Breathitt was zero threat for the region last year, despite what their record may
have been. PCC and KCC are certainly the faves this year, but BHS is competitive
and could sneak out a title with the right draw and a hot night. If I was betting I would
certainly pick PCC right now, but they have an advantage at every position over
Breathitt. Not saying it takes no coaching to coach those kids. I am a HUGE Hatcher
fan. But he had a MUCH better place to start from this year than Fugate did.
I actually looked at 2 seasons ago. Better turn around than I thought but needs a win over KCC or PCC.

14th Region
1. Al Holland, after all those boys quit we thought they would sink, but they are making a case to be #3 in the region.
2. Denny Fugate, great job year one.
Those are the only two I'd consider. Sorry Buckhorn is right where they should be IMO. I don't think they are a result of a great coaching job. Just saying.

Although Rowan & Ashland may have a more so-called "talented" team Webb is able to pull alot out of his players. .16th Region Jeremy Webb he gets the most out of his team and they have bought into the team concept. No egos just fundamentally sound and tough players without attitudes. Thacker has done a nice job and would be runnerup

Coach Humphrey has done a great job with his GRC team in the 10th.
Coach BB King of KCC would have to be mine in the 14th region, hasn't lost to a Ky team yet.
Coach Feldhaus of Madison Central in the 11th region. You know you've done something special when your 21-0 when your best players return next season.

WTH??????? You can appreciate the fact that he recruits???? Come on Willie I'd rather the award to go to Trevis Upchurch! He truly deserves the award he may not have the best record in the 12th or the best team...but by gosh he does the best with his HOME TOWN kids and does it well....He doesn't have to recruit. He is truely there for the kids.....Not out recruiting for the betterment of HIMSELF!!!

you are absolutly right about Coach Upchurch. He is a good coach and a great person.

8th region my pick is Jason Holland, Oldham County he
has the Colonels at 18-5 ... with only 2 returning starters.

I guess no one in the 15th region has a favorite coach. Junior Newsome at Betsy Layne has a record of 16-3 now. He has lost one regional game and is doing it with one returning starter from last year, He also won the 15th region all A title. Lost by 2 points at Frankfort on some very questionable no calls.

Rodney Woods, maybe Don Daniel in the 12th. Not many options really. I guess Wright maybe..

Please Willie I wouldnt give wright coach of the year for nothing. If other teams went out and recruited to feel the spots they need they would all win more games. What if Gover went out and got a big man that was comparable in talent as kapinga is for wright (tell me who would win that one). What are we even talking about wrights still not beat them and if they do it's not an honest win. I hate to say it but wright runs a dishonest program and he knows it. Not to mention has had a much easier schedule than most. Compare it to pc and pc is only one win behind them with a win over them on their home court. Nuff said. And I know two of my buddies are considering transferring from SW for that reason

12th Region Coach of the Year: Don Daniel (Somerset)
In my opinion, the Coach of the Year in the 12th Region should be Don Daniel. Last season, Somerset basically had one player and couldn't really do much with that. This year, the Briar Jumpers are making some noise in the region. Heck, tonight they took the #1 team in the region - Pulaski County - to overtime. He is my pick for the 12th Region Coach of the Year.
Some other coaches who deserve some praise:
Rodney Woods (Wayne County): After losing some of the top players in school history a year ago, Woods has the young Cardinals surpassing pre-season expectations. The Cards are currently #2 in the 48th District.
Al Gover (Pulaski County): One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He has the Maroons headed in the right direction as the #1 team in the 12th Region.
Steve Wright (Southwestern): Wright, who is in his first year at SW, has brought some excitement back to Warrior hoops. Look at the PC game for example, did you see how many people were at that game that night?

Denny Fugate - (Breathitt) Hands down, biggest team improvement. Great job for them this year.
Al Holland - (Close 2nd at Hazard) Done a great job with his sophomores this year.

The reason all the kids are so good at Hazard is because Happy took them all over the country to play while they were in grade school. I think Ol Happy deserves some credit. Not all to Al Holland. Those kids were good before they came to him. They should also thank Judge Executive Randy Thompson from KNOTT COUNTY for sending his kid to Hazard.

Yes those hundred game seasons while in 6th-8th grade definitely helped these guys, but Holland has definitely improved them since he got them the last 2 years. Coaching the game and teaching the game is a whole lot different. Just taking them to games and letting them play is nice, but some knowledge of the game is nice when teaching them what you want them to do. Just hope he sticks to being the new Mayor of Hazard and stays away from coaching the team, but don't look like that is going to happen from what I have heard lately.:devilflam

Please God let Mike Jones win it, just so I can enjoy the "who" chants as he walks onto the court at Rupp when they announce this.
15th region is Spurlock by far. He should finish the regular season with 24 or 25 wins and only a handful of losses.

Don't know what Hap may have done for them, but if you saw them in
December, and see them now, you'll call Holland a MIRACLE worker.
