Let's not disrespect PHS by mucking up the name like that, MP10. Should I just go ahead and call y'all Hayseed High? Harlan had some fine young players last year, and I'm sure they've improved. But until y'all actually beat PHS, show a little respect, MP10. Informal count of the answers here show a 9-3 lead for PHS, and my vote makes it 10-3. :1:

For the people that say Harlan did well against Bell, I don't know what game you were watching. The game I watched, I saw the Dragons line get pushed around with ease, saw horrible tackling, some decent line protection, but Saragas was flushed out of the pocket many times, they couldn't run the ball at all, the only time they did was when both JVs were in, they scored on a screen, but the only reason was because a fantastic play by DeMarcus Williams. Unless the Dragons have huge turn around I see this game being just like last years playoff game. I want Harlan to win but I honestly don't believe they can. Also at PHSForever if I recall the Harlan team in 09 beat you all just saying

I'll take Pikeville at home. They dont loose there (Evarts in 1990)lol. Has anyone heard the extent of the injury to the Logan kid from Harlan. I sure hope he's ok. He's a great young man.

I'm talking about them making it an actual rivalry, no offense. They've got some good, raw young talent there that can do it (talking about Harlan beating PHS), but I just don't think they will this year.

Also at PHSForever if I recall the Harlan team in 09 beat you all just sayingHarlan's first drive was all on the ground except for a 25 yard pass interference call and we turned the ball over on downs at about the 10 yard line. We then got the ball back off a forced turnover at about the 30 and took it in from there on a middle screen pass. Just before the half ended we drove the ball from our own 30 down to Bell's 15 when the half expired. In the second half Bell's size and depth wore us down. 9 out of 11 of our starters play both ways. I'm not saying that we played great. We didn't.We still have alot to work on,but the potential is there and not so far away that we can't fix the problems. The biggest differences from last years team to this years team is athleticism, aggression and heart. These guys will give you all they got and if you do that you'll get better. Be assured, they will get better. As far as comparing the grid to last years playoff game,I believe there is a big difference in Bell and Pikeville and that's not meant to put Pikeville down. I think that if we have had 1 minute more in the first half we would have scored again and could have taken the lead before the half. That's completely different than the playoff game last year. Even without a score before the half. We gave up 28 points in the first quarter against Pikeville and then played them very close the rest of the game. Thats the difference in a vetran team and a team of sophomores.

Randy Maynard, Chase Hall and Caleb Campoy will be too much for the Green Dragons. I'll take Pikeville by atleast 2 TD's.

Harlan should win this game. If not something wrong in Dragon Land. They are much better than Pikeville.

Curious as to where the biggest threat to my Hazard Bulldogs will come from in the East...from in district with Harlan or out of district with Pikeville or Williamsburg or another team. From reading this thread, I have no idea. Sounds like it could be 30 points either way or decided in overtime by a field goal.

Lay off the cool aid Paul.... Lol...
In all seriousness... I agree that Harlan should win this one going away... Probably with ease... I was impressed with them at Bell High last week... They are the better team this season...

Again, I respect your opinion, but "probably with ease" is an incorrect assessment. They still have Randy Maynard, still have Chase Hall, still have Gage Morrison (this kid is gonna be a monster), Caleb Campoy, Zach Burgy-Vanhoose, etc. You all are seriously underestimating this team. Are they state champ material? I doubt it, very much. But they ARE still Pikeville, and even in down years, are very tough. We can blather here all we want to, but in the end, we will know Friday night.
08-17-2011, 12:01 PM
Having a hard time with these last two comments...really? REALLY? I'll go as far as to expect a good, competitive Week 0 game. Likely full of first game mistakes and craziness.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Dungy Wrote:Having a hard time with these last two comments...really? REALLY? I'll go as far as to expect a good, competitive Week 0 game. Likely full of first game mistakes and craziness.Agreed. I'm by no means predicting a PHS blowout, but...after last year's thumping, you would think the fans would be a little more tempered in their statements. DragonsDad made some good comments about how they got caught up in the atmosphere, PHS entrance, new black jerseys, etc. And that is all very true. But also, in the end, once Pikeville got out to a big lead, coaching staff went basic with much of their defense and offense to avoid showing too much for the next week opponent and to save legs (my opinion only). Now, Harlan DID continue to fight to the end, so I want to make sure no one thinks I am disrespecting them.

Okay... Probably a little too extreme... I understand Pikeville is an outstanding football program, with good players and an outstanding Coach... Both teams will be well prepared and play hard... No disrespect intended to anyone on either side...
I just believe that Harlan is the better team by a couple of scores THIS season...
Best of luck to both teams Friday...

According to the KHSAA realignment data, the 2 year average for boys enrolled at Harlan is 117.5 for grades 9-12 do I would say that 250 is almost exact.

Two of the top three single A mountain teams go to war in Pikeville. I will take Harlan in a mild upset 28-21. I believe Coach Donahue will have a few tricks in his bag for this game.

I agree on the top 3 teams. I think top 5 1A mountain teams are:
Hazard
Pikeville
Harlan
Williamsburg
Allen Central

Coach Donahue ALWAYS has a trick up his sleeve. I remember a shuffle pass and a line drive kick off the Center Lineman on a kick return for two wins at Cumberland, and a nasty halfback pass at Somerset...He can pull some stuff out of his duke with the best of them....What's next?

IMO this game could go either way. Its week 0 so there will indeed be some sloppy play on both sides. Pikeville has question marks and some holes to fill but also quite a bit returning as does Harlan. Of course everyone should know which way my Maroon and White heart is leaning but my head says it really is a toss up at this point. Either Way: GO PANTHERS!!!

The comment was to be taken as a compliment to the former Gov for all that he has been able to do for his home community, with the hospital and growth of UPike, and other programs and projects. So if that somehow offends some, I know for a fact that the Parents of our kids sure could use the contacts and money sources that Gov. Patton can bring to the table. So a new field house and a new sports turf playing surface with the initials HHS (Hayseed High School) would be just fine with us. BTW two seasons ago in the playoffs at Pikeville, Harlan beat the Panthers, for the 1st time in the series. Come Friday night look for the Green Dragons to make it 2 out of the last 3. Just Saying!

It was the first time Harlan has ever gone to Pikeville and won, I know this for certain cause I played for that Harlan team. Also the Seniors and Juniors were on that team so they remember how good it felt to finally get the monkey off our back.
Also at Dragonsdad I was at the field earlier this week and they had the stats up for the game, and harlan failed to get over a 100 yards rushing, for you to say they ran the ball well and for them not to eclipse the century mark tells me that this team is gonna have a hard time running.

Yes, they won here in 09. When was the last win before that, irregardless of field? What's the overall series record between the two schools? I am NOT saying Harlan isn't up and coming, nor am I saying they can't win, I'm saying I don't believe they will.
