At least Pikeville ranks in the top 10 schools for the state year in and year out. And yes, I agree with you on the 12 from JBS getting scholarships. That is how they get all those athletes to attend school there. Everyone who goes to JBS gets free college if they go to ALC. If you catch a parent over there that their boy goes to a different school, and they get told that if they attend JBS for free, then get free college, they will send jr to school there. But they are not a academic school first and athletics second. If they really was that, then they wouldnt allow ball players to be held back. You can say that middle school and high school is different, but they both have the same headmaster. So they are the same school. They do not list JBS as a 9-12 school do they?

It is amazing to me that the "haters" have to resort to academics when they dont have basketball left to complain about...How about this stat>>>>The school has been there for 23 years and only two people that have graduated from there have not gone on to college. Check your school and see if your college rate is 99.5%....... Some of these kids go to ALC because they choose to but most get scholarship offers from many other colleges.

You are not in reality of what goes on in basketball these days if you think that they are the only school that holds their players back. Their are schools in the 15th that I bet have a much higher rate of hold backs. You should do a survey of the teams around you and you would be amazed how many kids are held back. I was trying to explain to that person that you cant hold a kid back in high school not that it is right or I agree with it just that you cant do that like they thought.

I am not talking bad about them. I just said that JBS isnt strictly a academic school like it was started out being. They have some very good programs over there. If you graduate from JBS, you have a free ride at ALC if you want to go there. If you graduate JBS and ALC, ALC will pay for your graduate school. That is a deal that would be very hard to pass up. Just imagine graduating medical school or becoming a lawyer without having a student loan. All I am saying about it is that if it was a true academic school, then ball players wouldnt be allowed to be held back in their middle school like they are even though they have above average GPS'acompared to most schools. I just said it wasnt academics first and sports second.

And when people say that JBS doesnt recruit, I know for a fact they do because I seen and heard it all first hand. Believe it or not, even though they are a private school, that doesnt mean they can recruit like it has been said on here. It is easier to get by with it being a private school first, independent school second, and public school third. But all the same, it does happen.

That is one of their recruiting tools. Come to JBS and go to ALC for free. Parents should realizes that ALC is tution free anyway. At least thats what the advertise.

I've seen it first hand myself. the_answer said on another thread "4 out of 5 have attended JBS for almost their whole life. The others have been there since 4th or 5th grade. I am not sure that is considered breaking the rules." Well get your facts straight. Brent Hall started JBS his fr. year, came from Knott Co. schools. Slone kid came to JBS his 8th grade year, came from Knott Co. schools. Nason Roberts went to JBS i believe his 7th grade year, came from Knott Co. schools. And, another kid I believe his name is Amburgey, went to JBS his 7th or 8th grade year, came from Knott Co. schools.

Brent Hall tried to go to KCC and they forgot to tell him they wouldn't be there. 3 TIMES his dad had to go pick him up after hours of waiting. Then he came to JBS. The Slone boy was home schooled most of his life, he has tried other schools , but came back to JBS where his sister alsom attends. Nason Roberts chose to come to JBS. and you know the Amburgey boy , you know him well, and he chose to come to JBS, nobody recruited him. Most of their ball team have been there since pre school. How can you pick out 2 or 3 kids and make a big deal out of it?

I remember talking to Brent when he was in the 8th grade at Beaver (KNott Co school). He said JBS had been calling him. Wanting him to come over there to play balland he wouldn't have to worry about tution. All of this is beside the point. People are saying they have been here since 1st grade. That is not the truth. One lie after another. Now thats 4 kids not 2 or 3. The fact is you tried to get Bartrum (Beaver), both Mosley boys (hindman), Ratliff, Shepard (Emmalena) and others. KIds talk and they talk a lot.

Well don't jump all over me for asking a question. I just wondered if the 12 Seniors got free scholarships to ALC or to other colleges. I was just curious...has nothing to do with hating or academics.

That's the reason I was wondering...because ALC is advertised as "free".

If I'm not mistaken, the Slone boy attended HHS last year.

Wow 4 kids and not 3. What a lie that was! Just think if any of those kids had come to JBS, they would be going to the Sweet Sixteen.

Wrong. You dont get a "FREE" ride at Alice Lloyd after graduating JBS. You still have to pay some. AND Alice Lloyd doesnt pay for your grad school. They have the Caney Cottage at UK, most people think their going to graduate from Alice Lloyd with a Biology degree and go down to medical school at UK on a free ride. Yep, well most people are wrong. If there are 100 graduates maybe 1 will be selected for the Caney Cottage Scholarship at UK. Usally Valadictiorians. Smile

That's Legal. JBS is a private school, they can do that. Looks like JBS did a pretty good job recruiting. Smile Maybe Tubby Smith can learn something.

I bet alot of those boys wished they would have played ball at JBS this year...

I was just going on what I was told by the headmaster over at JBS 2 years ago. That was a first hand statement, not hearsay. I heard it from Gary himself in his office. So I guess Gary was either wrong or didnt say all the facts.

Or maybe it is different for basketball players than the average student....

 When my older children went to private schools in Jefferson Co it was for academics not ball. I really thought that's why you sent them to private schools , but maybe I am wrong.

Private schools are not allowed to recruit any more than pubic schools are. That is against all KHSAA rules. But as private as well as public, there are ways around the whole recruitment process. But to say they are allowed to because they are private isnt true at all. All schools in the KHSAA follow the same rules if they are public, private, or independent. There are not separate rules for each.

Usually, Valadictorians are selected for Caney Cottage because ALC is investing in that student completing their course of study with high marks, its a good return for the college showing UK that when ALC sends someone to the graduate program, it's not going to be a waste of UK's time. The Caney Cottage program cost ALC and is a huge part of their education success that cannot be taken lightly.
