Johnson Central 37 Pikeville 15

There may be 4 or 5 1A teams that could’ve beaten Pikeville tonight. I don’t know?? But I do know this, not one of those 4 or 5 teams would’ve beaten Johnson Central tonight.

Well I guess getting it again won’t matter either but it does and if this is how they play next week the score may be worse I know it’s early in the season but Pikeville has a lot of starters back from last year and I personally think they are playing way beneath their talent and with no heart but hopefully they get it turned around if they don’t Jet Pilot will definitely have a crash and I don’t want that to happen

I said earlier and it's true - Pikeville has no offensive identity whatsoever other that handing the ball to 35.

Or throw it 50 yds down field light pole high and hope 1 comes down with it

Pikeville is staring at 1-5 or 0-6. Seriously. Look at their schedule. Likely go into playoffs with a losing record. You didn’t misread that and that isn’t overreaction to their game tonight or last week but if you have watched them, they aren’t really good right now despite having a good bit of talent.

Nice try but Raceland is about the 8th most exciting game on the schedule to Pikeville fans.

That may very well be true, but if they play like they did tonight they may be leaving Worthington with a loss. I think they are better than Raceland, but they are not showing it currently.
Agreed. Didn't say Pikeville will win just pointing out it's not Pikeville's Super Bowl at all. Unless of course it's at Kroger.

Wow. Did NOT see this one coming. 4A should be put on notice. Pikeville looked like they did against Raceland last year at their place and at times, in the title game last year. Bear with me…kind of a long post. But I have a lot of respect for Pikeville and from the outside looking in…this is what I found.

I did some digging, watching, and reading. What I found is a common thread among the Pikeville teams during their run the last several years. Pikevilles defense is NEVER not good. Their LBs are always big, fast, strong, and incredibly smart. Their DL controls the LOS without having to stunt their backers, which is why their backers are always so successful. But offensively? 2015 was the last truly balanced Pikeville champion that I feel like no matter how many times the game was played. They had enough to win it all and beat whoever was infront of them. Pugh, Batalie, and Hensley were unreal. That to me is the best Pikeville team in their current run.

Since then, Pikeville has lived on one player that was simply the best guy on the field each night and honestly the best player in the class. And in 1A ball, yes, one guy can simply make that much of a difference. It was obvious with Anthony in the title game last year. Without “that guy”, the Panthers seem to be grasping at straws offensively. Which makes absolutely zero sense to me. Their roster is absolutely loaded with talent. I went back and watched the 2022 Pikeville beat down of Raceland in the title game. Birchfield was the key. No one else offensively was consistent.

So there’s a common denominator in all of these Pikeville teams, and that’s offensively, all their eggs seem to be in one basket. A lot of the time it’s been enough. But last year in the title game, if you take Anthony out of the equation, that game ends the way the regular season game ended. But it didn’t…and now I move onto my next statement.

Pikeville will be fine in 1A. You Pikeville people are conditioned to having the ability to pretty much go toe to toe with anyone regardless of class size. Raceland has had that ability in recent years as well…this year we will take some beatings as well. Do I think Pikeville is as much of a favorite now as they were 2 weeks ago? No I do not. Do I think everyone in Pikeville is overreacting to this loss? 1000%. Are they still the best team in 1A? I’d say so. But there are definitely some dents in the armor. But just with their roster I can’t call them holes just yet.

I said it in the preseason that Raceland and Pikevilles schedule would make a lot of people try to write them off early. Both could be looking at a 1-4/0-5 record going into district play. Then they will both win their district with running clocks. And the playoffs will look about the same as last year.

Pikevilles lack of control in the box is what surprised me the most last night. JC is an animal this year. I was more impressed with them than I was unimpressed with Pikeville.

35 is a great player and VERY important to Pikeville’s success but I don’t think he’s a better player than 1 for JC.

Pikeville will certainly need 35 to be healthy if they plan on making a deep run in the playoffs because he does make them go and they looked really vanilla without him.

as for JC looked like they were fired up and clicking tonight. Could be a bad night for the Pirates next week if this how JC executes next week.

