Pikeville 2025

(12-07-2024, 06:51 PM)Belichick Wrote: The schedule had nothing to do with the injuries. Zero. It’s football and they had some bad luck. A kid got hurt first day of practice in pads. Another had a hamstring issue all year. Another had a non contact knee injury. Two got hurt on kickoff teams late in the year and not against the gauntlet. All starters who are playmakers. Just bad luck. Anthony was hurt against JC and stayed hurt all year but that was Pike County Bowl and Pikeville usually plays someone tough that game. Two linemen were hurt including their best DE early in the game against Sayre. Those were most of the big ones. Pikeville played poorly this year. Not because of a schedule or a dip in talent but due to a lot of factors that have been regurgitated or suggested repeatedly. They had 2-3 more wins on the schedule. They will be good next year. I really think people are going to be surprised and I also think there may be transfers in that could help. Even with the roster they have, they are going to be a handful. I say that assuming the offense gets fixed.

At CAL may be the first game. Cabell Midland maybe for Pike County Bowl. I would guess Belfry away and Raceland at home are still on there and their district games against Hazard away and Paintsville at home. Haven’t heard for sure about JC or LCA.  Also not sure if they discussed a return game to GRC because they agreed to come play at Pikeville last minute this year. That’s still a difficult schedule. I look for them to try to get another winnable 2A, 3A, or 4A team on there. Personally, I’d like to see any of Prestonsburg, Somerset, Letcher Central, Breathitt, Ashland, Bell, Corbin, Sayre come to Pikeville. There was mention of a game at a neutral site halfway with Mayfield last year. That would be fun. I don’t think Pikeville cares about manipulating RPI. Maybe they should but I expect another challenging schedule.
Great post. Only thing I will add is assuming special teams gets fixed too.

Cabell Midland schedule is out and shows them playing at Pikeville. Assume that's the PCB?

Correct.

I look for a big season out of Anderson and Justice on defensive side for sure. I think justice steps into the roll at running back along with jacob brown and has a big impact. Also heard they might get a few transfers from belfry like varney brother but they will never leave Belfry. You’ll getting that 8th grade year team years ago that went to state championship if I’m not mistaken.

Be surprised if anyone leaves Belfry because they are loaded and should running clock everyone in 2A district and maybe region also. But Pikeville will be loaded too and hungry and a hungry Pikville is a nightmare for Class A and yes I mean Sayre and Raceland and everyone else too. Got great players at skill positions who have been biding their time waiting their turn who are going to turn a lot of heads. Defense will be championship caliber again. Just need to avoid injuries and fix play calling and special teams IMO.

Pikeville has coming up:
7th graders lost middle school semis this year when winning TD was called back with seconds left in the game
8th graders next year won 6th grade state championship in 23, winning the championship game 30-0.
Freshmen next year just demolished the entire state going 15 or 16-0 with a state championship.
Sophs and Jrs next year are loaded winning almost all JV games including Ironton last year and Johnson Central twice this year if I'm not mistaken.
Sr class next year is excellent as well.
Pikeville set up for another long run if they avoid the injury bug and stay hungry.

I heard #0 Mikey Hager will never be the same. Inside information tells me he his dad, Jamey Hager, wants him to quit over being scared of reinjury.

The future is looking very bright for the panthers. The skill positions are completely loaded with Hager slone reynolds and brown. I also think that coach sullivan will figure out something with the defense. I am confident that the 2025 season will be great

Look at what he’s coaching. Hoskins was a hell of QB and anywhere he goes I think he’s going to develop a good QB. Pikeville standards sure wasn’t good this year.

I agree with Harold. Hoskins might’ve been a good QB but it doesn’t seem it’s translating to his coaching. Pikeville has enough coaches that are all well respected.

Sure, Pikeville did not have the best season this year, but you have to consider the many injuries that happened throughout the season and the seniors that were lost during after the 2023 season. This was definitely a rebuild season for the panthers and I do not see this as a coaching problem, I see this as an injury problem and a step forward, if anything.

Disappointing and big news if true. I noticed he wasn’t playing basketball.  Passing game wasn’t quite the same after he went down along with some
others. Good player but Panthers are deepest at the skill positions so someone will need to step up.

There are a few trolls on this thread trying to create rumors that aren't true. Be cautious what you believe. As far as I know, all underclassmen from last year's team are planning on playing next year for Pikeville, including those that were injured this past season.

