The following is a list of top returning Kentucky quarterbacks heading into the 2024 season.
Brady Atwell, Owensboro Catholic: The Class 2A Player of the Year had undeniably some of the most impressive numbers of any quarterback on the East Coast. The junior completed 301-of-434 passes for 4,743 yards and a ridiculous 68 touchdowns. On the ground, Atwell rushed for 695 yards and scored 17 times. Could Atwell break 70 touchdowns thrown this fall?
Deuce Bailey, Bowling Green: The Missouri State commitment was a tough stop for opposing defenses last season and that's because of his abilities as a dual-threat. Baily finished 2023 completing 171-of-260 passes for 2,507 yards and 34 touchdowns. On the ground, Bailey rushed for 135 yards and three scores, but the year before went for over 400 in 2022.
Luke Pennington, Sayre: If you looked at the last name and did a double take, that’s because the junior’s father played in the NFL. Son of former NFL’er Chad Pennington, the signal caller was literally perfect throwing the ball, with 2,334 yards, 47 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Turning over he ball is a literal rarity for Pennington, very similar to the ball protection displayed by his father in the college and pro ranks.
Blaze Berry, Eminence: The 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback had himself a strong 2023 campaign and returns as one of the best passers in the state. Last fall, Berry completed 203-of-315 passes for 3,567 yards and 40 touchdowns. Look for the quarterback to surpass over 40 passing scores once again this season.
Bryce Button, South Warren: Button wowed folks last fall with his production as a passer and protected the football weekly. The Eastern Michigan commitment ended the 2023 campaign completing 168-of-26 passes for 3,008 yards, 35 touchdowns and just five picks. Also rushed for 217 yards on the ground.
Clay Hayden, Beechwood: Another junior quarterback that had some massive statistcs from a year ago was Hayden. The 6-foot-, 175-pound signal caller was among the top quarterbacks when it came to yardage andtouchdowns thrown. Hayden finished 2023 with 3,490 yards passing and 46 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
Cameron O'Hara, Cooper: When you talk about one of the top quarterbacks in Kentucky, regardless of classification, O'Hara is right up there with the best of 'em. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound signal caller completed 240-of-367 passes for 3,361 yards and 47 touchdowns.
Mario Litmer, Highlands: The other sophomore quarterback in Kentucky that put up some eye popping numbers last season was Litmer. The Bluebirds' signal caller finished throwing for 1,112 yards, 19 touchdowns and just two interceptions this season. Impressive numbers as a sophomore signal caller.
Kade Elam, Corbin: Elam was one of the top junior passers last season, completing 93-of-216 passes for 1,399 yards and 13 touchdowns and just two interceptions while rushing for 155 and adding eight scores. The signal caller has an offer from Eastern Kentucky.
Miles Reding, Todd County Central: Reding was one of the top freshman passers last season, completing 93-of-216 passes for 1,176 yards and 16 touchdowns. The signal caller also rushed for 631 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Atwell kid is huge and has unbelievable stats but I went to several Beechwood games last year and I haven’t seen a kid throw a nicer ball than the Haden kid from Beechwood. Maybe we will get to see that matchup in the 2A playoffs.

Elam's numbers are waaaaaaay off. Thought Corbin fans would be all over this. OSH hasn't been on here this week, probably at the Republican National Convention.

Isaac Duty of Pikeville should be on this list. 34 TDs 3 INT last 2 years along with 11 rushing TDs.

Sorry but Duty don’t belong on this list. Pikeville is going to be great and I am sure he will have a great season but his stats from the last 2 seasons combined don’t match up to what these other QBs did in one season last year.

He had Blake Birchfield in 2022 and Brenden Anthony in 2023 along with other excellent RBs and receivers. He has quietly been an all world QB almost behind the scenes. Great career at PHS and he's not done yet...

Great QB and several studs in the receivers' corps, wouldn't be a bit surprised to see the ball in the air to keep Anthony & Co. fresh for the playoffs. Great option to have in the back pocket...

