Best Coach in the Mountains?
#31
When i refer to paperwork and paying tuition, i am talking about the West Virginia kids...BTW David Jones got attention at Belfry by playing in two state championship games and if I am not mistaken he will be a starting cornerback this week...GO BIG BLUE!!!!
#32
Hillard Howard got Letcher Co Central in the right direction. He has got to be up there in the top 3.
#33
Top coach in the mountains for sure is Dudley Hilton. Just ask Bourbon County what he did for them in his first year there. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!
#34
Joe Beder
#35
Haywood

mark dixon is a good coach, but he is not in the top 10 yet. he have no state titles. but give him time he can be one of them. he keep playing teams like he does an winning and get some state title.....

I Rule The World Wrote:I will never say Haywood. They not only play with Belfry's best, they play with Matewans best, and other surrounding communities in WV. David Jones stayed in WV when they won state with him and Howard.

Hilton has to compete with Middlesboro and Pineville for players. And is tough year in and year out. Imagine if Hilton had all those good Middlesboro teams year in and year out.
...And Bell has never received any students who have came from Tennessee or Virginia? Smile Smile

Hilton has to compete with Middlesboro and Pineville....

Belfry has to "compete" for players with 3 Time State Champion Pikeville (Middlebsoro has one title) as well as 3A Pike Central, 3A East Ridge, 2A Shelby Valley, and 1A Phelps. I'd take Pikeville's tradition over M-boro any day of the week.

mandan Wrote:Depends on the criteria. I've said this before in other posts: It's hard to ignore State Championships. Holcomb has 3, Haywood has 2, McGlone 2, and Howard and Hilton have several. I'm not sure of the number. A school couldn't go wrong with any of these guys.

Howard had three at Pikeville.... excellent coach for motivating kids! I put Haywood and Howard at the top of my list!

Hillard Howard and Phillip Haywood
#40
Haywood. He typically wins the big games and get the most out of his kids.
#41
Howard or possibly Copley at Pikeville
#42
The Ville Wrote:Howard or possibly Copley at Pikeville

No offense because Copley definately has a bright future ahead of him, but as of right now he is 0-2 as a head coach Definately hard to imagine putting him in the same breath as Haywood, Hilton, Holcomb, etc right now

Once the talent at Pikeville equals Copley's knowledge and abilities, then the wins will add up and Copley's name can be mentioned with these other great coaches.

Haywood and Howard.
#45
Bell County Coach Dudley Hilton is a awsome coach. Big Grin
#46
What Hillard Howard does for his kids is awesome. He purchased a mini van this off season so he could pick up kids and bring them to practise. He is alot more than a coach to these kids. That is why they play so hard for him. There is no doubt in my mind Howard is the best coach in the state.

Thankfully haywood is retiring after this year!

Who would you think his replacement would be? I am afraid I might know the answer, but hope I am Wrong.

Hey brown I know what you are thinking...Matney....Sure he would be at the top of of the list for some people at Belfry, but he is a long shot because there are such pro Jim/anti Jim factions at Belfry...I have known Matney since I was a little boy, and to be honest I don't know if he would take it...I asked him that very question at the State in 2004, and he was real careful about what he said...He really said neither yes or no. A couple of names if Belfry stayed in house...Todd Cassell or Matt Varney...Those are just hunches.

I hear you, and you read my mind. But if he did who could blame him. He did go to school there and if I would have any place that I would want be at. It would be where I graduated. Let me say this, I hope that he remains here At JCHS, For he is loved here by the fans and kids. He is truly a great coach.

There's a reason why so many students would rather pay tutition to attend Belfry, even tho it is out of their district. Belfry has a tremendous program and a tradition of winning. Haywood is a leader and encourages and teaches players to win on the field AND off. It is funny how so many people can be so critical. I hear and read comments like these and can't help but to think of the old expression "you're green with envy". Don't hate because we're winners. :puking:

bucslover68 Wrote:Funny how the haters come out of the woodworks. No one has ever turned the game around and looked at the really good players that have left the Belfry program and gone to other Pike County schools or West Virginia schools because the playing time was not there at Belfry. I dare say there is not many schools that don't have players that could or should be at other programs. Kids love to play at Belfry. The area of West Virginia near Belfry has little to offer to the kids athletically or academically. It is not against any rules to go to another school as long as the proper paperwork and tuition is payed. Believe me Belfry knows this better than anyone cause they had a district title taken away years ago for the reason of improperly allowing students to attend. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." If Dudley Hilton wants his chance at the Pirates, the offer has been extended many times. He very well may win, but there is a chance he may not. There is not really a chance he can lose home and home with Sheldon Clark....Hmmmm.

Good post that is hitting the nail on the head. we should ask who is the best coach that wins with what they have. why would people move to small towns that have nothing there .Confusedhh:
#54
i have to go with Sheldon clarks coach hager...him and his team has talent
#55
howard is one of the best coaches that i know of.
#56
copely has won 1 game as a head coach over betsy layne. get real
#57
Dudley Hilton - Bell County yr in and yr out
Tom Larkey- Harlan County
#58
I'd prolly go with Haywood.

Bert Browne is a GOD! He is the best coach in Eastern Kentucky. He takes aveage Joes and turns them into excellent high school players. He dont have to recruit like the Pike County Teams

Must be "Averagisys", the Greek God of Mediocrity then... how many playoff games has the almighty one been victorious in?

Can we all agree that at least winning a playoff game is a requirement to be involved in this discussion? I mean we now even have completely irrelevant nominations for coaches like Bert Browne!