True. Looking ahead to the upcoming season which no doubt will be a great one with the talent returning. Not getting caught up in the fake news that's being conjured up by some trolls on this forum.

I think Hoskins would be an excellent play caller for a team with good skill players. Not saying Paintsville didn’t have some good athletes, but injuries really limited what we could do at times this year.

Funny you say that, because Pikeville approached Hoskins during the regular season about coming to Pikeville to be their OC. That’s a fact.

I can’t say yes or no. I’d imagine if Floyd Central offers him the head coaching job, he’d take it. Pretty sure that’s where his wife is from and the rumor mill says they’ve been building a house in that neck of the woods. If Floyd Central goes a different direction, I could see him as Pikeville’s OC.

Hopefully Pikeville will get someone who knows what they are doing . After Billy Johnson quit calling plays and left Pikeville a couple years ago their offense has gotten worse each year. Pikeville got by with the terrible play calling in 2023 , but it was definitely exposed this year .  With all the talent Pikeville had this past season there was no excuse for the way the season played out . People from the outside blamed players being selfish , not motivated , etc... simply not the case . Yes , the terrible schedule and injuries played a part , but they had so many other weapons they could of used and the coaching staff chose not to . Honestly its hard to believe the little league play calling and offensive strategy was not only allowed but also the staff chose to never adjust or change anything . All the chaos of getting the plays in , having to use timeouts because they couldn't decide what play to run ,  clock management , several penalties of 12-13 men on the field  (sometimes 10) , etc.. This was not the players fault , comes down to coaching . Someone needs to take a long evaluation of the situation now , and not wait till the season begins or it will be a repeat of this past season .

^^^i said this very thing in the preseason about Pikevilles play calling and or decision making in terms of them sinking their eggs into one basket the last several years and got laughed at. The season ended up playing out how I said it COULD. I didn’t predict it but definitely called this being a season that Raceland or Pikeville would fall. The Panthers were blessed with players like Anthony, Hensley, Pugh, Wright, Birchfield, etc that allowed them to pretty much call things however they wanted and the JIMMYS AND JOES made things happen. Not the Xs and Os. This year they had Anthony but while they had some really REALLY good atheletes at WR, they didn’t have a Hensley or a Lockhart (so), or even Estep type threat that good teams had to worry about on the outside, that was just as deadly to go to the house as a the RB. The QB play wasn’t as good as it had been in the past either. Duty was solid, showed signed of being really damn good against LCA. But it never really happened again. Pikeville has crazy talent and depth coming up maybe more than they have had in their run. That being said, they have to fix the play calling. Bc if they sink all their eggs in the Wright basket the same thing will happen to him that happened with 35. Idk why they wouldn’t bring Hensley, Stanley, or Branham from the MS To handle the offense. They had a crazy amount of talent to work with and they kept things balanced. Sure, Wright was the bell cow, but they made it so you couldn’t key on him. Idk, there’s just a lot of odd things I’ve seen coming at Pikeville for sometime now. Starting with the AD stepping down, to kids leaving other atheletic programs there. Not saying anything is “sketchy” going on there or anything like that. Maybe it’s just the ups and downs of a small school program. But this season definitely exposed some of Pikevilles issues.

If the offense runs how it should, I think Pikeville people are going to feel two ways next season. First, they are going to be pleasantly surprised. Second, they are going to be even more disappointed for how 2024 unfolded for multiple reasons, some preventable and some not.

Every year it’s Pikeville and racelands schedule that prepares them for playoffs? With the “terrible schedule” comment do u think they should ease up on scheduling somewhat and hopefully cut back on a few injuries that way? Sayre supposedly scheduled no one and rolled through 1A. Is this the best way to approach things?
#59
I think Pikeville saying the schedule had anything to do with why they didn’t win state is just an excuse. None of those games were against 1A teams. Belfry played a schedule in 2021 and started 0-5. Still won 3A. A couple of those games were blowouts. Seems like no one is saying that Sayre was just better this year. Sayre may not have played a great schedule regular season but they beat Raceland and Pikeville in the playoffs. It wasn’t like in 2019 when Paintsville had some help from Hazard. Sayre beat the 2 teams who had dominated 1A for 3 years. And if Sayre can get kids from other Lexington schools to come play there then this may not be their last state championship.

i was just saying terrible schedule, meaning there was never a game for them to ever get any momentum going , there was no break . im not against a tough schedule but in combination with that tough of a schedule and injuries and bad play calling and questionable coaching the boys could never climb out that hole to gain any momentum or confidence to make a run .
