Prestonsburg Open
(02-14-2024, 12:01 PM)Real Badman Wrote: Anyone who knows HS FB understands that letting go of a seasoned coach like John D will ruin the program to come.

Same thing happened with Hager and Sheldon Clark, Holcomb and Breathitt, and I'd suspect Pulaski and Hines. PBurg was once a respected and proud program. Shoot maybe the best shot is to beg Donny Daniels to take it over.
I agree wholeheartedly. Losing John hurt, but sometimes it's best for everyone. It hasn't worked out the way most would have liked, but hopefully we can make a hire who will bring the pride back to Prestonsburg football.

As much as I think of Coach D. the program started to decline, during the last three years of his tenure. I believe he was 18-16 during this time, and one of the best classes to come through Prestonsburg left and went to Paintsville. The program is still to this day feeling the effects of the exodus which handed Paintsville a state championship. Not saying it's John's fault, but he was at the helm when this took place. He is arguably the best coach to ever coach at Prestonsburg, but it's foolish to say Prestonsburg's decline began the day he left town.
Its sad to see the Derossett is still being blamed 7 years later...with all the keyboard coaches and moms and pops out there, heck there should be a staff that can be put together to fix things...dont you think?

Heres a few numbers I put together for everyone to show that the regular season doesnt matter as you say Derossett went 18-16 his last 3 at pburg...he actually went 17-13 in regular season numbers but check out the breakdown below...

Derossett at Pburg

Overall Regular Season Record     Class 2A Record      District Record     Playoff Record
2015              5-5                                             3-3                       3-2                   0-1
2016              6-4                                             4-2                       4-1                   0-1
2017              6-4                                             5-1                       4-0*                 1-1   *District Champions
Total            17-13                                          12-6                      11-3                  1-3

Brewer

2021              4-6                                             1-4                       1-4                   N/A
2022              8-2                                             3-2                       1-1                   0-1
2023              5-5                                             4-5                       1-2                   0-1
Total            17-13                                           8-11                      3-7                   0-2

Haywood Last 3 years at Belfry
2021              4-6                                             9-0                       6-0                   5-0*   *State Champs
2022              5-5                                             4-1                       1-1                   1-1
2023              7-3                                             5-1                       4-0*                 1-1     *District Champs
Total             16-14                                         18-2                      11-1                  7-2

Now, some may look at these numbers and have a bunch of excuses and this and that and all this BS...But when I look at these numbers I see the regular season don't mean squat, its the district games and how you finish that matters...
The issues is mummy's and daddies love to see those 10-0 records and the records are all that matters to you all...that's it...as long as you have a 10-0 season you all are happy...now, The last 3 years of Derossett and Brewers campaigns are better than Belfry's last 3 years regular season records...oh my...you mean Belfry went 4-6 in the regular season, lost the first straight 5 games of the season and people started to write them off...and then what happened....they reeled off a state championship and poof, they are Gods again!!

The Regular season records don't mean squat...DeRossett left Prestonsburg with its LAST District championship in 7 years and counting...they were in a 3 team district in 2022 , won 8 games and still didn't win a district title...that was the year of the comeback from the mass exodus...right?  Nope, they dropped off again lets blame it on DeRossett one more time....Lets not take matters into our own hands and take responsibility, lets keep showing and teaching kids to keep blaming our mistakes on other people so we don't look bad....
I don't think I have ever been a keyboard coach! I respect Derossett and what he did for Prestonsburg, but I just call things as I see them. Believe me, there is plenty of blame to be passed around for the state of the program, but to say there wasn't any cracks in the foundation during the end of Derosett's tenure is being dishonest. John is a great guy and a great coach, but sometimes it's better for both parties to move on regardless of the outcome. Also, how does someone from Magoffin County know so much about the program and why would they be so concerned!

I can think of a few reasons, Blackcat...  Wink

There’s been some coaches contacted these last few days. Not heard a whole lot, but I know one coach was from Belfry and another from Ashland. Not sure if others were or where they’re from.

Michael Burchett is still an option also, but only way he coaches at Prestonsburg is if a NFL team doesn’t hire him.

The Ashland assistant is young, offensive minded and was told he specializes in QB/WRs.

That’s all I have right now.

