Coach Salmons Out at Lawrence County!!!!
inspiron Wrote:You are comapring apples to oranges when you try bashing teams of the 90's. I remember some very good raceland's, russell's, ashland's, tolsia's. In the early 90's they played in 2A and one year in 1A which would be 4A-3A now and in the late 90's they played in 3A which is 5A now(I guess; it's hard to justify with what was then only 4 classes). The one thing that seperates those teams from the present is that they "beat the best in the playoffs" when it mattered and their soft non-district schedule was overlooked because they could compete with the best the state had to offer; year in and year out!!! They went into the Bell Counties and blew them out by 40, then beat the rockcastle's, breathitt's, newport's, whitley counties, prestonsburg's, and then lost to almost an eventual state champion almost everytime. The team's of the present couldn't even touch the great teams of the 90's because against quality opponents they have failed to even score a touchdown. I know in my post their is alot of mistakes but you get my point!!

From 1995-1999 just a little stats:

1995
1st Round- Lawrence County 9-2 lost to Highlands 12-3(State Runner Up)

1996
1st Round-LC 8-2 Defeated Ryle 7-3
2nd round LC 9-3 Lost to Highlands 15-0(State Champions)

1997
1st round-LC 10-0 Defeated Whitesburg 4-6
2nd Round-LC 11-0 Defeated Newport 6-5
3rd Round- LC 12-0 Defeated Breathitt 12-0
4th Round- LC 13-1 lost to Bourbon 12-3 (State Champions)

1998
1st Round-LC 10-0 Defeated Whitesburg 4-6
2nd Round- LC 11-0 Defeated Prestonsburg 9-2
3rd Round-LC 11-1 lost to Breathitt County 10-3 (Lost in Semi's)

1999
1st round-LC 9-1 Defeated Whitley County 8-2
2nd Round-LC 10-1 Defeated Bell County 9-2
3rd Round-LC 11-1 Defeated Rockcastle County 10-2
4th Round-LC 12-1 Lost to Highlands 14-1 (State Champions)

They were State runner-ups in 1992 and had about the same playoff and regular season wins but the stats weren't available when I tried to get them.

Good research, inspiron, but I want to point out two things: 1)I was not "bashing" LC's 90s teams at all. They remain my favorite teams to have ever witnessed personally. 2) Your research does not cover non-district opponents, which was the point of my whole post.
If you want to judge solely by playoff competition, then the teams of the last two seasons rank right up there - having eventually lost to a state semi-finalist that was easily the second best team in all of Class 4A and the only teams that surpass the 2009 squad, by that measurement, are the teams LC had that reached the semis.
But the fact remains, LC has never made a big effort to play a rigorous non-district schedule except for during this decade, when they played very good Wayne, Ironton, Prestonsburg and Belfry teams, not to mention a PRP-caliber team here or there.
In the 90s it was mostly Morgan, Raceland, Tolsia and other area teams that would still play them, none of which you'd find in state title games on a regular basis.
We didn't start playing Ashland and Belfry on a regular basis until 99 and with Ashland it was only because they were then in our district. And the Belfry of recent years is WAY better than the Belfry we were playing in 99.
Again, I am not trying to dishonor teams from any era, but I do think it is unfair for people to take shots at the teams from the past two seasons and not admit that we weren't exactly playing Trinity and St. X back in the day, either.
Have a great weekend, all, and I pray we get the coach who loves our kids, our community and wants to work hard to sustain the momentum that's been regained.
