Pikeville's QB situation....Honaker or Branham??
#31
honaker should most def get the starting job, but blake should turn out to be quite the qb, i remember watching his brother play so well, only to fall short, wasn't that the year they lost to lynn camp? or am i not remember correctly?

not exactly sure i just remember being there at the game, and watching as we thought we could pull off a miracle, and came up short, lynn camp was the year jess perish graduated i can't remember when that was and the only reason i remember him is because of his father who i knew very well

Didn't think that was right, so thought I'd do some checking on KHSAA.org.

Oldham Co. beat Louisville Ballard (twice), North Hardin (Andre Woodson was there then), and Lou. Manual (playoff game; Keenan Burton was there then).

Also, running "that offence" they beat Covington Catholic and Lexington Catholic (playoff game). (Lost to Highlands at Highlands in a close game in the final minutes.)

These weren't "wins," but thought this was pretty decent: lost to Lou. Male, Trinity, and St. X by fewer than 10 points (scored a BUNCH of points against Male).

You're right though, "that offence" hasn't not gotten a win against a "good team" since at Pikeville (unless you count Hazard a "good team" when they crushed them in the reg. season game). I vote they DON'T run it next year -- even though it helped them out-gain Henry Clay and Belfry, it didn't SCORE enough points.

And I agree with you, I wish he'd moved to Mayo at qb WAY before they did in 05 (actually it wasn't "mid-season" but rather game 10). Think the Somerset game would've been a battle to the end if Mayo had not gone out.

Don't know much about Branham but it would make the team better if he could play QB so you could have another weapon with Tim.

were any of these games in state semi finals or state championship?

because i didnt say he couldnt beat good teams
i said he couldnt win against a good team when it mattered most

Eagle Dad Wrote:were any of these games in state semi finals or state championship?

I respectfully disagree. I followed closely the situation when they were replacing Coach Mac. I remember that he was hired specifically because beating good teams at a school that wasn't known for ever having any football success, several of them in the playoffs (including teams that have won state titles).

I also think (and think others would agree) that beating LexCath at LexCath in a second round playoff game IS considered a "big win," even though it wasn't the semi-finals or finals. Especially considering Oldham Co. hadn't even won a playoff game at all for over 10 years before he got there (again, got that off of khsaa.org).

If the only "good coaches" are ones that have won a final or semi-final game, that really narrows your list down as to who could be their coach. Why then, didn't they ask Coach Howard to come back? He and Coach Haywood are about the only ones in that area still coaching that fit in that category.

Another interesting question since that comes up: how do you think Coach Howard would fare TODAY without being able to get all the best players in Pike Co. (and Texas, and Maine, and West Virginia)?

Also, do you think coaches that HAVE "won against a good team when it matters most -- state finals and state semi-finals" (your definition of "a good coach") were good coaches BEFORE they'd won that "big game" or did they only become that AFTER they'd won it?

If you were the owner of the Colts, would you have traded Peyton Manning prior to this year for Trent Dilfer? After all, Manning had never "won the big one" and Dilfer had won a Super Bowl AND a Conference Championship game.

I think you bring up some interesting points, but this thread is about next year's QB at Pikeville and you have turned it into bashing the head coach for an offensive attack that appeared to be a one-time thing after losing their QB in the first game of the season. I am very good friends with a couple of the assistants at Pikeville, and from what I'm hearing from them, I don't think they're planning on running "that offense" again; who the qb will be will come down to who can best do ALL the things a qb has to do to win a close game. They think that COULD be Honaker, but others will get a chance to show they could do it too -- and the point about Honaker being utilized somewhere else is a big factor, I believe.

not running that offense is a good step in the right direction
and i think that a far as what offense you run you have to look at what you have
a running back for a quarter back
a running back for a full-back
and a running back for a tail back
so the safest thing to do would be to run the ball down the other teams gut
and not dothe trickery that this offense has displayed in the past
but good luck running the ball with that weeak offensive line!

and if i didnt know any better i would think that you were coch jackson
cuz i dont know anyone who has that much free time to look up his past...

you probably even know his social-security number
if i knew him personaly i would have to tell him that he has a real close follower
wink-wink...

Seems as though you are just as full of knowledge DAD (wink-wink) Things are not always as they seem. There are reasons for the way things were done. Last season is over and time to move on.

