Knoxville Catholic @ Belfry
#91
Catholic Starting Defense:

DE #34 James Orler 6'0 230 Sr
DT #60 Charlie Connors 6'2 260 Jr
DT #57 Austin Rowan 6'0 260 Sr
DE #15 Nick Lovely 6'0 185
*DE #76 John Kerbyson 6'4 280 Jr* He doesn't start but they play him a lot..about 40-50% of the snaps

LB #21 Tony Scott 6'2 205 Jr
LB #22 Joe Fluker 5'10 200 Soph
LB #33 Augustus Fortune 6'0 215 Sr
LB #44 Jones Albritton 6'1 200 Sr

DB #5 Hunter Kountz 5'11 185 Jr
DB #48 Morgan Ernst 5'11 185 Soph
DB #32 Jack Staley 5'11 165 Sr
*DB #3 Amari Rodgers* They use him a good bit as a Nickel or their primary sub

Thoughts:
As impressive as they look on Offense, Defensively they don't jump out. The LB Fortune is a ball player. He is all over the field and makes tackles in the box, outside, or in pursuit. Have to keep a hat on him at all times..he is opportunistic as well and will force turnovers.

By and large they look a lot like NewCath on Defense to me in the Front 7. Nice size, good speed, lean and athletic. The only difference is they don't have a D-Linemen who jumped out like the Lawrence kid from NewCath. I think Belfry will move the ball on them and if they execute to the best of their ability Belfry's offense will cause some troubles and maybe pop a big play or two.

Their secondary is made for Spread Offenses.. smallish and quick. They are not like NewCath with big, strong kids who can come up hard in run support. If Belfry can get to that second level and block downfield it could be advantageous.

The X-Factor is #76 Kerbyson. As I pointed out they use him a lot and he is more of their pass rush/penetration specialist. He has a great mix of size and speed and may give Belfry some trouble. You couldn't pick a better guy to help Belfry prepare for the DE from Cabell Midland next week who is going to WVU. Have to keep him out of the backfield and keep him from breaking up the mesh point.

They havent seen anything like Belfry's offensive style. Everyone they have played run the spread and rarely run power and want to score in a hurry. The ultimate mystery in this game is how they react to Belfry's time consuming drives and being perfectly content to not throw a pass.

What I will say is penalties will be a killer this week. If Belfry is forced into 3rd and Long
they will really struggle against this type of Defense.

Special Teams Thoughts:
This team is very good in Special Teams. Rodgers is the best return man Belfry has seen in years and he does it in Kickoff and Punts. Woolum has to kick it into the endzone every kickoff. Wellman needs to either get plenty of hang time or kick it away from him. Every kick is dangerous and they do a great job of setting big time blocks.

Their kickers are washes with Belfry's and that is a major compliment. Dont expect many returnable opportunities. Their FG kicker is good from 45 yards.

They are without Jack Schewmperack (sp) who is I believe QB 2 but from what I gather he was one of their better DBs or LBs

Can we honestly beat this team?

Gosh great insight coach!!! Belfry has never had time consuming drives against anyone any good, like 20 plays against CAK last year and 15 plays against Pikeville last week and i could go on and on...get under your rock troll under your rock!!! And when we played the cupcake WC we had no time consuming drives.;..the scoreboard changed quicker than the weather does.

We have played and beat many teams better, but this KC team is very good and could easily win. I expect a great game could go back and forth like the CAK game two years ago, but this team is more takented than that CAK team.

I dont hate anybody.I was born in and live closer to Tennesee than Belfry is to West Virginia. I took a short trip to Knoxville today and passed several Knox County schools such as Powell, Fulton and Halls, but I absolutely love ALL of the Bluegrass State Smile

You must get a kickback from Maryville for mentioning their name. Belfry may or may not beat Maryville, but they sure wouldn't be scared to play them. Champions like playing champions.

I just dont sugar coat.Belfry would get hammered and you know they would Smile. Knoxville Catholic is not as good as Belfry fans pump them up to be.if you want to brag about playing a good Tennessee team at least play a team like Alcoa.

Nobody is pumping them up. They have a lot of talent and Belfry will have to come to play. At least Belfry doesn't care where they have to go to find decent competition unlike a lot of schools who love to feast on the local teams.

true. and Knox Catholic is ok but they are not in the same league as the top Tennessee teams. Kentucky, overall is seriously way behind Tennessee when it comes to high school football.
I don't think anyone has ever debated that if Belfry played teams like Maryville, Alcoa, Trinity or other National Powerhouses that they would probably get squashed. I can tell you one thing though if they would play and it was beneficial to the team then Haywood would schedule them. What good would that do either team in the current situation? Do those teams really need another squash game? Does Belfry need games on their schedule that won't help them get better?

Belfry has two goals in mind each season. 1) foster upstanding and honorable men who will go into the world prepared for it and 2) win 3A state championships. I for the life of me will never understand all the desire to knock Belfry down by some in this site. For nearly 40 years Belfry has had success and played at a high level with barely any down years. Belfry only needs to schedule teams that are strong enough to prepare them for the 3A playoffs, they don't need to schedule Maryville or Alcoa to do that. Knox Cath is a quality opponent and to demean them as cupcake isn't cool in my book. Belfry may hammer them, they may hammer Belfry. It may be a heck of a game until the final whistle. In the end it doesn't really matter one way or the other because it will accomplish what it is there to accomplish and that is to prepare them against speed and the spread.

I understand it's hard to be a fan of a mediocre team year in and year out but constantly belittling a team who would beat your socks off doesn't make your team better or earn you any respect.
Dang I don't usually feed the trolls but couldn't resist this time.

The arrogant fans that bash my team and act like their team is playing against the Green Bay Packers when in reality they are playing a mediocre team brings out the troll in me :trolldad2:

May or may not be true, but ask Ensworth how Trinity tasted this year and they are not even Ky's best this year.

Ensworth is down and not Tennessee's best. They have a 2-3 record losing to two Tennessee teams already.
Knox Cath may be a mediocre TN school, this is true, but you said it yourself TN is seriously way ahead of KY in terms of HSFB so in essence wouldn't that mean you yourself are admitting that Knox Cath is equal to some of the better competition that could be found in the state of KY? Since TN is way ahead of KY I would think a solid TN team would be equal to a top 15 KY team and its that the type of competition that you say Belfry should schedule?

I'd put highlands, trinity, Saint x, against any team from Tennessee most years

Not enough pictures and too many words for them to follow along. Confusednicker:
I don't know anything about Knoxville Catholic, so i will not make a prediction. I do know the boys in red from the bluegrass are some hard hitting, ground and pound you into submission players, and will represent KY well.

Good luck Belfry. Kick some orange ass!!!!!!
