Hopkinsville received some votes. Barely missed out. There around the 11 to 14 range

Yea I like putting them on there as well. If anything they should only be left off in the preseason when you get some crazy rankings when voters don't know as much about a certain class and so on.
I'll see what I can do next week.

[quote=samson81]There does appear to be more parity from top to bottom this year. Mayfield and Highlands moving up to more challenging classes really opened things up in 1A and 4A.

I can imagine you guys awake at 2am agonizing over these polls.[/QUOTT

They moved up to a bigger class, but I do not think it is more challenging. Last years 4A class much tougher than this years 5A.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment that 2014 4A > 2015 5A. Highlands path to a title may have been tougher than usual last year, but I think that had more to do with Highlands being slightly "down" compared to years past.

To win 5A this year, Highlands would probably have to beat CovCath to win the region(just like last year), either Pulaski Co. or Southwestern in the semis(personally, I think they're both an upgrade over LexCath), and then likely Bowling Green in the championship game. I think BG is a better team this year than Owensboro was last year and for what it's worth, Owensboro also moved up to 5A.

We won't truly know which class is better until the season is completed, but for now give me 5A in 2015 over 4A in 2014.
#35
I agree with Samson on that.
I was under the same thinking as sstack until I actually looked at it this year. I would take BG, pulaski, and Southwestern over boyle, lexcath, and cov Cath for sure right now. Not to mention Highlands still has cov Cath and gained Dixie heights.

Nice rankings. Seem pretty close. In 6A I'd put Cooper above Simon Kenton for now. Lots of questions will be answered on the field this year in NKY as Cooper, Ryle, Simon Kenton, and Highlands all play each other. Going to be a good year to be a football fan.
#37
IMO you cannot use scrimmages to base any argument for a team being ranked or not ranked, they are scrimmages, has anybody send NFL preseason? No way you can rank the NFL on preseason games. I just can't put a lot of stock into and scrimmage.
#38
In Ryle's defense to losing to Bryan Station so badly, I was told Station didn't bring that many players. When the starters for both squads were in it was tight. When Ryle put there 2nd and sometimes 3rd stringers Station still had starters on the field.

The fact that 3 of 14 voters voted John Hardin #1 should disqualify them from future voting. The least the entire panel should do before voting is to check the scores of the top games from the week before. The 4A vote totals undermine the credibility of all of the rankings.

For those who did manage to carve out some time to do your homework before casting their ballots, thank you.

Agreed. Fired. How can you participate if you don't even check scores.

Gut, are there any plans to do a Cantrall/Litkenhous type of poll to rank the entire state? Obviously no computers involved, which in my book is a good thing. I know it would mean even more work for the panel of voters, but I thought it would be a fun idea.

Anyway, just a thought.

I would definitely like to try that. It would seem like a fun thing to do to have a complete state ranking but it would be extremely difficult and I just don't see the time to do it. It would literally take a complete and non stop effort on the part of several people and its extremely difficult just to make sure all voters get there votes in on time because everything is over the net. No face to face contributing. I do think we are starting to need a little help on staff. It hasn't been talked about but if we continue to get more and more traffic and as few active mods as we have then it would be nice to get a new staff member and assign something like this to them. It's always an option.
We could always create our own BCS software to rank the teams Confusednicker:

A couple of observations:

1) Ryle loses by 30 to B.Station in a scrimmage and then BS has a very impressive win over a good, not great, Knox team. Surprised BS didn't get in the Top 10 while Ryle did.

2) Surprised John Hardin stayed as high as they did at #3.

3) Mayfield and Desales deadlocked at #1. Really a tough one to call either way. While 3-6 are solid teams, I think these 2 are head and shoulders above the rest in 2a.

4) 3a is a bear to pick. The top 8 teams look really strong.

Ryles win over Covcath certainly helped them. Cooper has grounds for being in the top 10 as well. As stated earlier by Hop 24.... Ryle, Cooper, and SK all play each other this season so there should be a well defined 6A top 10 representative by seasons end. maybe two NKY 6A teams in the top 10 based on potential circumstances.

BS gets to earn a top 10 position if they knock off Simon Kenton this week. I'd be shocked if they aren't in the top 10 next week if they do beat the Pioneers!!!

