Drop it down to five classes.

Keep the playoffs exactly like they are with 5 rounds. 1 seed plays the 4 seed from the opposite district in the same region.

Make 1A and 5A 40 teams a piece and 2A threw 4A 48 teams a piece. This would give you eight 5 teams district in 1A and 5A and then you would have eight 6 team districts in 2A threw 4A. Every district in 1A and 5A would have one team miss the playoffs. Every district in 2A threw 4A would have two teams miss the playoffs.

Play according to your numbers only. No playing up and no playing down.
If geography is not your friend, too bad, suck it up. You will be stuck in the district with teams closest to you going from west to east. If you are the furthest team east in a cluster teams and you are the 7th team you will be moved into the next district over even if its further away than what you have.

I could use some help though. Im missing three teams somewhere. Ive left class 1A short 3 teams and will adjust if anyone can figure out what the two teams are. Let me know if you figure it out and I will edit this post to fix the teams per class. When we find the two im leaving off, it may affect the first or last team in each class, but overall, this is what I came up with and I think it would be perfect.

So if I understand this correctly:
there will be twice as many teams in 2A, 3A or 4A who don't make the playoffs as in 1A or 5A?
Another way of putting it is in 1A and 5A four out of five teams go (80%) but in 2A thru 4A only 4 out of 6 (66%) get in. That seems a little uneven to me.
I have always believed the way to improve the playoffs is not to decrease the number of classes, it is to decrease the number of teams who make the playoffs. Only take the top 2 or maybe 3 teams in each district.
Would some decent teams miss the playoffs? Sure, but at least then the regular season would mean something
.

What exactly do you think is happening now?
As it stands right now, 1A and 6A get all teams in the playoffs while 2A threw 5A do not.

And yes in my proposal not as many teams make it in 2A 3A and 4A as they do in 1A and 5A BUT every district in this state would have somebody left out. No more 4 team districts.

Also it is completely fine to keep 1A and 5A at 40 teams because it takes the smallest of the small and biggest if the big out of the questions while you pretty much have 3 classes in the state. You have to think about what is realistic in this state. Changing the current format we have will probably never happen. And I mean never meaning 99 percent chance it doesn't change from 6 classes ever again and the playoffs never change again. The schools vote on this, not the khsaa. If you don't like the way your school votes to keep the playoffs the same then people like you should talk to them about it. The way each school voted is public record and easy to find. I can tell you one thing. The playoffs and amount of teams that get in will never change. So you need to condense it like i did to make it somewhat interesting. Four classes was a joke and should never happen again but we should have never went to 6.
