Rating the Regions
#1
How would you rank the regions 1-16? Here is my attempt.

1- 9th region- Three teams in the top 8 in the state.
2- 7th region- It's tough not to put the 7th as #1 with Ballard and Trinity both in the top three in the state.
3- 11th. Two teams in the top-10, 3 in the top-17. And then you have teams like Lex Cath and Bryan Station at the next tier. Brutal comes to mind.
4- 6th. Two teams in the top-14 in the state. PRP and Doss are for real.
5- 12th. Wayne and Lincoln Co are both tough.
6- 14th. Three teams ranked between 15 and 25 in the state.
7- 8th. South Oldham and Collins are both in the top-25.
8- 10th. Montgomery Co is the class of the 10th.
9- 4th. Warren Central is a heavy favorite to win the 4th.
10- 2nd. Hopkinsville at #5 and Henderson Co at #22 then huge drop-off. Two team race for the 2nd region champion.
11- 5th. E'town at #16 is the strong favorite to win the 5th.
12- 3rd. Apollo and Owensboro are the two favorites. Neither are close to top-25 teams.
13- 1st. Graves and McCracken are the favorites. Not much out in the far west this year.
14- 16th. Fleming Co is a strong favorite and they aren't very strong.
15- 13th. Lots and lots of balance but not much else at the top of the 13th this year. Knox Central and Clay Co are playing the best during the last month. Jackson Co is close behind.
16- 15th. Johnson Central will probably win the 15th. There is not a lot along the West Virginia border this year.

15th is better than the 13th

I have to agree with you on this Rojas. Very good list! I honestly think the 14th is as good as the 6th and 12th region though. I can't say better because KCC has lost to PRP and Wayne but I think those 3 regions are real close. I think the 9th and 7th are easily 1 & 2 though.

That one was a tough call. The way I see it:

Johnson Central (15) would be an solid favorite over Clay County (13).
Knox Central (13) would be solid favorite over Lawrence Co (15)
Jackson Co (13) would be a favorite over Shelby Valley (15)
Corbin (13) would be a very solid favorite over Betsy Layne (15)

While Johnson Central is better than any team in the 13th. After that the 13th is better.

I also think the 14th is close to the 6th and 12th. The 14th is one of the state's more interesting regions. I look for Perry Central or Knott Central to come out of this one. I can't see Cordia winning it right now. Of course, Hazard has a shot.

9th, 7th and 11th will be a dog fight among the state's best.

The 5th Region has four teams (Elizabethtown, Bardstown, John Hardin, Taylor County) above a 70.0 rating. Fourth has three, Second only has two. Fifth region has four teams with a better rating than the No. 1 team in the First. Elizabethtown just beat the living daylights out of the top team in the Tenth (Montgomery) on a neutral floor.

As far as the Eighth, the No. 6 team (North Oldham) in the Eighth is 0-2-1 in regulation against the 5th. The No. 5 team (Shelby) lost to the No. 6 from the Fifth (Thomas Nelson). Collins faces John Hardin, so we'll get a better idea.

You can make a case for the 5th to be a top-eight region.

E'town is a solid team at 17-5 and #16 in the state. However, no other team in the 5th is even in the state's top-25 teams. The 2nd is in about the same boat as the 5th, except Hopkinsville is probably better than E'town at the #1 spot. The 4th and the 5th are also very comparable. What the 8th has that the 5th doesn't is a bit more depth at the top of the region. As far as beating the #1 team in the first, that's nothing to brag about. The top of the first is not very good.

Fifth may only have 1 in the top 25, but it has four in the top 49.

Compare that to regions you have in the Fifth's vicinity (some above, some below).

-- Fifth region has FOUR in the top 49 (Elizabethtown, John Hardin, Bardstown, Taylor).
-- First region has ZERO in the top 54.
-- Fourth region has two in the top 55 (Warren Central, Bowling Green).
-- Eighth region has three in the top 56 (South Oldham, Collins, Oldham Co.).
-- Second region has two in the top 68 (Hopkinsville, Henderson).
-- Third region has two in the top 74 (Apollo, Owensboro).

I think top four is a better indicator of the region's strength compared to the top 2 or 1. FOUR in top 49 is better than three in top 56 (which shows FIFTH has more depth at top compared to the eighth).

If Syracuse was in the Sun Belt, would you consider the Sun Belt strong in college? I wouldn't.

If we're basing it on the top team, the ACC was better than the SEC football this season (which we know is not true).

The 9th has 3 very good teams then Dixie Heights. The rest isn't overly tough. I wouldn't say it's the best region in the state.

The 11th region from top to bottom to me is the best. Scott County, Lafayette, Lex Cath, Henry Clay, Madison Central, Dunbar, Bryan Station.

I'd put the 7th region 2nd.

^ You bring up some good points. I like looking at the top-4 teams. I also like your idea of using computer rankings. Let's see how they compare using your methodology. Let's try the average Cantrell computer ratings of the top 4 in each region.

7th 80.9
11th 79.9
6th 78.4
12th 77.8
14th 76.8
8th 74.8

5th 72.5
