John DeRossette was the assistant coach at Belfry 1988-89 under Philip Haywood. Followed by performing the same duties at Prestonsburg 1990-91 under Bill Letton as a assistant coach. He did a great job as the head coach at Betsy Layne 1992-1995. His ability as a Head coach and his record can speck for it's self over a great career at Prestonsburg.

Betsy Layne,
1992 0-9
1993 5-5
1994 4-6
1995 6-4

Prestonsburg,
1996 8-3
1997 8-3
1998 9-3
1999 3-8
2000 8-6
2001 13-2
2002 8-4
2003 7-5
2004 10-3
2005 4-7
2006 7-5
2007 9-4
2008 11-2
2009 13-1
2010 10-3
2011 5-6
2012 8-4
2013 7-6
2014 4-1

Over all record 160-100, he believes in playing a tough schedule year in year out.

Prestonsburg is 53-2-1 against Floyd county teams. The Blackcats lost to Wayland 14-6 in 1949 and Betsy Layne 12-8 in 1986, The only tie came in 1971 Wheelwright the score 6-6. Betsy Layne came close in 1995 in a double overtime loss 14-12. Coach Derossette record against County teams is 17-5 two loses came against Prestonsburg when he was the BL Head coach. The last lose that Coach Derossette had against a County team was Allen Central 12-13 game in 1995 as BL head coach about 20 years ago, he has never lost to a county team in his time at Prestonsburg.

WPRG was showing a throw back game last night from 1993, Betsy Layne vs. South Floyd. It was funny seeing Coach D in blue with his porn star mustache.

I know for fact John went to undergrad at EKU '83-'87 (he was my brother's roommate...lol). I think I must have flashed back a decade in my earlier post - that stuff happens to one later in life.

Very good !! It didn't occur to me to look for Wayland in my list of "P-burg vs other high school" table. Of course, Wayland was better known for basketball - they had a lot of really good teams.

2003 Record is 0-12 due to KHSAA violations. The entire season was forfeited. I'd also disagree with coach having a tough schedule. Usually has 2 strong, 3 equal and 5 weak opponents.

Throw out district games...there's no choice in those. Assuming one district opponent approaches "equal" per year (not always true), that would make your numbers: 2 strong, 2 equal and 1 weak non-district opponents per year.

What's wrong with that ?!?

Confusedhh:

I was actually being kind with my numbers.
Season 2014
Pikeville - equal and lost
SC - very very weak
Clay - very weak
Powell - very weak
PCC - maybe equal
BL - very weak
Hazard - slightly less than equal
SV - weak
Leslie - weak
Lawrence - less than equal

You have a coach that drops Belfry and picks up Clay and Powell. Plays Cooper their opening season and never again. Only schedules Perry on down years. Teams that consistently schedule equal or better than opponents are Somerset, Belfry, Hazard, Lawrence County, Perry Central, Corbin.... Those coaches play to get better for post season not build a winning resume and pat themselves on the back. JMO

If its true what the middle school coaches let happen at Besty lane game might get ugly ,

My point is usually every year over the course of his 23 years as Head coach he will have a tough schedule, this would not count the district.

You really have a hard on for Prestonsburg don't you? 42 of your 59 post are about Prestonsburg, with 90% of it being negative. :haters:

Eagles 2011. You realize grade school and high school are two different leagues. Good luck to both teams

haha.... you start with a broad statement, but you pick out THIS year ?!? But I'll bite (mainly because I'm bored...lol).
Please keep in mind it's not really fair to judge this retrospectively.

Sheldon Clark - though they've fallen on hard times, they have had some pretty good teams and have some tradition they've built.

Powell Co. - this is a game among friends. Coach Burchett was an assistant under Coach Haywood at P-burg back when Coach Derossett played.

Betsy Layne - before 2012 I'd agree, but not now. They only lost 2 games and came within 9 pts of Somerset last year. They're 3-1 this year (with loss to Sheldon Clark - see above). In any case, this is a district game.

Hazard - equal. Only losses in '13 were to Pikeville and Williamsburg.

PCC, SV, Leslie Co. - all district games.

Lawrence Co. - far closer to equal than weak. It's a 3A school with a decent tradition in football.

I think he is talking about the blow up between coaches and parents after the middle school game due to BL staff posting something on social media, then the AMS players bringing it out of the locker room after the victory. None the less silliness shouldn't roll over into the high school level. Plus the kids from BL and Pburg are mostly friends.

There's a positive moving forward cleaning up my negativity. Confusednicker:

Another win for P-burg.

Wrong on the record... Pburg was placed on probation but was not forced to vacate any wins.
