Crum Leaving Cardinals?
#61
If its a academic move, then I can see that. Pikeville, Paintsville, and Johnson Central are the top 3 in EKY. JC's academic team is always one of the best. I hope for whatever decision this was for it works out for both parties involved.
#62
Actually cardsfan was wrong it was the 3rd grade since Jaryd had a math textbook. I'm pretty sure that the Crum's decision was not based on him solely getting to play basketball. Academics and also family I would say was a big factor! I think that it was an important decision that they did not enter into lightly. As far as Sheldon Clark fighting his eligibility, let them try, but once they establish a bone fide address according to KHSAA rules there is nothing more that can be done! They will , by the way have a bone fide address change real soon!! As far as people go I don't think you will find that many better people than the Crum family. Jaryd's parents have already had to make numerous sacrifices for his own well-being, I would also dare to say that every time they hear an insult or a threat from someone who was believed to have been a friend, they will be even more confident in the choices that they have made recently.I wish them nothing but the best in whatever they choose to do.
#63
The Crum family are fine people who made a very tough decision for their son's best interests, for that they shouldn't be harassed. I will continue to support SCHS Basketball and Spud, it may be a blessing in disguise and allow some younger guys to develop and shine in Spud's absence. IMO, SC wasn't gonna contend this year anyways so now they can develop guys to make a run in a couple of years.
#64
What grade will Crum be in this year? What was his stats for last year?
#65
Jaryd will be a Junior!!!

In the Know Wrote:If his parents are teachers and what was previously said about academics (no math book since 6th grade) is true, than this is a SMART move. They would know first hand since they are school employees. Anyone with a brain obviously wants the best for their child. If you examine test scores short of Pikeville, PHS followed by JCHS have the best HS scores in east KY. Both are great schools and would be a good choice. Of course I'm partial to one, but that's just me. Parents have a responsiblity to see that their child gets the best. Playing basketball is no reason to stay anywhere or go anywhere. His jump shot won't do him any good if he can't pass his freshman year of college. (before anyone jumps on this - I don't know the kid or his academic abilities. I was making a GENERAL statement.)

One thing I don't understand there was no problem with academics his 8th grade year his freshman year and sophomore year but academics is a problem now. WOW
#67
Jaryd: As a JCHS grad, welcome aboard. Let everyone that CLAIMED to be your friend get on with their life and you get on with yours. Do what you feel is right and follow the guidance of your parents. When basketball is over, your education will go on forever. I personally am looking forward to seeing you in black and gold, I will be there cheering for you. :letsparty

Very well said.

I think we all need to get past the betrayal you're feeling and congratulate Spud on making an attempt to better himself. Also, the statements about poor resources and preparation for your future are completely true about SC as a school. His parents made a tough decision but I think a right one in this case. Jaryd has aspirations that extend much farther than the small schools like Alice Lloyd, Pikeville College, and Morehead State (that students/athletes from this area seem to so often flock to). And I don't think its even about the athletics anyway. Top colleges and universities look at Sheldon Clark and see them as just what they are -- a joke. I've made the statement before, if you can not achieve a high school diploma at Sheldon Clark there is something HORRIBLY wrong. And that's not directed at all the teachers as a whole, because there are a few that try to make a difference, but with no avail. Regardless of a student passing or failing, they still somehow get their problems overlooked and slip through the cracks by being allowed to graduate without earning it. I believe Benton and Teresa were considering this when they, along with Jaryd, made the decision for a switch. Spud has dreams of attending Duke... not on a basketball scholarship, but on ACADEMICS.

We seem to be all forgetting that these kids are Student Athletes. Student comes first.

With that said, once again, I'm with the Crum family on their decision and wish them the best of luck!

Unfortunately, now is the time when students and parents start to realize the imporance of attending college. It's usually around the soph/jr year when everyone wakes up and takes notice. By that time, it's usually too late to make any major changes, but any attempt is a positive step.

As someone who's worked with college admissions there are 3 ways to get money for college:
1- be poor. There are several pell and other federal/state grants (KTG) that can get your college paid for plus get you a refund for living expenses. DOWNFALL - you have to attend a cheap college. No private ones. Downfall #2 - if your parents make any money at all, your grants are in jeopardy. AND if YOU work through school they can DEDUCT your income from your aid package. Now how are we to motivate people to work when the gov DEDUCTS the money they earned from college money? Bizzare!

2- be an athlete - if you are a good athlete and the coaches think you can stay eligible you're good to go.

3- be SMART - this is the most likely route for any one. Get good grades, study hard and be prepared. TAKE THE ACT starting in the 8th or 9th grade year!! If you don't do well take a study course!! An ACT of 18 will get you into college, but if you would like a full academic ride, you need a 27 or better at most schools. Especially private ones where scholarships are in high demand.

Hope this clears it up. Academics are where it is! I personally would like to invite all SCHS and LCHS (on state take over) students who can make the grade to transfer to one of our 2 GREAT schools! :1: (Not trying to make anyone mad here! Just putting it out there!)

congratulations on offending the corndog... just to let you, and everyone else know, sheldon clark has some fine educators. I went there for 4 years, and guess what, my ACT was a 30..my JUNIOR year. you can talk about how far behind they are all you want, but it is NOT the teachers fault. its the kids who REFUSE to apply themselves. all you have to do is WANT to succeed and you will...please, refrain from talkin about schools and educators which you yourself know nothing about....

