They lost one kid off the defensive side of the ball...we beat a great football team, HC just wasn't as tough in the trenches,

Some great football mind (can't remember WHO that was) posted before this game that strength would be Henry Clay's achilles heel.

Is Catron really going to miss the entire season? That breaks my heart for that kid. He was going to have a great season.

If it is a collar bone he will be out 6-8 weeks.
One thing I don't doubt is that this kid won't absolutely kill his rehab. From what I have heard about his work ethic and drive his rehab won't even be a question.
Barring something unforeseen I say you may see him by the JC game in Week 10.
If he is not 100% by then my guess is Week 2 of the playoffs.

LC could have hung a 100 on Boyd or Rowan easily but we are more classy than that. No use in it when can get the rest of the team involved and younger kids some playing time. Keep thinking the way you are Belfry I think you are gonna be in for the shock of your life.
We wont be shocked By LC that's for sure.. and to say you could've hung a 100 on Boyd or Rowan, WOW, that's and accomplishment...HC would've hung, could've hung 100 on LC, I will give LC some credit, maybe you did get better from last year, but still won't be within 3 TDs of us...

That Gibbs kid looked pretty darn good last night. Saw him finishing blocks 10 yards downfield all night. Someone has been working hard this summer it looks like.

Congrats Pirates from Warrior land!!!!! Congrats to all esp OL Coach Brad Allen. I know Belfry has stud OL but from the posts on here it seems you had them ready to go. Hoping for continued success.

EKUAlum05 Wrote:A few more after thoughts:
- I have to start with the OLine. Simply "WOW"! Francis, Gibbs, Dotson, Preece, Scott, Bentley, Horton, and anyone else I miss I apologize. Hatfield deservingly got Player of the Game but these monsters were the story. When Belfry won the Title in 2003 they called that dominant group "The Death Vallley Mules". This group deserves their own nickname... I am thinking:
HAYWOOD'S HAWGS
- X Willis looked really, really good. Loved his wiggle and pad level.
- I am a big Ray Horton fan but his stat line won't say the role he played on that game. He was constantly double teamed and was still penetrating the backfield every play...disrupting plays... causing Backs to change their angle.. Henry Clay only had 18 yards passing...the biggest reason was the fact Horton and company was forcing James to tuck and scamper with penetration. This kid is going to be special.
- Austin Hall had a nice night. The Interception looked eerily similar to the State Finals and he came up with 2 or 3 crucial tackles on the outside that helped thwart Henry Clay drives including the big tackle for loss in the 4th Quarter when HC was driving.
- Keaton Taylor looked like he had been the starting QB for years. Not quite to Sani's "smoothness" level, but for the season opener he looked sensational running the belly. When he ran he looked good as well, and on Defense he was a shutdown corner and had I think 3 PBR's.
- It bares repeating...that Kickoff Return was one of the best I have ever seen at the HS Level. The kid literally was being gang tackled by 3 Pirates and slipped it then had 2 more Pirates within 2 yards of him. I know there was some fumble/lateral controversy and truth be told it actually should have been nullified... but I am of the belief that those 7 points DESERVED to be kept on the board simply because that return was so awesome.
- Speaking of special teams...the only negative of the night. Uncharacteristic night for Woolum with a blocked XP and a missed Belfry only missed 2 XP's all of last year with Woolum. I will chalk it up to early season jitters and new personnel around him. Suffice to say Belfry can't leave point off the board with their schedule.
I knew Woolum had a bad night and was telling people he only missed a couple last yr and had game winner in title game..

How many different backs did Belfry run last night?

Hatfield, X, and Catron started. Fletcher and Wellman were in quick at FB. Joplin and Hall relieved at HB. That is 7. Did I miss any?

Another question is how many O lineman did they rotate? I know at one time in the first half I had counted at least 8 and I believe there was another one or two in there not counting Bentley and several plays by Horton at TE.

I've heard a lot about this kid. Sounds like a real go getter with some great work ethic.
I heard his dad was an asshole, though.

Belfry, WV that's funny. what is he talking about? that game was never really out of reach. we didn't run up the score. and we will beat LC worse so get ready. Oh let us hear it too, Henry Clay wasn't that good.

The mighty Belfry is the best team in the entire world. Since the invention of football nobody has been more powerful than the guys with the eyepatches and wooden legs.

I suppose we all have "those" kind of fans.
I stand by my comment. I don't see anyone beating Belfry. HC is not a bad team. There athletic abilities alone would beat most mountain teams. I don't think Harlan County, Johnson Central, or anyone else in 3A is as good as them.
I think its a good year to be a Belfry fan.

I don't know Gut.
CAK is now 2-0 in dominating fashion including beating a team they lost to last year. They play a really strong big school out of Knoxville this week. If CAK wins that may cement them as a very dangerous team.

Ill be honest, I forgot about CAK being on Belfrys schedule. BUT, its definitely winnable. It seems like the majority of the time when good EKY teams play TN teams they usually come out ahead unless its one of the true powerhouses down there.
Notice the reason Corbin and Whitley never head to Alcoa or Maryville. It wouldn't be fun. I think Belfry will handle CAK.

Congrats to Belfry on the W. Always good to see a Mountain team Dominate a city team. It's hard to beat Belfry... Its about impossible when they have no turnovers!
