Bob Dole is a great American but he is a bitter old man with a flawed memory. He cost George H.W. Bush a second term and later ran one of the worst presidential campaigns in history. He was a compromiser who cut deals in smoke filled rooms but never understood real leadership.

Reagan would have been right at home speaking at a Tea Party rally. His core positions did not change from the early 60s until he finished his second term. He was not perfect but he was far and a way the best president of my lifetime. The nominations of Bob Dole and John McCain in successive presidential campaigns were sad chapters in GOP history.

If Dole wants to help the Republicans, then he needs to understand that had his shot and blew it. He is not, nor was he ever in the same class as Ronald Reagan in terms of leadership or accomplishments.

Bob Dole shares a kindred spirit with John McCain IMO. Both are naïve, though generally moral minded men, who have a tendency to be over trusting of their contemporaries. Dole's big deal was to dissolve the IRS. If one cannot get elected on those terms he truly is a bad candidate.