Like I said, as a fan of the Pikeville program from afar, I was a very close follower and interested observer of the hiring process. I did some research as to ALL the candidates that were up for hire and read several articles about who was hired after it was announced -- which I thought had mentioned some key wins and accomplishments.

Pretty easy to find info on the khsaa website too -- took me about 5 minutes after reading your post saying there hadn't been any "big wins" and thought I'd remembered differently.

Anyway, you're free to think what you like...free country and all that. I'll continue to give the staff there the benefit of the doubt considering the unfortunate injuries of last year and their success moving the ball against some pretty good teams; BUT, if the head coach isn't successful in his third year, I'll be the FIRST one on here saying he should go elsewhere.

I know the coach's social security numberSmile. THIS is Coach J, Eagle Dad.

Would be glad to sit and discuss football with you if you are a truly concerned Pikeville football fan.

Seems to me, however that you might be someone with "an agenda" (categorizing our offensive line as "weak" and the mainly "negative" overtones in your posts). If not, I look forward to hearing from you and having you share your ideas as to how we could do things better. Maybe you could even come on board as a volunteer coach?

I appreciate some of the things that have been said on here as a defense of my previous record as a coach, but truth is, any "big wins" are in the past and don't matter squat to the good fans of Pikeville who (rightfully so) expect only the best. They (along with our players, parents, administration, etc.) can rest assured that we are doing nothing short of our best -- most of the time even 7 days a week even in the off-season -- to make sure what happened last year doesn't happen again.

Further -- I will hope to be announcing a "Talking Panther Football" get-together soon where folks from the community (fans, former players, etc.) can come to the school or Jerry's or somewhere and hear first-hand a little as to why we do what we do on offense, defense, special teams, in the off-season, etc.

And as to the QB discussion, message boards are fine for speculation, but just like at EVERY position at PHS, playing time, starting assignments, etc. will be determined by ONE thing -- who PROVES BEST on the PRACTICE FIELD and in the WEIGHT ROOM that we can TRUST them to do what is required in the games. Not by who did it last year...not by who's daddy has more money...not by who's parents complain the loudest. Tim H. got thrust into something that was almost totally new to him and did a GREAT job considering the circumstances and the pressure put on him. He MAY be best-suited for a different role -- and maybe one that would enhance his college options even -- but that decision hasn't been made yet.

If ANY true fan of Pikeville football wants to come and see what we're doing, our weight room and coaches office door is always open -- we're generally here from 2:00 to 6:30 just about every night (leave earlier on Wednesdays) in the weight room above the gym.

i agree that some of the things i said were negative and that i was off topic of this thread
i will not attend your meeting but appreciate the invite
and if all goes well you will prove me wrong...and i hope you do because i like to watch pikeville football win
and if you win then congradulations

Honaker will be Qb , pikeville will run the same weird offense as always, and the offense will choke towards the end of post season...

well if i was the coach of p-ville i would use branham cause he is better rounded for qb. nuttin aganist the honaker kid man he is good. but where he is left handed their offence jus cant workfor him.. jus to let them in on it, its extremly readable he is good now its jus i think the branham kid will be better as qb..oh then use them both in the backfield with harmon..it will do damage

More players from outside of Pikeville on the last two teams than any of Hillard Howard's teams. And it isn't even close. HH would have won the district with both of these teams too. At the very least.

Branham should be the QB. At least Pikeville will be a threat to pass then. If the staff insists on playing a RB at QB, it should be Harmon. Whatever though, please, I'm begging you, scrap that offense!

They only player's on the team that aren't actually from Pikeville are the Honaker twins, Daniel Harmon,Chaz Jackson and Ethan Johnson. That's just five guys, the late 80's team at Pikeville had more than this

I dont see what all the fuss is about IMO Honaker didnt do that bad last year considering he had never played QB before. Blake is going to be a good QB and has looked like hes improved during spring practice because of the extra work hes put in. But he still needs more time and he will be good when its all said and done. Is Blake good enought to start now? Maybe, but lets not throw him to the wolves just yet when we have a QB with a years worth of experience who didnt play that bad to begin with.

Who ever Earns it and who is best suited to do the job

honaker will stand strong or his senior year then branham will have to take the show. hes a freshman. will be sophomore. he can handle it. well he did against allen central at least.