I am not new to football. I think the Duty kid is a great QB but if you are going by the numbers then the numbers just don’t stack up. Like I said you can add his last 2 seasons together and they don’t reach the same level as most of the others listed for last season alone. Is he a great QB who will probably have an amazing season and probably lead his team to a state championship? YES! But to put him in the category statistics wise with the others I just don’t see it. You need to stop looking through those maroon colored glasses.

So because a kid has a stud running back to help him out its a knock on him? He is putting those numbers up with Brendan Anthony beside him in the backfield, Duty is more than deserving of being in this conversation and I have anything but maroon colored glasses. Lol

Duty deserves to be on the list. He has played with Birchfield, Boykins, and Anthony in the backfield and the staff would be foolish not to give those kids the bulk of offensive touches especially with the dominant lines they’ve had during his time at QB. So his attempts, completions, and yards are lower due to the talent the staff had access to. Arm talent wise, he’s right there with the rest at QB (he’ll play D1 baseball as a pitcher at the next level). People who just look at stats are the same goofballs who say LeBron is better than Jordan.

Leaving Strader from Ashland off this list is absolutely criminal.

I said last year that the Boley kid from LCA who was supposed to be the all-world QB was at best the 3rd best QB in 2A last season. Hayden and Atwell are both much more impressive high school QBs.

One statistic outranks all others: who wins more, often against bigger competition? In that, Duty deserves to at least be in the conversation. Full stop.

I am sorry I started this. Let me say again I think Duty is a great QB and will probably be one of the best QBs in the state and will probably lead his team to another state championship this season. But based on the “statistics” that were presented on this thread his “statistics” over 2 seasons do not match up with the “statistics” that most of the other QBs had in one season last year. That is why I am saying that he doesn’t belong on this list. It’s not a list of QBs with most wins or QBs who will have better college careers it’s a list of top returning QBs based on their statistics from last season.

Duty is one of the better QBs in the state. He's isn't leaned upon quite like the others mentioned in that link, but he's big, has a good arm, and makes the right decisions for his team.
Atwell is the best QB in the state though. No questions.

I could have worded it better but I’ll take a winner at QB who elevated his team with leadership, poise, etc over a stats kid any day and twice on Sundays. Boley, Atwell, etc are all phenomenal HS QBs or examples of them but how many state championships there are is a big divider too. And having a QB who can keep Ds honest is a big big part of a winning team. Don’t want to knock any of the other kids and won’t. But I’ll just stick with having Duty. He’s a baller who deserves to be in the conversation. Period. If all he played were games against some of the other school schedules, his stats would be equal.(07-19-2024, 02:41 PM)PHSForever Wrote: One statistic outranks all others: who wins more, often against bigger competition? Wins are not a quarterback stat. Wins are a team stat. Always been that way and always will.

So I think we all agree he is a top returning QB for 2024. It's a no-brainer really. For one thing, QBs' record as a starter is absolutely a statistic that is looked at. Big factor for NFL when it's contract ($$$) time. Another statistic is QB rating. Not used in HS but excellent measure of how effective a QB is. Haven't crunched any numbers and not going to, but Duty's completion %, yards per attempt, TD passes to interception ratio etc. is right up there at the top. And the most important stat of all, he's led his team to 3 state championships in 3 years as starting QB.
No-brainer.

I agree but Duty didn’t start his freshman season. Isaac McNamee was a senior that year. And Duty split time with Boykins for the first 2 games of his sophomore season. Point remains he is one of best in the state.

Holy crap good thing for fact checkers on here! This will be his third year starting, 2-0 in championship games and 3 for 3 overall. Hopefully I can remember how to count to 3 and 4 by the time it's deep in the playoffs.
If I liked to troll the haters I would say Pikeville is winning championships faster than I can count them lol.
Thanks Belichick for setting the record straight.

I didn't see who wrote the article but the freshman qb at Trinity won 5 playoff games last year.
Second point on Pikeville kid. Stats are around 50% of the story on whether a kid is atop qb or not. McNamee CHOOSES not to throw as much as other coaches.