Can’t say Anthony is the best player in the mountains. Good hard working kid. Very good player but not the best. JC came out and ran McCourt right at him. McCourt won the battle picking up 7 yard right over top of Anthony and that set the tone for the whole night. Anthony broke the one big run and had a couple good plays on defense but really wasn’t the impact player he was last year. He isn’t able to play both ways and be effective against good teams. Single a he can do that but not against the deeper team. McCourt is the best player in the mountains.

I like getting on here and talking crap just as much as the next guy. We have fun in here for the most part. Sometimes we get some turds on here that wanna cause trouble but they do t last long. Over the years I’ve watched SOME Pikeville fans outlook change. It seems that some start talking about the end of the year as soon as the season starts. I k ow a state championship is the goal but damn….some of y’all forget to enjoy the journey. You guys are two games in to the season and have lost to two dang good teams. Would you rather be 2-0 and have beaten your opponents 130-0 ?? Pikeville is playing a great schedule…..enjoy it. We all know where the season is gonna end for Pikeville. Enjoy watching the kids grow and get better. As far as this game ….i believe a lot of people underestimated JC and we have forgotten they aren’t to far removed from a state championship themselves. Why some people got on here and predicted a running clock victory for Pikeville is beyond me……but all fan bases has those types haha

When Brenden Anthony ran that td for the 1st score of the game, that was an exciting and familiar sight to see. After that it was like a knife was poked into a tire! Like a hissing sound for four miserable quarters. This is not the Pikeville team that we as Pikeville fans have enjoyed for years. Give JC credit. They earned it with heart, intensity, and put on a football clinic. Congratulations to them. They looked like the JC of old. As for the Panthers, there is a serious need for restoration. Imo, its gotta start by having the heart that's been the core of Panther football teams we've supported and enjoyed for years. As an observation, there was NO heart to be seen from them last night. It's been a long time since we've seen that out of them! Here's hoping that Brenden Anthony has a complete healing of whatever injury he's had and back out there doing what he's so great at, and here's hoping for a complete healing of the entire team as a whole and if not it's going to be a long, sad season.

I wasn’t there and I didn’t watch one second of the game. I know football players are creatures of habit. They way the practice to what time they eat and what time a football game starts. The first two weeks of the season have been anything but normal for Pikeville when it comes to day to day operations. These are young kids. When their schedule….and I mean routine….gets back to normal you will see a different. Don’t mistake the boys feeling a little off with lack of heart cause that’s just not the case. I’ve looked Pikeville players in the eyes every season for awhile now and they aren’t lacking heart

My point exactly. They've always played with heart...except for last night. It just wasn't there.

Pikeville fans being lectured to by Raceland fans always gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over haha

I'm going to stop short of saying they didn't play with heart but the intensity was certainly lacking. JC WAY more intense, they wanted it more and they took it in a big way.

Coaching is showing in this years Madison Central team, they are going to create some chaos.

Agreed 10000%, the concerning thing for Pikeville was more so how they played, and not the outcome.  Corbin game, both teams played like crap, first game of the year, ok move on.  Johnson Central dominated Pikeville, that's the polite way to put it.  That I think is a concerning point.

You are right here Jet, Pikeville about mid second quarter on, played like like they knew it wasn't their night, still played hard, but that intensity wasn't there.

Now that semi understandable for a 1A team playing 4A, 5A, 6A top teams on some level, but not a Pikeville team.  Not specifically from this group of Pikeville players, that to me is what is concerning.

^^^Same pman...glad it's early and hope mounting losses won't affect their mindset.

In order for pikeville to get back on the right track some more expericed players need to step up and take on a bigger leadership role. There is only so much 35 can handle. Its time for 1,3,6,53,54 to relize they have very limited time left suiting up in the maroon and white.
#53
Brenden Anthony going out wasnt the reason Johnson Central won the game, the game was already way of control for Pikeville before he went out..Anthony is a good player but definitely not the best in the mountains thats for sure, McCort is the best in the mountains..Actually, I dont think Anthony is even the best player on the Pikeville team period..In my opinion it would be Number 14 whoever he is, that guy is a hoss..

Guess maybe the birds aren't finished just yet, despite the trolls.

Great job. Eagles. This was the result of a great week of practice and coaching by the boys and the staff. Onwards and upwards.
