Personally, I would love that rematch to occur, but I just do not see it happening; DeSales could possibly finish third in their own district, so a game with Belfry, would certainly signify a decent Colts' run in the 2020 playoffs.

The defensive line, and summation of core athlete loss, is going to be exceedingly difficult for DeSales to overcome. If the 2019 team could lose four games, excluding the CAL game, which could have gone either way, next season's squad is just not going to proceed anywhere close to a game with Belfry.

IMO, Matney and his staff don't get enough credit for player development, especially on the line. A lot of people seem to think that big, strong lineman just walk through the door at JC ready to suit up.

I also don’t think they get enough credit for how well those linemen “move”. JC is second to none when it comes to blocking the 2nd and 3rd level.

As for Paintsville, I won’t consider them the favorite. Pikeville returns #8 and he will be excellent the next 2 years. Plus I’m sure they have athletes that were just waiting their turn behind this awesome group of seniors.

Paintsville will be tough as well. Return several 2 way players and the bulk of their O/D lines, they do lose Allen who was an excellent OLB/DE. Harris Phelps will probably be in the backfield or slot receiver. He’s going to get the ball, bottom line. No idea what Raceland returns but it would not matter if they were 2-6 going into the Paintsville game, it will be another 2 round war next year. Hopefully the RPI gets lucky again and the 2 best teams play in Lexington. I say lucky because neither Pikeville or Paintsville were seeded correctly.

Harlan County brings back a senior team in 2020. I'd be surprised if they aren't top 10.

Belfry 2020:

OFFENSE

Lose (5):
LT Sean Cochran
C Ethan Wolford
RB Ben Bentley
FB Peyton Hensley
SE Daniel Oliver

Return (6):
LG Tristan Dotson
RG Aiden Smith
RT Logan McCoy
TE Brad Lowe
QB Brett Coleman
RB Isaac Dixon

Other Key Returnees (Non-Starter):
QB Israel Canterbury- Started first two games
OL Garrett Smith- Was #2 on Depth Chart at C and RT. Expected to start at Center.

DEFENSE

Lose (7):
LB John Ashurst
DT Mason Washington
NG Jacob Baisden
DT Jonathan Stepp
RE Grayson Cook
FS Ben Bentley
CB Isaiah Birchfield

Return (4):
LE Brad Lowe
LB Seth Mounts
SS Brett Coleman
CB Tyler Chaffin

Other Key Returnees (Non-Starters):
CB Isaac Dixon- Starter in 2018, after injury and emergence of Chaffin was given a reduced role on Defense to keep fresh.

DE Rudy Blackwell- Started most of the season before Lowe returned as a Freshman. Had a significant injury late in the season he must recover from. Expected to be the other starting DE.

LB/S Neal Copley- Saw some minutes as a Freshman. Expect a much more increased role.

Notes:
- Offensively, Belfry has to like what they have to start with. Dixon will be one of the best players in EKY and Class 3A, and a potential All-State candidate. Coleman will be an experienced QB and they have a nice nucleus on the line. Finding a FB will be tricky as Hensley was essentially a HB playing FB and did it well. If the Pirates can develop a FB and a second big play threat at HB, and the line can develop over the Summer they will be worthy of a high ranking.

- Defensively, Belfry has some big gaps to fill with none being bigger than the heart of their D-Line. The Pirates lose all three starters and also Dylan Goff who was superb at times. Cook was a fixture for four years at DE. Blackwell has a ton of potential but will have to work hard to soften the blow. Birchfield and Bentley are massive holes to fill. Birchfield turned into one of the best CB's in 3A and EKY and recorded 8 INT's and became a lock down corner. Bentley was consistent and a big play maker. Chaffin improved dramatically filling in for Dixon and if Haywood lets Dixon play both ways he will bring some starting experience. Coleman will be solid as ever returning at Safety and Mounts will be a force in the middle.

- Special Teams wise losing Cook means finding a new PK and Punter. Kicking was always an adventure but Cook was a surprisingly effective Punter. Bentley was a tremendous kick returner and will be missed heavy, but Dixon when healthy is a highlight film waiting to happen.

Conclusion:
Belfry will be solid. I will raise my hand that I said that after 2019 the talent pool will start to dry up for Belfry, especially up front on both lines. I was beyond impressed with how the O-Line matured this season and though they lose their star and leader in Wolford, this should be a quality unit though depth will be questionable. Defensively, there may be some truth to my prophecy as that D-Line will be a scary proposition in the middle in a Class with some quality run games and veteran lines returning. The Pirates still have some great skill and Dixon is a bonafide superstar. The depth all around continues to thin though and this is alarming. You don't see that superstar in waiting like we have seen in the past, with the exception of maybe Blackwell. It is also scary not seeing that dominant Fullback that has been a fixture for basically the last 20 years. One thought is could we see Coleman move back to FB and let either Chaffin or Cantebrury run QB1?

