Mayfield vs Owensboro Catholic (2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP) 12/1 - 4PM
#31
Atwell is the best qb in the state, in my humble opinion. I've seen him the most, followed by Boley and the Beechwood kid. 1) Atwell 2) Beechwood 3) still not Boley. Boley is maybe the 5th best qb in the state. You guys are seeing Atwells stats, but he hasn't played a full game all year, other than the Owensboro game. His stats would be crazy if he played all 4 quarters. He has tge size, the arm strength, the accuracy, the running ability, the leadership, he is truly a special talent. I hope both teams play to the best of their ability. Both teams are capable of winning. I pray for no injuries, and may the best team win.

It may just be because I am from the Owensboro area & know OC better than Mayfield (or LCA or Beechwood) but I have felt like they have been underestimated all season. They can absolutely win this game. Obviously, everyone knows Atwell is a darn good QB, but he's not all they have either. Carrico leads the state in rec yards & rec TDs. On the other side of the ball, the other Carrico leads the state in tackles. Their defense is always well coached & disciplined. As a McLean guy, I am far from a OC fan, but I absolutely have respect for their program. Now, that doesn't mean I don't respect Mayfield, my Cougs have plenty of bad memories down in there too!

I am taking OC for the win in this one, but a Mayfield win wouldn't surprise me either.

Owensboro Catholic plays with kids in their system. The two starting guards are kids they rercuited form the band (kid plays the drums in the OC band) and the tennis team (1st year playing football). Owensboro Catholic has no 5th year players. How many kids did LCA have on the team that did not come through their system. I know the Boley and Hensley didn't. How many 5th year players does Mayfield have? I've heard that Cartwright and Starks are both 5th year kids. How many other kids on Mayfields team are 5th year players? And didn't Biggers grow up in the Murray system?

Private School on Private School crime! Also, Private School vs. Public virtue signaling... I have now seen it all LOL.

This is the best and most complete OCath team I have ever personally followed and they have had some really good teams. Atwell is a stone cold killer and they have four receivers who fit their system perfectly.

If OCath is going to finally be the bride instead of the bridesmaid this is the core that will get it done for them. The bad news is... I think Mayfield may be a little too good this year. OCath plays hard but Mayfield is going to give them a lot of issues at the LOS on both sides of the ball and has enough athleticism in the secondary to take away some of the open looks OCath is accustomed to.

The good news is, this OCath team is going to be a force of nature next season.

This one could end up being the best game of the weekend:
Mayfield 33
OCath 28

In the 3 games I studied; Owensboro, North Hardin and Somerset, this is how OC played it.

Passing 61%. Running 39%

Passing:
Left side 37%, middle 24%, right 38%

Running:
Left side 11%, middle 69%, right side 20%

Sacked 3 times
Int=1
Fumbles lost=4
#36
Most of the running OC does to the right side is qb runs. Some of the runs up the middle are also qb. He is definitely their biggest running threat. The passing to the middle is mostly screens. The throws outside are the ones they try to hit big gainers on.

I knew 64 was a closet Cardinal.

I hope our players are not as confident as we are as fans. O Cath is legit and Atwell is a problem. I expect a win, but I am not quite as confident as some of my Cardinal brethren. If Mayfield hits the field thinking they’re already won, it will be a long ride home from Lexington. If it were at War Memorial, I would be more confident, but there will be no home field advantage in this one.

That said, I believe Mayfield will win because of their greatest weapon, and it isn’t a player. It’s Coach Joe Morris. That isn’t meant to be a slight at O Cath’s coach or any other coach in the state, but Joe has proven over and over that he is a Hall of Famer for a reason. He just knows how to win and get the most out of his players. I suspect he will be the difference again this week. I hope he never retires.

Unfortunately not. KHSAA doesn’t allow it. That way you have to pay them to watch it instead. I’m sure they will be in attendance, but they are not allowed to film and play it live.

They are some good dudes too and have been rabid Mayfield fans for a long time. “Big Dog” is as entertaining in everyday life as he is on his broadcasts. Never a dull moment around him?

Can anyone tell me why OC left #9 off the roster they turned into KHSAA for the championship? He definitely plays on offense and defense. Kinda smells funny.
#47
As good as Atwell and the OCHS offense are, I was really impressed with their defense. This has the makings of a really good game. The way that Mayfield has been able to turn over LCA and Beechwood in big spots has been the difference for them so far in the playoffs. Seeing those high powered passing games the past 2 weeks I think makes the difference in this one. Give me Mayfield 34-31 on a walk off 1 yard touchdown run by Starks.

I believe #9 had a jersey malfunction during the Somerset game and hade to change jerseys at halftime. Probably stayed with the replacement jersey for the championship game. Atwell is the real deal, would like to see Mayfield win it, but I think OC is just to balanced this year.

On an untimed down after a defensive penalty.  Smile

Thank you for info. But, we are gonna win. They aren’t any more balanced than PT or LCA. We are more balanced. Check the stats. It’s gonna be in the range of 42-21 Mayfield.

Man, I was feeling pretty good about Mayfield in this one.....then you went and predicted the same final score that you predicted against Somerset in 2019.   I hope my prediction of the 34-31 Mayfield win on a walkoff to reverse the 2019 score would work to give the Cardinals good mojo.  Now you might have counteracted it.

We aren’t relying on one player so much this time. Losing Neely really hurt us in that one, both offensively and defensively.

2,916... that's how many days have passed since the last time Mayfield won state. 2019 we had the game won and made a silly false start. Last year doinked an XP. I'm hoping we can steam roll the Aces, but if not then I'm hoping we can be on the opposite side of the fluke and finally get back in the win column. Kroger hasn't been our friend, it's like they've got a thing or two against red and black, specifically cardinals.
