1984 has to be in top 10. I wasn't around to see the teams in the 50's and 60's. Definitely a few of them that need to be considered. 2013 has been an amazing group and is up there amongst the top 10-15.

I wasn't around in the 50s and 60s either, at least not watching Clay County basketball.
The 84 team beat Bell in three overtimes, I think, in the regional finals and Bell beat Cawood in the last seconds in the first round. I think that team did win a game in the state tournament though.
I didn't think about 2013. I think it's a little early to rate them. They did look like a top 10 team Saturday though, I'll give you that.

One of my personal favorites was 1992. Shannon Hoskins, Mark Smith, Robert Marcum, Todd Messer, Todd Pridemore, and Chris Mckissic. Believe they lost a player to knee injury that year, think name was Robert Downey? Thought they could have won that year but lost to Lexington Catholic in semi finals. If I remember correctly Lexington Catholic lost in finals to University Heights. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

There was a time from the 60s through the very early 80s that the 13th region seldom won a game in the Sweet 16. I think at one time, early in Bobby Keith's career, Clay County had 8 or 9 consecutive losses in the Sweet 16.
I would put some of the other 80s or maybe the 1990 team ahead of the 2001 team. The 2001 team was pretty good for around here, but some of the other teams were ranked statewide.

You are correct. The University Heights/Lexington Catholic finals was the finals no one attended. The place was empty. Both teams had very low fan following and UK was playing Duke that night in the regional finals.

Sorry to dispute you guys, but if you think the 2013 Clay Co team is a top-10 Clay Co team, you haven't been watching 13th region basketball very long. Clay Co was one of the top 2 or 3 programs in the state at one time. The 2013 Clay Co team is not one of the top 20 teams in KY.

Personally, I would rank the '86 team around #5. They lost in the 1st round of the Sweet 16 to eventual champion Pulaski Co. who had an OUTSTANDING team that year. I don't know how we could have a top 10 without the '90 team that made it to the Final Four of the Sweet 16. Starting five that year was Lloyd Collins, Robert Marcum, Mark Smith, David Blair & Terry Gray. Lost to Louisville Fairdale on Sat. morning who went on to win back to back championships and may have had the most talented Sweet 16 team in the last 25 yrs. Also, there's no doubt the '92 team would've been the favorite had they not lost James Downey to the torn ACL. Here's my take on the top 10 teams:

Clay Co really started rolling on a state level in 1984. 1992 was the last of the great teams. At one point Clay Co lost 10 consecutive Sweet 16 games. That was from the 1/4 finals in 58 through 1981.
From 1961-1983 the 13th Region's Sweet 16 record was only 2-23. 1984-1996 were the glory years for the 13th region.

1991 was pretty darn good team too. They had a great season. They just ran into a buzz-saw in the 13th region semi-finals.

Sorry rojas but I'm going to have to disagree 100% on you with your statement that Clay is not in the top 20 teams of the state. Last time I checked they are in the final 16 and how many teams have won their last 15 straight?

Good point. They are indeed in the Sweet 16 and I hope they do well. However, I will stick by my opinion that they are not one of the 20 best teams in Kentucky. There are lots of teams, (Trinity, Bullet East, Henry Clay etc.) that are not in the Sweet 16 because they are in very tough regions. The 6th, 7th and 11th regional tournaments may be tougher than the Sweet 16. I would say there were at least 5 teams in the 11th that would have won the 13th. There are no teams in the 13th that would have won the 11th this year.

That is a valid point as well. Clay County did not play a team from those regions. I truly believed we would have beaten Catholic at home but they cancelled due to snow. The tournament in Florida would be no guarantee for Bullitt East, Madison Central, Ballard, Trinity, etc. I am glad we got some experience against a team full of high level athletes because if we beat Knott odds are we will be playing an extremely talented team.

Actually we did play Holy Cross Louisville but I'm not sure that should even count haha.

That's just too far back for me haha. I've heard a lot of people brag about that team and it definitely is the tallest CC team to take the floor with 6'11 Gilford and Hicks who was nearly 6'8.

Wow great question. 1991 definitely sticks out. 1983 was awfully talented as well. 2000, 2006, 2011 stick out too.

Like the list, but '04 was much better than '06 and '11. Mitchell, Jones, and Griffin made for a heckuva squad. Just went ice cold in the semis. '91 and '83 may be the best, but that '04 group has to be close.

Yes 2004 was a better group. I always felt if Griffin would have mixed it up inside more that he could have packed that team to Rupp. He was a freshman on the 01 team, the last to go to Rupp until this year. 1983 and 1991 are definitely the top 2 in my era.

Clay had a lot of teams in the past to represent the 13th well. This 2013 team ranks as the team to put CLAY Back On Top!