Though I feel my doom and gloom prediction is not as gloomy as I anticipated, Belfry's margin for error or injury will be razor thin and significant improvement is an absolute must this summer at key positions.Outside of personnel, it is absolute a must that Belfry fills a full 10-game schedule with this new RPI system as the lack of that tenth game made their path tougher than it needed to be.

Ok so I don’t really care about the rest. I’m concerned with 4A. Soooo....

Just like last year, I always name the returning champ as long as it’s reasonable as the favorite. Last year that Boyle until we knocked them off. Next year it will be JC until someone knocks them off. From what I saw, they have an amazing line coming back. You could throw average backs in there and be decent with what they have. They’ll lose some early until they get some experience in, but finish strong.

Boyle will lose their key players that’s kept them in the chase the past few years. They’ll be solid, but not a contender I don’t think. Especially if they lose their coaches.

Wayne will have Sloan so they’ll be up there as well. Don’t know much outside of him coming back??

That brings us to corbin. Corbin will have a previous state champ class as juniors next year. With another state champ class behind them and possibly even better. They’ll be a tad young and inexperienced but talented none the less. My concern is COACHING. Haddix will score points! Not many have been able to stop him in past years, even the great ones. But the defense is what worries me. I absolutely LOVE OUR DC. and I’m not bad mouthing him! He’s a great person and cares for the kids. But I’m gonna be fair about this. Following greer is a tough act, but he’s in over his head and not ready for a job like that. We need to find someone who can. I don’t want rid of him, we just need someone running the D that knows what it takes. If Greer came back I’d put corbin up there right with JC as the favorite. But we also need some guys that can help develop the players. Haddix isn’t a defensive specialist, he can’t do it all. He needs a supporting cast just as smith, Haywood, matney, Beatty all have. If we can get those this off season we’ll be in great shape. If not I see us making it to the semis as our peak.

I just want to reiterate!!! I love our DC as a person. You won’t find to many better or coming from a better family. He went to school with my sister and is a great young man. I want him on our staff. I just don’t tbink he’s the man for the job, as this year showed. I would love to have Tommy come back, I’d take that as my early Christmas gift haha. But I don’t know if that’ll happen. But we’ve got to get some coach’s in there that have some good experience.

As long as the rumors are true about certain people bad mouthing Greer over state title game two years ago and the number of coaches that were ran off I don’t think Haddix will be able to recruit a top notch defensive coach. I could be wrong but by all accounts a lot of bridges were burned over how coaches were treated and talked about last year by a small group of people.

We lose a great center in Clifton but both guards, both tackles and our tight end will be back. Of those five returning two were sophomores and three were juniors.

I think Ryley only had two centers from his elementary days through the Boyle Co. game

Clifton 3rd-8th & 12th.
Byron Pierce 9th-11th.

In my opinion, Matney is one of the best at developing linemen and here's why.

Not only is he a great football coach but he's also a great wrestling coach as well. And trust me, when it comes to linemen, the two go hand and hand. My boy started wrestling in the 9th grade because Heywood told him to because it could help his speed, hips, hands, and overall movement and it was the best thing Ethan ever did. I can't even describe the difference it has made for him on the football field.

And that's why I think Matney is so good at developing his players. Coach Mat is great at both sports and he's outstanding at bringing it all together and making a complete, dominate, tough, hard nosed linemen.

As far as the predictions that Mayfield will be there, I really think this is the biggest rebuilding year for Mayfield in many, many years. I don't think they will be able to make it this coming year. I hope that I am wrong, but, I think we have 5 total seniors next year. Mayfield has to replace 4 wr's, 1 great qb and some linemen on offense. They also have to replace 5 starters on defense. To top that off, we also have to replace a kicker.

Raceland and Paintsville have built their programs into a top 5 team year in and year out. They also have the goods to make it to the finals any given year. But they both have a long way to go to be considered "favorites" any year.

You guys are seriously putting Paintsville #1 in the preseason?!?! So you think they are gonna be 40 points better next year? Pikeville has SOLID replacements for the guys they are losing, heck a lot of them are the younger brothers of the “playmakers” you are talking about them losing. Panthers will be just fine, I expect a couple bumps in the road but come talk to me in November. To be the man ya gotta beat the man.