In fairness to those who voted John Hardin at #1, there was a thread started here on BGR that had the score backwards and stayed up for a long time Saturday night before it was moved.
I agree its absurd to rank John Hardin in 1st, but I assure you those who did were confused by that, although there is no excuse for not checking the KHSAA website to be sure. I expect some major changes this week.
Given a little time, I expect everyone to set in nicely. A lot of these members who are voting have never done anything like this and make it takes some adjusting.

Ranking teams will not get any easier than it was in Week Zero. Beginning next week, conscientious voters will need to start comparing scores of more than 60 teams and look for common opponents among potential top 10 teams. The people who don't have the time to do a good job with the rankings should step aside sooner rather than later.

Part of the fun of rankings is that sometimes game scores don't tell you everything. The call was put out for voters well ahead of time. If you don't like how someone voted, guess what? They probably wouldn't like how you vote. There's always one or two outliers in every poll of this type. People are taking their own personal time to vote and consider the scores, competition, etc. There are no set standard criteria. Some people vote based on potential and some vote on actual past game results, etc. Chill on hammering those who are participating just because you don't like the results of one particular class. Most comments I have seen have stated that the polls overall are fairly applied given how early in the season it is.

In my opinion common opponents and previous games is what makes it easier. I don't know that I've ever heard anyone say it gets tougher as the season moves along. Teams start separating them selves around the 3rd and 4th week away from the rest if the field. Preseason and week one rankings have IMO always been a lot tougher to gauge. Other than the glitch from John Hardin I haven't heard any major negative opinions and looking at the rest of the field I do not see how an argument can't be made for any other team in all classes for where they currently stand.

Head to head match-ups are the best way to compare the relative strengths of two teams. 3 of 14 voters either dismissed South Warren's crushing defeat of John Hardin as a fluke or could not find time to check the result of the head to head match-up between two of the top three teams in 4A. I agree that it is possible to rank teams more accurately as they play through their schedules and results between common opponents become available. However, the time it takes to review 5 or 10 results for each of more than 60 teams is much more than the time that it takes to review the head to head results in the first week of the season.

When I helped rank teams on another website in the past, I created a spreadsheet listing the potential top 10 teams in each class. Then, I created links to the schedule/results on the KHSAA website for each team. It takes some time to set up the first time, but it saves a lot of time over the course of a season.

I know that it takes a lot of time to do a reasonably good job of ranking 60 teams every week, and I appreciate the effort of those who devoted the necessary time last week.

I am sure that not everybody would like how I would vote, but I would not vote at all if I was too busy to check the scores of one week's worth of games.

And again, box scores don't tell everything. Do you really think, for example, if Paintsville goes up and beats Frankfort, that vaults them more? No. Because Robinson is out as I understand it. Will it be totally discounted? Again, no. But it's part of the whole, not the whole. That's why Paris didn't rise a ton in my eyes. Nice name win, but not totally convincing. I would take a wait and see attitude.

Paris was up on Frankfort at halftime before Robinson went down in the second half is what I was told. I don't think nobody is giving paris credit for beating Frankfort Nobody is showing Paris any love. When Paris gets there starting Qb back they will be even better. 64SUR....:Cheerlead Go Eastern Kentucky 1A football.

What untold story accounts for John Hardin being ranked #3 in 4A with as many first place votes as #1 Johnson Central? Of course there are factors such as illness and injuries that are not reflected in scores, but nothing does a better job deciding which team is the better of two teams than a head to head match-up - particularly when one team thoroughly dominates that game.

Hopefully the three people who saw fit to rank John Hardin #1 this week will put a little more thought into next week's voting. Like I said, it won't get any easier as the number of results to consider will increase every week. It's fine if a voter believes that their expertise is such that they can take into account injuries and other factors into the rankings for teams throughout the state in addition to the scores that determine winners and losers. However, the least that they can do is learn which of the top contenders in each class won and which ones lost.

Ahh, maybe I misunderstood. I was told Paris was down but it was close. Either way I can't be a single game that vaults someone to the top IMO so early in a season. But now that many have a game under their belt, the scoreboard DOES start to take on a little more significance. For example, I would be paying close attention to 3 games in 1A to determine more about the top 5. Beechwood, Paintsville, and Pikeville. Russellville game needs to also be another strong or steady showing for them considering week 0 and week 1 opponents are basically even in my eyes in terms of what kind of challenge they provide Russellville.
