If we don't hit the free agent market soon, we might not get any solid veteran defenders....... the draft can't cover everything. Especially with releasing Simmons but switching to a 3-4?? Even if Odell comes back, we could still use a few bigger run stoppers.

Just the Bengals getting back to what put them the laughing stock of the NFL. The upper management not wanting to put out the cash that others do. They think that since they have a good coach that they can rely on his coaching ability alone. Well fi he has no one there that can play and be coached now what good does that do.

I thought the Bengals were only $3 million away from the cap number. Isn't this the reason they haven't been able to be aggresive in the free agent market?

You are exactly right. After giving Geathers a big contract and tagging Justin Smith it took them out of the running for a bigname free agent. Had Joey Porter or A. Thomas been in the cards, they had the option to remove the franchise tag from Justin. The free agent pool isn't as deep this year as in years past.
BTW.....the Bengals are NOT switching to the 3-4.....according to Marvin Lewis.

Yes they are the Bengals. They are the same Bengals that won their division 2 yrs ago. They are the same Bengals that have one of the top 3 QB's in the game. They are the same Bengals thats offense (when clicking) is virtually unstoppable. They are the same Bengals that a lot of experts are billing as a serious Super Bowl contender next season. The '90's are over.

Hopefully they make some big moves soon. Or maybe they can get some good picks in the draft, hope they do that as well.

The players left in free agency wouldn't be that much of an upgrade from what they have now.
The Bengals will be fine.

I still don't quite get the decision to cut Brian Simmons. Yeah, the guy may not have been a game-changing type of player, but he was a solid above-average LB and a good locker room guy. Unless they were desperate for cap relief (which I don't think they were), it just doesn't make sense. At the very least, I'm sure some other team would have given us a draft pick for him in a trade.

I think it was a move to save $3 million plus per season. At least the Bengals let him go before FA started, that way his agent could get ready

Here are some possible picks in my opinion
Patrick Willis LB 6'2 240 Ole Miss
Amobi Okoye DT 6'1 317 Louisville
Adam Carriker DE 6'6 295 Nebraska
Darrelle Revis CB 6' 200 Pitt Jr.
I don't think they can go wrong with any of these with the 18th pick.

I know they were trying to save his $3 million salary, what I don't get is why. In addition to cutting him, they have lost several more salaries off the books during FA, yet haven't signed anyone new (that backup center from yesterday doesn't really count). If they saved $3 million, where did it go?
Finally, I have a problem with just cutting him. I'm sure someone would have given us at least a second-day draft pick for him.

Simmons was a well respected player. Personally, I hated to see him go as well. But what we have to remember is the NFL is a business and this was pure and simple a business move. As far as to where the $3 million went....I'm guessing that will go into the rookie pool thats used to sign their draft choices.

I agree that any of those would be great, but I don't think they should take a D tackle because I swear they said they were switching to a 3-4 on the website. Sam Adams in the middle taking up space, Justin Smith on one end, and we could draft Carriker or whoever's left for the other end.
I've said all along that I think they should take a linebacker in the first round, corner in the second, then a defensive end, safety, maybe tackles, and just keep padding the defense.

its just the bengals going back to the bungals. they missed there chance when palmer went down in 05 and now theyre gonna stop contending for a while. free agency keeps parody going in the nfl and u get a small window to make somethin happen. that window finally opened up for cinci after a very long time and now i think its closed again.all i can say to the cinci fans is i hope you all enjoyed it while it lasted.

You'll be eating your words........ We still got the draft and there's bound to be a few free agents left......... even if there wasn't, look at the Colts, they won a Super Bowl with a horrible defense.

well, as much as I hate the Bengals (lol, sorry Fritz, had to say it) Im glad they didnt find a way to get Porter. I lost sleep thinking about that, LOL..however, it would be VERY tough for me not to draft that Okoye kid from Louisville. That guy is only 19 years old. He was 16 as a college freshman. And he's a BEAST...he's quick enough and strong enough to be a nightmare at DE..and with rumors of them switching to the 3-4, thats the kind of DE they'll need..

I think its more like they won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning and there defense really improved in the playoffs when they got Bob Sanders back.

I respect the fact that it is his opinion. But he can elaborate instead of saying that it's just the Bengals being the Bengals. You took the extra time to type your opinion. That is all I am asking.

I saw that the team had said that they were switching to a 3-4 but someone on here posted an article that they were staying with the 4-3. If they do switch, they'll have Justin Smith on one end, Sam Adams in the middle, and then if they draft Okoye, they'd have a tough front line.
However, I'm hoping that they can pick up a corner in the first and a middle backer in the second because we don't have 4 solid backers right now to occupy all the spots. Defensive ends are usually available in the middle-to-late rounds. Then, after those picks, get another backer or two, and maybe a safety.

I'd like to see them go to the 3-4 too.....but according to Marvin Lewis in the article I posted....it ain't happening. But it's still a while till things get going....maybe something will change. I think they would do a lot better against the run in the 3-4.

The term "bungles" was started by Chris Berman back in the '90's. Don't you think it's time to come up with some new material? As forr the window closing....the window is wide open and anybody that knows a football from a grapefruit will tell you that this is one of the most talented teams in the league. The one thing this team needs more than anything is to mature.

No, it's just as funny now as it was then.

I agree that the team is one of the most talented in the league, at least offensively. I also agree that their 'window' should still be open for a few more years, just like it was for the Colts.
That, however, does not take away from the fact that the team has done almost nothing to improve itself this winter, but yet have sustained several FA losses that have made the team worse now than they were a couple months ago.
