The 2008 Beechwood Tigers with 41 points - This Tiger team was a load to handle for anyone. They squeaked by a scrappy, hard hitting Hazard team in the finals by a score of 14-7. Despite the close score in the title game, they still had an average margin of victory in the playoffs of 30.75. The lone loss on the year was a 31-20 at the hands of 2As State runnerup NCC. During the season, the Tigers manhandled an 11-2 2A Prestonsburg team 43-14, always powerful Cov Catholic 35-21 and pitched 5 shutouts on the season, allowing less than 10 points in 10 of it's 15 games on the season. They only allowed 124 points on the season to rank as one of the better defensive teams of all the other 16 contenders... An outstanding team and very deservant of this lofty ranking..
And the 3rd best 1a Champion of the modern era is
The 03 Danville Admirals with 37 points - This Admiral team was trully special, ending the season with a stellar 14-1 record, barely breaking a sweat in the Championship, a 42-7 manhandling of an outstanding Beechwood team. This was a very complete team, both offensively and defensively, scoring 674 points and only allowing 158. During the regular season, they opened up by defeating 4a Dupont Manual 22-7, the same Manual team that upset Trinity a few weeks later and also played Male and St X closer than they did the Ads. They also defeated perennial power Highlands 26-25 on the road with there only setback a 45-26 loss to crosstown juggernaut Boyle Co, who just happened to be on one of the alltime great runs in KHSAA football history. The also defeated a very strong Mayfield team 25-3 in the semis... Trully one of the great champions and very deservant of this #3 ranking...
