My heart says Pirates by 2 TD's in this one (Sorry Granny). However after the PCB there are a ton of unanswered questions.

While we saw a Pirate team that was smooth, quick and talented that made few mistakes we are left wondering. Was Henry Clay overconfident, over-hyped, tired from the long ride and game-time delay? This early in the year we don't normally see a Belfry team as mistake free as they were Friday night. The Pirates looked to be in mid-season form on day 1 of the regular season, this is both scary and exciting.

If the Black Bears get up on the Pirates do they have that motivational leader that Sani was (ala down big to Pike Central last year).

Last years team had the identity of a second half team with a kid who never gave up under center. This years team is still finding its identity but if Fridays dominance was any indication of what that identity is going to be then this could be a very, very fun season for Pirate fans.

Belfry - 27
Harlan Co - 14

Good analysis. I think we all have to slow down and realize a lot of football is to be played. This was just one game. Larkey is old school just like Haywood and he will have a good game plan. Belfry's biggest hurdle will be complacency. Having people "crown" you after one game is dangerous. Haywood and the staff will preach staying grounded and getting better each day, but kids are kids and they like to have that "swag" so we will see. Some of my other thoughts after the Henry Clay game.
-Henry Clay was ultra athletic, but they need an identity. Why pass if you are having success running? Spread teams sometime don't know who they are because they mix in the run and the pass a lot. Balance is great, but if you are gashing a defense on the ground, why raise up and throw in relatively short yardage situations?
-Did anything concern me about Belfry? Yes. The fact they looked so good so early. Will this week be a repeat or will they come back down to Earth? I think they need a good test from Harlan County with some adversity thrown their way. Adversity causes teams to focus and keeps the egos in check.
-This is potentially the deepest Belfry team I have seen. 9-10 offensive lineman rotated in and out with no noticeable drop off in production. 3 fullbacks were used by the second quarter including freshman Derek Wellman...they never missed a beat. Austin Hall gives more depth at HB and it's needed with Catron out.
-Nate Sanger at LB is much improved. This gives Hatfield a chance to rest and if Belfry wants to go small, they brought in Hatfield at LB and moved Sanger to nose in place of Whitt.
-Kaleb Edwards gave great run support from a safety position.
-Will be interesting to see if another CB is groomed to give Keaton Taylor some rest on D.
-The two (for all you haters ) transfers didn't start, but both played well. Joplin at HB and Corbett at WR.
-Update from Catron's Dr. visit. No surgery required on collarbone. Recheck in 4 weeks and a 6 week timetable to return.

Everyone has spoke to the leadership issue with this team, let me tell you an example of why I think this team will be okay. Tradition at Belfry as all of us fans know is we raise our helmets during the time between the end of the 3rd quarter and the first play of the 4th quarter. I saw an offensive lineman I believe it was number 61, get on a player who I'm not gonna call out for goofing off and twirling his helmet on his hand, the player didn't immediately respond, 61 then got in his face and pointed toward the locker room and I can only assume said put it up or head to the locker room. The player got the picture and his helmet was held high until the first play of the 4th quarter was over. Examples of this may be found in most games and with most teams, but to all the people that don't understand "the belfry way" this is why we are consistent this is why we are who we are, and young man I commend you for carrying on the tradition of leadership and doing things the right way that so many of us fought to establish "Pirate Pride"

What is good about that is that # 61 is just a sophomore. He is already showing leadership. That's a good sign and I believe a sign of good things to come.

You have no idea Granny how bad the first games of the season usually go for the pirates. Most teams have a rough time getting their feet under them and actually start clicking as a team. This first game against Henry Clay was not the case. That's why it scares us so bad Lol. I believe we only had 4 penalties which is almost unheard of for belfry and No turnovers. That also is a first I can remember in a long time. Will it keep going like that. Only time will tell.

Harlan County will match up better defensively against Belfry's O than Henry Clay did. Harlan County is built to play smashmouth football and be stout against the run. Add in Larkey - who knows power football and how to defend against it, and I think your looking a real good football game Friday night.

Lol. It's all in fun.
^^
Hmmmm...what's he been up to now???

Hey, I know what you're saying about slow starts & penalties!! Add the fumbles, too.
After watching some film, I don't see Harlan County stopping our run, especially with the line blocking the way they did last week. From what I saw, their D-Line likes go striaght for the knees with their heads down. It's hard to stop someone running the football if you can't see them coming. I didn't watch the entire game, so I don't know if they continued to do it, just the first few series. They looked pretty tough though, I'm excited to watch this game!

All this talk of football, I'm going for the food. All this dieting is killing me and I need some greasy country food, cake and then football. Oh and go bears, let's chew up some pirates.. Confusednicker:
All you do is eat and go back to bed!! Per YOUR words.
Yes I do eat. About 4000 calories a day but its crappy tasting health food. I need some artery clogging, good tasting, cooked in lard fried chicken. Lol

Harlan Co.--24 Belfry--21.
Where's that rotten grannybear at. This thread has died. We need some more friendly trash talk how the bears don't stand a chance in Death Valley.
Demarcus Ware is so excited he has left for the game a couple days early:

Larkey has employed some new tactics to improve flexibility in hopes of aiding against the Belfry speed advantage

Caldwell is a monster, but the rest of the team is a bit too green under the gills it seems...

Those should get her going. Lol. That's hilarious.
And I know she has some pics of her own after she sees those.
Should be a classic, I have respect for both programs. If I was going here's how I would
pick it.

If Granny Bear brings cake, I would go with the Bears to guarantee a slice. If Granny
Bear doesn't bring cake, I would go with the Pirates.. It's all about the cake!!!!!!
Cake doesn't lie!
