Home run hire FOR DUNBAR. The guy is the perfect fit for them. Very good HS coach.
2 things can be true at the same time. Dunbar is continuing down the road of not supporting football by hiring a guy who doesn't take a teaching job. Meanwhile given that Dunbar is a dumpster fire, Wes Johnson is a home run. Not a home run at Trinity, but a home run at Dunbar.

He didn't win those at powerhouse places, but at places that most of the time can't play dead in a cowboy and Indian movie.
Staffs aren't stacked from top to bottom hardly anywhere; maybe at your blue blood programs, but that's it.
Johnson has been an assistant since he left from being a HC; most notably at LCA in 2013.
In a previous post on this thread I said outside of Wood his staff is inexperienced that is a fact.

itâs not a home run hire for Dunbar by any stretch of the imagination. A home run hire would have been Ethan Atchley.

From 2008 to the present he only coached in 2013 that is concerning imo.

They would have had to have given him a teaching job. Among other things for that to happen.

Investing in the program and bringing on people to the staff do more than teach 4 blocks and who don't jet out of the parking lot after the last bell of the day are not what Dunbar has been about.

I might be bugging you guys by saying that. But I'm not bugging Betsy Rains and the sight based council. (The people who hire in that building) She has been proud of that.

You're obviously a huge fan of his, and that's cool. Since you're so close to him, can you tell us why he hasn't coached but one season since 2008? I just don't know any other profession where a guy can be mediocre, stay out of the field for close to 10 consecutive years, and then be considered for a big job.
Anyone?

Wes Johnson is not the biggest problem for this school. They had the opportunity to hire Oliver Lucas two years ago and instead went with Chris Mullins. Look what Lucas did at Clark County in his first year. I think Dunbar would have been competitive within their district by now if Lucas was the guy calling the shots.
This job could have pulled someone with credibility and who could have turned the program around two years back. Instead, they went with a coach who won 13 games in five years. Now, they're going with a guy with 26 wins in five years, but whose teams got worse over that span, including no playoff wins. At least Mullins had a playoff win, I believe.
I'm not trying to pile on Mullins or Johnson here. I'm just stating some facts and pointing out the level of incompetence behind these hires.

I think the issue is, who considers this a âbig jobâ? It is obvious you do, and as a fan you should, but do outsiders see it as a âbig jobâ?
I have no clue who Coach Johnson is but who were the other applicants. Maybe the options were not any better. I understand that you feel they over looked a good candidate in Coach Lucas (who I agree has a solid reputation of rebuilding programs) but maybe they did not have that quality of applicant this go round.

Dunbar is a tough job but it is a big time Ky H.S. job. It is one of the largest high schools in Kentucky located in the Jewel city of the state. Not many jobs get bigger than that, however, not many are tougher due to an admin completely controlled by parents/students everyone in Lexington knows that. As far as quality applicants the administration never advertised it on KHSAA or listserve. What School serious about football doesnât post their head job to sites that will give their vacancy maximum exposure?

You mean to tell me on top of everything else the guy won’t even be in the building teaching something? Man oh man Betsy and Jason out did themselves on this one.

Yeah but how many head coaches in Lexington could have added a former UK player coaching flag football and had 19 whopping career coaches to there staff. Magic Wes Johnson can and did the magic bulldog rebuild is well underway

Big job has two connotations:
1.) This is one of the largest schools in KY. It plays 6A football against the likes of Scott Co, Henry Clay, Frederick Douglass, etc. That's a big job.
2.) The program is at an all-time low. They went 0-10 last year. Now they're starting from scratch, essentially. That's a big job.
With that said, I do not believe interest was high. I believe they could have secured a quality coach two years ago, and completely dropped the ball. Thus, Wes Johnson.

Bottom line if you have a principal and athletic administration who wants their football program to succeed you WILL get a good head coach, you will never settle. Look at Douglass principal Diaz he went after his guy and got him. What job in Lexington beside Dunbar would hire Wes Johnson and then make a big deal about adding a former UK player who coached flag football and had 19 career catches to the staff? When Johnson was announced they knew the hire would be so underwhelming they spotlighted the hire of the former UK player to try and bring some luster to this hc hire but the former UK players achievements and experience are underwhelming to. Dunbar is completely out of touch with reality right now. Kids aren’t dumb.

Lex Cath might still be a big job. Go over to that thread and talk big job.

Iâve never met neither of them.
I canât. Just like I canât name any other professions that have the demands that being a high school Head football coach call for for such chite pay. I donât know if youâve noticed or not; but this isnât exactly some position (hshfc) where people are flocking, too anymore.
Go talk to some administrators on their now struggles on just how hard itâs becoming to fill teaching positions, let alone those who are qualified and want to devote the time and stress that come with coaching.
Why donât you do us all a favor and tell who in fact applied and should have gotten this job? There seems to be either A) beef with him getting it over somebody(s) else and/or B) you just think this is a much better job that 99.9% of all coaches in the state.

By the way. Iâm both Auburn and FLD; Iâd made another name (Auburn) for the other site (Free; not paying again) after being kicked off and made one for here. Got crossed up on here, but never paid much attention to which.
Iâve logged on here thinking I was on there. Lol

You point is exactly why I am critical of the Wes Johnson hire. Jewel city was not referencing the quality of the football played in Lexington rather the city the state is mostly known for due to UK being there, etc.

Your defining big program in terms of prestige and success, that is not how I am defining it regarding Dunbar. Dunbar is a big job because of its size, challenge and location. Itâs not a big time job in the same way Scott County or Danville is a big time job. Many people would regard a head coaching job at the 6A level anywhere let alone Lexington a big job, not necessarily prestigious but big.

It is not a slam on Johnson as much as it is on an administration who seems uninterested or completely in the dark on selecting and keeping coaches. Dunbar is not a better job than anywhere else per se but has nice facilities, large student population in Lexington with higher teacher pay than most counties. It should have been able attract a coach with a better track record, especially one who has been out of the game nine out of the last ten years. No offense to him he would not have had an interview at any other Lexington school then again no other school in Lex is dunbar

Just out of curiosity, because I honestly do not know, how many high school football wins did Landis, Shaw, Sims, Parks, and Simpson have combined prior to taking the head coaching job at their respective Lexington schools.
Just curious. Anyone know?

0,0,0 and 0 for the first 4.
Simpson had previously been HC at Marion. I don't know the total but he was coming off a 9-2 when the took the job at Clay.

That's what I thought. So Coach Johnson and coach Wood both have head coaching experience coming into Dunbar and have a combined 56 wins in high school football and two playoff victories between them. And both have beaten coaches with state championship rings. I'm not sure where all the talk is coming from in terms of inexperience. That doesn't sound like an inexperience to me. Sounds like every other city school went with an unproven coach and hoped they worked out. Dunbar has entrusted their program to a coach with high school football wins and some big victories over some prominent coaches, and on that staff is also an assistant with some high school wins with victories over some pretty good coaches as well. These are not Opinions, these are facts. They both came from schools that were horrible and then they brought success. Then after they left both schools were shit again. I agree with some criticism, but totally trash the higher is not looking at any facts. It's just going off of feelings and names of people who may or may not have applied.

You make some good points I'll buy it although there is some credibility with Landis coaching in the college ranks and Shaw playing in the NFL but I will give you they weren't head coaches before getting there jobs. At the end of the day it doesn't matter much anyway it is his job now and he will have to produce time will tell if he does or not. Tomorrow is day one and a lot of people are going to be watching his every move out there trust me.
