Top 10 Clay Co. teams and players ever?
#31
Who was on the '82 team? Richard Hampton, Jimmy Brown, Marty Roberts, Lonnie Bowling?
#32
These are all great posts, Clay Co. has had some great players and teams over the years.
#33
I honestly can't remember much about the Pearl Hicks team. I was just a little kid when I attended the regional finals when Clay County beat Harlan at Cawood. That was the first year the school was open. Was Pearl Hicks on this team by chance? I'm guessing not. I have heard stories about Pearl Hicks knocking a Harlan High student fan out when the student ran out onto the floor during a scuffle at the old Harlan High School gym. The Harlan High gym was opened a year or two before Cawood opened so if this happened at the old Harlan gym Hicks had probably graduated by the first regional at Cawood.

I will stick with the 1991 team.

Nevermind, I have answered my own question. I see where the Pearl Hicks led Clay County to the 1963 regional championship. Clay Co. beat Knox Central by 14 in the first round, Evarts (led by Ken Hicks) by only 6 in the semi-finals, and Lone Jack by 20 in the championship game.

Clay County had a record of 24-10 in 63 and lost a heartbreaker to Maysville in the Sweet 16 by a score of 66-65.

Most places don't have 10 regional championships let alone argue about their top 10 teams. Watching Bobby Keith and the Tigers swagger into the gym used to be a show.

Clay County is 3rd in the state. Owensboro has the most with 41. Ashland has 32. Clay County is 10th in Sweet 16 wins.

The talent was off the charts in the old days statewide. That is why 87 team is 4th best. Not as many kids put the same time in the game anymore. I never see games in the frontyard anymore.Times change, but the games goes on. Love tourney time!!

That list isn't very good. Smith and Griffin were good, but not close to top 10 all time. Stephen Asher would have to be listed before Jeremy.

My spelling is bad and names could be wrong, will also miss someone. My 10 in no order. Ray Mills, Skemp Cambell, Skyler Garrison,Gary Gregory, Rollie Penington (before knee injury),Glenn Bishop, Richie Farmer, Russ Chadwell, Shannon Hoskins, Stephen Asher. How about some names from the 60s.
#44
If some of you aren't even from Clay County, this is impressive. Just goes to show how dominate the program once was.

There is so many good players in CC history that it is nearly impossible to have an all time top 5 or 10. Here's some notable players starting from 2013 as far back as I can go:

Chip McDaniel, Matthew Mitchell, Kendale Reed, Justin Hobbs, Will Jones, Rodney Mitchell, Brian Griffin, Jeremy Asher, Jason Hibbard, Steven Asher, Antwan Henson, Shane Brumley, Darrell Hoskins, Robert Marcum, Shannon Hoskins, Lloyd Collins, Rodger Simms, Russ Farmer, Richie Farmer, Russ Chadwell, Sean Pennington, Eddie Smith, Todd McDaniel Sr, Sammy Lee, Russell Corum, Glenn Bishop, Joe Lyttle, Marty Roberts. Add Chris McKissic to that group. After this it is all on hearsay.
Gary Gregory, Butch Grubb, Marcus McKissic, Pearl Hicks, Gilford Hubbard, Larry Sizemore, Skimp Campbell, Clayton Stivers, Skyler Garrison, Ray Mills, Herman Hibbard, and the legend himself, Pat House. This is a list right off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a lot more that I've left off or you could argue as great players to wear the black and gold.
#46
A player has to be 1st team all state to be on the list I would think. How many would that be?
#47
Very hard to say. I think most everyone on my list either scored over 1000 points and/or was at least All State Honorable Mention.
#48
It is virtually impossible to make a list of 10 or so.
#49
If the NBA can pick an all century team I think someone could narrow the Clay list down to 10.
If I was wanting the most accurate list, I know who i would ask.
#50
I think Mr. Bobby Keith would be a great one to ask. However, he wasn't around when some of the greats of the early 50's starred for the Black and Gold. I know Keith is a big proponent of Coach Marcum and he expects the tradition to return.
#51
That's who I meant. He was great with knowing the best of the 13th Region over the years with the coaches Hall of Fame nominations.
He goes back pretty far, especially with the people he saw play before coaching.
#52
He will not do a top 10. He once did tell me the 5 who played the hardest for him. Sorry cant tell. Also he can recall all the way to 53, our 1st title.
#53
No one has mentioned my all-time favorite, Kevin Jackson. He was a three-year glory year starter (86, 87, 88) who did all the dirty work, was a tremendous rebounder and defender and could score when needed. Just worked his ass off every night, while the Farmers, Chadwell, even Box Head Rawlings were more well known. I'm not saying he was a top-five or ten all-timer, but I betcha he would be on Coach Keith's all-time team in some capacity.
#54
A couple more notable players to add to the Tiger list, Mark Smith and Mark Jason Smith.

Whoever Jackson guarded did not score. If I remember correctly he was married and living with his wife in a trailer while playing for Clay County.
#56
That's not uncommon Rojas. That's how we do it here in Clay Co!
#57
Now Bubba. I don't think that's common, even in Clay County.

I think I do remember an article about Jackson in the Lex Herald his senior year. It had a picture of him feeding his hogs before school. I can't imagine being married and living on my own whild still in high school.

Not today but it was before the 90's. I can list many people who have told me about getting the chickens eggs or "sloppin" the hogs before school. It just so happened he played basketball.
#59
Marty "Buck" Bowling was living with his gf during the season, and Kody Reed is dating a 23 yr old. I think Rice has got 5 acres and a new doublewide coming in after his performance in the postseason. McDaniel is the only sheltered, mamas boy of the guys that played this year. CC ain't about that.

I don't doubt that at all. What's surprising to me is being married while playing high school basketball. And, not even married and living with a parent but being married and living out on your own.