Someone offends me on average of 5 times a day. :moon: It's called living in the world. I NEVER said SC couldn't produce good students or good ACT scores. Since you are so educated, I'm sure you could reread the post and figure that out. As for ACT scores, you don't want to have that discussion with me. Trust me. I simply said that his parents have likely found out that "HE" personally (talking about one kid here) was not being challenged, taught, etc like they felt he needed to. Obviously since they work in the system, they see problems, or else they wouldn't transfer him. If it was a simple fact of kids not applying themselves with great teachers, then I say they would leave him there. There are holes in your arguement.

Very well stated In The Know!!! I'm not so sure that people understand how important academics truly are. They can open many doors that otherwise would be closed forever.Jaryd will a have a tough time adjusting, but I think he will end up doing fine. Thanks for understanding the whole situation and not just focusing on the athletics. :howdy:

So this shouldn't really offend you:

1st - That is a lot of Bull Crap! You know as well as I do that Academics don't have a damn thing to do with it. If this was the case, seeing that his parents work in that system, and have know what was wrong for many years. Why didn't they move him many years ago? Why wait until his JR year, after all the better caliber players have left his program? Also, if that were the case. Why not move him earlier, when he is in grade school? Why wait until he is high school and have to uproot your entire home and move to another county.Rolleyes

I could care less were he goes. Spud is a great kid and a great ball player and he will be welcomed no matter where he is. I just can't stand getting on here and listening to everyone try and sugar coat it. Every single person on here knows exactly why he is transfering. If that is what his family wants to do. Then so be it. It is their son and their life. Don't get me wrong though. I am not putting down JC. They do have a fine academic program. I am just saying that if this is why he is transfering, why wait so long to do so.

2nd - Corndog23 Explain to me how you can get on here and put down someone for getting on to a coach or for that matter any one else. When you get on here and flat out call a 16 year old kid a "Liar" and a "Traitor". Then you have the nerve to tell someone they need to grow up. Please! Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black. Sounds to me like someone needs to practice what they preach. All this coming from a moderator! If you are going to get on to someone for something, just make sure you don't do the same thing they are doing.:dontthink

Sorry Corndog, I disagree. There is no excuse for the poorly educated people that come from our alma mater. People CAN do better if they want, but you had no further aspiration than UK (not that its not a good school, its a GREAT school) but if you were to want to go somewhere out of the state, not that you would, but lets say Wake Forest. They would NOT take you seriously with a 4.0 gpa diploma from Sheldon Clark High School. Thats my argument. And to come from SC myself, I KNOW it was an absolute breeze.

:dontthink I don't normally take up for people on here but, this one time I think I will. Ridge Runner I don't know who you are or where your from but, Corndog23 and myself know Jaryd Houston Crum very very well.We both have different opions on his transfer. We always banter back and forth with one another when ever possible. You are the one who does not know "crap from applebutter!!" His parents sole decision on transfering Jaryd did revolve around academics and where he wants to attend college. The basketball just made their decision a little easier.I don't think you should post on threads when you don't know anything about the situation!!! You yourself are just trying to stir the pot!!!

you are absolutely WRONG. i could have gone to wake forest, i could have gone to duke if i wanted, i could have gone to 99% of the colleges in the country. i CHOSE to go to UK because of my LOVE and LOYALTY to the state. 23 you know me, and you know what i am capable of, so this post really hurts...

If this is whats best for him then thats good, he needs to do whats best for him and not anyone else , you dont betray your friends by doing that

I just think he did what he wanted, for whatever reason. The thing about it is, this is America. He doesnt have to explain to anyone why he did what he did. He chose to transfer so he did. Case closed. Why all the arguements when the only people who knows why he transfered is himself and his parents. JCHS is getting a great player. I dont know him personally and only talked to him once so I dont know what kind of person he is personally. I do wish him the best at his new school. The fact is, he is gone, why keep bringing it up when no matter what is said he will still be where he wishes to be. My hat goes off to him and his parents if they belive in their heart that what they did is is the right thing.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

I know more than you think. Like I said, I could care less where he goes. BUT, If they were so worried about academics why wait so long? You can take up for who ever you want. BUT, what gives Corndog the right to jump onto people when he wants and then jump onto others for doing the same thing. Just because he is a moderator, doesn't give him the right. That is a double standard. You said you don't know me, but then you say I don't know crap from applebutter. So if you don't know me how do you know I don't know the difference? Crap is the line and reasons they give for the transfer. Applebutter is what they are trying to coat and cover it with.
BUT, that's my OPINION which I am entitled to. And this is a public forum and I am a member and I can post my OPINION on any thread I well please.

Your right Ridgerunner. DOUBLE STANDARDS seem to apply in this thread and it is absolutely not right. You cannot ban someone for their opinion and then turn around and post subject matter that is much worse.

Why cant people just realize that he is gone, JC got a new student and player. All this fuss over something that cant be controled by anyone on here.
