Romans from Powell, hands down, I've seen him play, he is a rock, and much more buff this year.

I'm sorry but I do not think that height is the only thing that makes you a big man. You can be almost seven foot and a bean pole, but you can also be six foot and 250 pounds of muscle. So height isn't everything when it comes to being on the inside.

At 6'2 and close to 250 pounds you would have to consider Romans a "big man" in the 14th region, and as for Collins being 6'8, Romans would make him look like a kid on the floor. Oh yeah Romans benches well over 300 pounds, strength means more than size.

Romans is a big 'wide-body', no doubt about it. And he is a good center. But is he going to block shots and intimidate shooters around the basket the same as a 6'8 player. I say if you polled every coach in the region about which player they had rather have on their team as their center, Romans or Collins, the answer would overwhelmingly be Collins.

Roman. Who's Collins from JBS?

Benchwarmer Wrote:Roman. Who's Collins from JBS?You ask, "Who's Collins..."?
Why, he's the best 'true' big man in the 14th. Surprised you haven't heard.
His team was runner-up in the state AAU to Scott County this summer (although they did get killed by the Cards in the championship game, but Scott may just be the best team in the state this season, so that's no shame). But they DID make it to the finals, and that's no easy task.
Romans is ok, and a much stronger player than Collins, being 6'2 and 250 (however, we're not talking about football here). He's not a better center because he lacks the height and shot blocking ability of the 6'8 Collins.
Also, imo in a matchup between Powell County and June Buchanan this year, the Crusaders win with room to spare. Just wait and see.
Powell is probably not even the best team in the 56th. That would most likely be Lee County. And they might even be running a close race for 3rd place with Estill County. Just get out of the district first, then talk about JBS, Collins, and the rest of the region.

If im not mistaken Romans and Collins played in a all-star game together. Romans went for almost 20 and 10, and im not even sure if Collins scored. Just throwing that out there. As for coaches in the region wanting Collins over Romans you are badly mistaken. I know they are in different classes, but if I could have one of them for just one year it would definently be Romans. He has proven himself against region competition, while Collins is more of an unproven, up-and-coming player. And as for shot blocking abilities Romans uses his wide-body and strength to get good position and keep his opponents out of the paint(no need to block shots), and Romans is a much better defender away from the basket. IMO

Easy guys and girls. Both these boys are very skilled players in the middle. The only way to see how they would do is to let them battle it out in the paint. And as for Powell not winning the district. LOOKYANNER....you are poorly mistaken. Powell has just a good a chance of winning as Lee, Estill, or Owsley. So quit making predictions.

Powell has just as good of chance as anyone in the district to win it.
But Powell's fans have been on here making it sound like Powell's going to win the REGION!!!
Geeezzzz. Win the district first.
So you'uns need to quit making the predictions.

He is the 6'8" dude who has never been held back. He probably weighs a good 250 after strength training. Maybe more. He plays ..........Center. He got his leg broke last year, but played AAU this summer and is ready to go . He is a sophmore. They say he will grow more. Maybe 7ft.

IMOWell Collins must have been playing with a broke leg. That is a little hinderence for a man. He wears a 17 shoe and growing. He did miss playing last year but he has played AAU and open gym and seems very strong. 250+ lbs strong

Collins will grow more. 3 to 4 inches they say. Sounds like Romans being 6'2" is a lot shorter and stockier than most boys on our team.

Height doesnt matter as much in high school. Just because you are above average in height doesnt always make you a better big man. But on the other hand, if you are 6'2" does that make you a big man, or just a center? In college, 6'2" would be a guard. 6'8" could play center in college if you have the other abilities to go along with it. I have not seen Romans play. I have seen Collins play. Collins may be 6'8" but in my opinion, he doesnt play like it. He needs to get more physical and aggressive to be a dominate big man. Even though I have not seem Romans play, I think it would be safe to assume that he will have problems with true athletic big men. He wont be able to use his strength as much against the big ones as much as you think. They will just be able to shoot over him. Rebounds... doesnt matter how big or strong you are, the one who blocks out has a better chance if getting it. Blocking shots, you either have to have heights or amazing jumping skills and timing. As far as the head to head matchups goes. It also has alot to do with each players supporting casts. One player can outscore, out rebound the other, but that doesnt mean he had a better game.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

Collins broke his leg last year so he only played a few games. I don't know when you could have seen him . Maybe at the Pikeville game, where Pikeville got beat 40 points. He is only a sophmore, so he has 3 years to play. He will get more aggressive and stronger. He weighs 250 or better.

When you have a good perimeter defense it's hard to get the ball down low..and with the addition of Kris Adams i think the shot blocking shall begin!

Blocking is Collins specialty. With the help of Brent Hall, who is 6'3 and a very good rebounder who won't be intemidated . Hall is very aggresive. Conley who is 6'3 is a very good three point shooter. Trey Short is 6'5 and a very good three point shooter.

I watched him play over the summer with his AAU team. I wasnt putting him down at all, I like Garrison. I think he is a really good kid, but he needs to be more aggressive. Dont you agree with that?

He is still young and acts it. He will have 3 years to get more aggresive. Right now he blocks and changes a lot of shots. Makes a difference to have him in there. If you watched them at Pike Central, they were trying to get in some playing time before going to Orlando and it wasn't a pretty sight. They were split up and trying to play in different tournaments and when they did get together they were worn down. They did do better in Orlando.

Romans is a load for Powell. Height may play a small factor, but not too much
11-08-2006, 03:10 PM
Romans is the Big Man for powell, and as I'm sure you've all seen can do alot of damage down there in the paint. Powell is def. not complaining about his height because he makes up for it when he scores. JMO
