Are right guys, we all think that our own school has the best coach. Let's see who you think the best coach is, other than the teams you are rooting for. Go ahead and state your school coach and then tell us who, other than him, is the best coach, IYO.

Howard, Haywood

Haywood, Holcomb, and Hilton. Top 3 IMO.

I gotta throw Coach Larkey in the ring. We haven't won a game yet (here)and he has won the respect and admiration of many of the locals for what he has done for Harlan County football thus far.

You can't leave out Jim Matney.

No, you can not leave him out. He is by far one of the best in this area. However, I feel he needs to give some of the other players a chance at proving themselves. When JC gets ahead, if he is unsure of the ability of a good player give that player a chance then to try to prove his ability. I see players that have been there every practice and given 110% each time standing on the sidelines when all they want is a chance. I am not saying a new player, this is regarding players that has payed their dues. Waiting for the older players to graduate.

He does give them a chance to prove themselves and it's during the week during PRACTICE. I can promise you that if a player is busting there hump Monday through Thursday in practice they will play on Friday. If you want to carry on this conversation please pm me the names of the players that you feel are giving 110% and not given the chance. I would love to carry this conversation on. Bottom line if the kid is giving all he's got in practice he will get to play on Jim Matney's team.

Howard, Hilton,Larkey.. I would say that the top spot goes to Hilton respectively!

Wouldn't want to give names? I would like to see this player get his chance but don't want to see him get messed with in practice.

Well you need to tell "this player" to give it all he's got in practice and he will play.

Haywood is the best coach in the MNTS and thats the bottom line

Check out the khsaa web site to check on the wins then ask your self this ? again. HILTON is the bottom line. Year in and year out he has always got a team you don't want on your high school schedule..

Phillip Haywood

I think if you look at accomplishments then the top three have to be Hillard Howard, Phillip Haywood, and Dudley Hilton in no particular order. However, if I had to pick a young coach to start a program with, I would probably go with Shawn Hager of Sheldon Clark. I am in no way affiliated with the Sheldon Clark program, but I feel for a young coach, he has done a fantastic job. I know him personally, and I can tell you he is an outstanding person.

I like what i seen out of Scott Parkey in his first game. I know its gonna take him a while to build his credentials but that was a good win. They really put it on a highly rated Pulaski team. That was a hard hitting game on both sides of the ball.

Let's just say that the mountains are blessed with many great coaches, and IMO it would be impossible to name the best.

I agree with Old School, the mountains are full of very good coaches and it would be impossible to name the top one. You have Howard with all the history and trying to build a tradition at LCC, to Larkey taking on the same task as Harlan Co. to Coach Hilton, to the current guru at Belfry Mr. Haywood, to coach Holcomb in Breathitt Co. to Mr. Matney over at Johnson Central, and I agree that Coach Hager is going to be great and the many more young coaches busting their butts daily trying to make a name for themselves and their respective schools should be respected. I think we all need to realize what the rest of the state sometimes forgets, mountain football has just as many good coaches and players as those schools in Central, Northern and Western Kentucky. We should be proud every Friday night when one of these coaches get's a win and realize it's for mountain pride not only school pride.

Howard. As much as I hate Pikeville.
Haywood, and Hilton, are the top 3.

Im gonna have to say Haywood and Holcombe. These two guys have Breathitt County and Belfry contending every year for a state championship. They never rebuild their respective teams, but simply reload!
09-04-2008, 02:28 AM
Haywood & Howard above all posters.
09-04-2008, 03:16 AM
Phillip Haywood by far and he has earned every win he has under his belt.
09-04-2008, 11:38 AM
Mark Dixon at Hazard.
09-04-2008, 12:29 PM
I will never say Haywood. They not only play with Belfry's best, they play with Matewans best, and other surrounding communities in WV. David Jones stayed in WV when they won state with him and Howard.
Hilton has to compete with Middlesboro and Pineville for players. And is tough year in and year out. Imagine if Hilton had all those good Middlesboro teams year in and year out.

Depends on the criteria. I've said this before in other posts: It's hard to ignore State Championships. Holcomb has 3, Haywood has 2, McGlone 2, and Howard and Hilton have several. I'm not sure of the number. A school couldn't go wrong with any of these guys.

Seems to me like noone holds a candle to Haywood and Holcombe. These two coaches have obviously created programs that are top notch. Go Engineers!

Since I am a Letcher Central fan of course I am partial to Hillard Howard. But since the thread says you cannot list your own coach, my vote goes to Belfry with Phillip Haywood. To consistently do what he does is a wonderful accomplishment and a big milestone achieved for mountain coaches.

Funny how the haters come out of the woodworks. No one has ever turned the game around and looked at the really good players that have left the Belfry program and gone to other Pike County schools or West Virginia schools because the playing time was not there at Belfry. I dare say there is not many schools that don't have players that could or should be at other programs. Kids love to play at Belfry. The area of West Virginia near Belfry has little to offer to the kids athletically or academically. It is not against any rules to go to another school as long as the proper paperwork and tuition is payed. Believe me Belfry knows this better than anyone cause they had a district title taken away years ago for the reason of improperly allowing students to attend. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." If Dudley Hilton wants his chance at the Pirates, the offer has been extended many times. He very well may win, but there is a chance he may not. There is not really a chance he can lose home and home with Sheldon Clark....Hmmmm.
