense was ranked almost at the bottom of the league, so what if they lost some? Why keep them? They weren't doing any good with them. Let's see how the draft goes then we can determin how much they have helped themselves in the offseason.

well id rather have a bunch of less talented guys who wanna play then a bunch of guys whod dont wanna be there. if you have that many guys gettin arrested then football is obviously not a big priority. chad johnson complains about the coaches not knowin what theyre doin every time things are goin bad. you have chris henry decidin that he doesnt feel like goin up for a catch. the secondary is too old and they just flat out cant play on defense. i say after this year you wont be seein so may bengals fans. i dont know you or how long youve liked them but as soon as they got good all kinds of bengals fans came out of the wood work around here. im sorry but i just dont think they can compete with powers in the afc.

broncos, patriots, colts, ravens, chargers. those are the best teams in the afc as of RIGHT NOW. this could change but they all have the best core players. cinci might be able to compete for a wild card since the steelers are gettin worst tand the browns just suck. but i also thank the jags are both better then cincinatti. i dont care about chad johnsons individual accomplishments, they mean nothing.

I look for a solid season this year for the Bengals and a healthy Palmer will be the difference maker not the defense. If he was healthy this past year we would have made play offs.

he had a solid year, I admit it could have been better, but we'd blow everyone away with any defense at all because our offense is very very high powered

The players they lost may not have been impact players, but they weren't scrubs either, and the loss of good, solid performers will still hurt. You're right, they were one the worst defenses last year and they had a lot of improvements to make, but now they need to do even more to fix things. If the defense was terrible with Brian Simmons and Kaesviharn, it stands to reason that it is even worse without them.
This is not a case of addition by subtraction, like when you get rid of a knucklehead. Until the draft is finished, the defense is worse now than it was before free agency.

All that said, I still look for good things from the Bengals this year. I have been a fan since back before Joe Montana broke my heart, and I really want to see them do well. I think the schedule sets up really nice for next year (finishing 2nd instead of 1st has some benefits), and a full year of a healthy Palmer with a hopefully healthy o-line should mean they will be able to light up the scoreboard.
It just disappoints me to see the front office sit idly by while the weak link (on a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations) continues to get even weaker.

he was healthy last year. he had a really good year, 62% completions and 4,000 yards. its not like hes much better than that cause thats about as good as you can get at that position unless your names peyton manning.

It also helps that Manning hardly ever gets his uniform dirty and accoring to Bob Bratkowski (Bengals offensive Co-ordinator) Carson Palmer got hit more last year than any QB ever in his system. Considering the patchwork Oline Palmer had in front of him last year makes his numbers all the more impressive.
03-21-2007, 07:02 PM
so are you saying palmer's better than manning?

No doubt theres a lot of ifs. Will Thurman return? Will Deltha Oneal get back to form? Will J Joseph continue to mature? Will Dexter Jackson stay healthy? Will Sam Adams get into shape? Will the young players (Geathers and Peko) continue to come on? But my biggest quarrel with the defense was...somehow you have to find a way to stop the run and get pressure on the QB.

I'm saying it's hard to compare 2 QBs when one is getting all day to throw and one is getting hit and hurried everytime he goes back to throw. I'm not saying he's better, but I think he's just as good.

Thats funny....I follow this team quite closely and I don't remember Chad saying anything like that about his coaches. Maybe you have a link where we all can read it.

i dont have a link but i can look. im gonna go get some info and ill get back with ya.

Not avoiding anything........I will repeat....if you go by talent.......Carson Palmer is every bit as talented as Peyton Manning. Who ends up being better depends on the supporting cast around them.

Do that.....Id be interested to read where Chad said his coaches didn't know what they were doing.

y alucked out, i couldnt find it. i really wouldnt know where to look for it at but i know it happened. if im not mistaken the bengals went on a pretty good loosing streak and chad wasnt gettin the ball much and he said in an interview that all they had to do is get him the ball and it wasnt that hard. something like that but i know he said it and ill keep lookin for it. it was all over sports center you had to of seen it.

Are you kidding me? JOE MONTANA, four Super Bowl rings (I think four?), and had good teams, but wasn't a stacked team every year like Mannings'