Houston to the NFL wouldn't be uncommon ................. but what would be uncommon is if PBurg could match what Houston or a power 5 D1 school would pay for his services but could not afford Sullivan, Ray or Letton. If they have the funds that this thread suggests then stop waiting on people to apply and start making phone calls. I'd start with Saban, worst case scenario they could call down to Log Mountain or over to Pond Creek.

For reference Burchett made 250K to coach at Houston.

I love the passion here for blackcat football, but we need to be realistic, and if by some chance PBurg is able to afford Burchett, then they should be ashamed for letting Ray and Sullivan walk out of the interviews.

Just so we are all on the same page here, the total school commitment to head coach and assistants at Boyle, Corbin, Bowling Green and Highlands COMBINED is about 250K.  That is for the HC salary and ALL ASSISTANTS.  Now I know boosters are involved and there are many different avenues for coaches to be paid, but we have to start being realistic here.

It is illegal in the state of Kentucky for boosters to pay high school coaches. Are there ways around it? Yes. Are they all legal or on the up and up? No.

There is no ill-will intended by the post.  Let's just be logical and pretend that Burchett is a certified teacher, given that he's has no teaching experience he's going to start at probably around 37-42k per year.  I don't know the school's commitment to coaching salary but I would imagine its 10-15K and there is probably another 20-25K to pay assistants.  If he took the entire pool of money on the high end it would put him at 80K to teach and coach.  Simple math would say that he is losing 170K at the very least to come to PBurg and coach a struggling 2A football program.

There may be other factors we don't know about but to say that Burchett is an option if he doesn't get an NFL offer is passing along faulty information at best.

Assistant coach stipends are $1500 each and you get 3, HC is $7500. Teaching salary is about right.
Maybe Burchett is more interested in coming HOME and being around his FAMILY if he doesn’t land a job in the professional ranks. Maybe he doesn’t want to coach college any more. As for money. Money wouldn’t be an issue for him.

I had to go look for myself, because I couldn’t believe that to be true & sure enough, it is. That is an absolute joke and embarrassing.

These jobs as a whole are not as enticing as they once were, nor close and I’m talking about being a high school head football coach in general. Those with blinders on usually make them out to be much bigger and better in their heads than how they are viewed by the actual coaching network, but for an entire coaching stipend(s) pot of money for a program to $12,000? Thats an absolute joke.

Coaches in Floyd County are criminally underpaid
(02-15-2024, 05:45 PM)BlackcatAlum Wrote: Coaches in Floyd County are criminally underpaid
It’s 100% criminal.

If I’m a coach that has any interest in this job, or called upon to gauge interest, that has any kind of a track record of all in having successful years? I’m absolutely asking for the moon and maybe the stars, and I better get the moon, even a star or two before taking it.

With the recent coaches in both DeRossett who is a legend in the mountains from his accomplishments on the field to his larger than life, fun loving personality to Brewer, who did have success at Powell County and started to again at Prestonsburg the last three years? Then you factor in, as you most accurately called it, “criminal” pay onto what seems to be some definite unreasonable expectations at the current time for the program by some?

It sadly doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why they haven’t found their next person yet.

Mountain football and all of Kentucky high school football is better when the one and only “Blackcats” are in the mix of things (which, from someone not close to the program, it looked like those strides were being made these last three years?)

Well I mean it sounds good in theory, and I don't know him from a hole in the ground so maybe he has one of those trees my momma always told me didn't exist.  To think the only thing standing between him coming back HOME to be around his FAMILY and coaching at Prestonsburg is an NFL JOB OFFER, from an outsider looking in, sounds ludicrous.  Losing out on 180K + a year is quite a bit of money for anyone to miss out on.

I agree, but crazy things have happened before.  We shall see.

Extremely. Definitely taking the biggest blow through all of this

I seen on there was an applicant from Texas who people said was not Burchett. What ever happened with that and who is it?

Assumed it was. But folks said no. Has he been officially offered the position? Sounds like if he’s not the next coach Pburg is going to have to hire the guy that was OC on Brewer’s staff due to lack on interest in the job.

I don't see anyone applying for this job from Texas considering it wasn't posted on any state-wide or nation-wide site other than just the school Facebook. Maybe open the gates and post the job on Football Scoop, never know who you could draw some interest from!

I also heard it was not Burchett, and I do believe he would have to apply and interview before Pburg could offer him the position.
