It is a great story...on one side you have a team that has been there before with a rich football tradition. On the other side you have a team who is having its best season in school history with this game being their first state semi-final game.

Can't wait until kick-off this Friday night!!

Old school if you look over your shoulder friday night i think you'll see some Black & Gold from Boyle county cheering your Golden Lions on.

Not meant to impress... poster said he had not seen Belfry play so I figured I'd give him a look at a game.

Ramcat77 Wrote:There's a lot of chatter on here about Garrard being smallish and the big bad Belfry pirates being too big, bad and strong to handle, sounds similar to some of the chatter coming from the Russell fans leading up to that game...

What's the big deal with the size of the stadium? I think the size of the stadium and the close confines will only add to what is sure to be an electric atmosphere!! I've been to plenty of football games in recent years that where standing room only, two that come to mind are a Russell/Breathitt game @ Breathitt a few years back, that game was standing room only, four and five rows deep in some places. Another game involves Russell @ Russell and I want to say the opponent was Belfry, but I could be mistaken, anyway, that game was also standing room only, several rows deep in some places and in both cases I say the close confines of the standing room only crowd in relationship to the field was a major factor in the outcome of the game. I'm going to this game, hoping to find a seat, but I'll be prepared to stand the entire game if need be, cause it's sure to be one heck of a slobber knocker!! :redboxer:

i wouldnt compare Russell to Belfry, they have went opposite directions the last few yrs..
Garrard does shave Russell colors though
Belfry=28
Garrard=14

Go Big Red!

The Rebel nation will be there Friday to support our Golden Lion friends. I wonder if the kids that defected to Danville wished they had stayed at Garrard? Just wondering.:eyeroll:

Thanks for the support, French For President!! Hey, anybody there to support the Golden Lions on Friday night are honorary Golden Lions for the night...no matter what school they are from! The more people we have there to support Garrard the better!!

You know, the topic of the defectors has come up a few times in the past few days......All I have to say about that is that I wish them the very best at where they are at right now.
Belfry - 34
Garrard - 14

GO BIG RED!
Hope all the local teams can come out and support Garrard Friday... Those players that
left was there last Friday showing support for GC... They are young men that made a
decision that they felt was best for them. We all wish them the best and look forward
to seeing them on the field next year....
Belfry wins state this year
If Garrard Co. would have played Danville later in the season,GC would have won as this team got better as the season went along.I think GC can beat Belfry. Should be a great game.Good luck to both teams.
Coach Haywood and the Belfry Pirates roll into Lancaster 12-1 and head out towards Bowling Green 13-1 for another shot at a 3A State Championship.

Go Big Red!!!!

Garrard has had a very good season and everyone associated with the school should be proud but, their train is going to be derailed on Friday as they will face a Belfry team that is on a different level from all the teams that they have faced this season. I am not trying to take anything away from Garrard but, when the 2nd half rolls around, I think that Garrard will already be worn out and Belfry will win by a minimum of 3 TDs!

Belfry - 42

Garrard Co. - 14

LOSERS QUIT WHEN THEY'RE TIRED, WINNERS QUIT WHEN THEY HAVE WON
I really hope Garrard enjoys this ride. I predicted BHS-34-14 win, this game could go either way. Garrard could pull off the upset, but i hope not. Cause if Belfry wins, they will be in the same boat as GHS is in this week next week. And I along with all pirate fans will be thinking we can only pull off a great upset of our on against them Bees from Lou. Thats what makes high school football so much fun.Good Luck.
We are behind you all the way....GO BELFRY GO!!!!

You don't think Boyle County brought more fans there the last time they played?
(note: the use of 'Your' in this post is to represent any Belfry opponent and not GC as I have not seen them play)

Hopefully the winner of this game comes out of it healthy. It's late in the season, the ground is getting colder and harder. The hits are getting more fierce as the prize gets closer. If either team wants a shot to hang with Louisville Central then they need all their players healthy.

I expect a good game, GC has the task of defeating a team on a mission. The winner of this game will have the right to call themselves the best team in Eastern Kentucky, a title Belfry is currently defending and wishing to shed for State Champ. Garrard is playing the role of underdog, with heart (from what I see from their fans) it's a great story and can't wait for Friday.

Now. Belfry has a monster "D" and bruising "O". They will hurt a team with lack of depth by wearing you down over four quarters while throwing 4, 5 or 6 different backs at you. Belfry plays like a battering ram, pound, pound, and pound some more. You get deep into the third quarter and the Pirates really start to pick up steam.

Teams and fans feel like they have Belfry under control when they hold the Pirates in the first half (holding can be to a td or two). The Pirates can hurt a team without scoring, they like to drive the ball, pound it into your line. Move the chains a few times and if you happen to get the ball back without the Pirates scoring, don't count it as a victory of your game plan. Truth is that 5+ minute drive that the Pirates beat on you with multiple fresh backs is designed to bring you down, get you breathing harder. Praying for your offense to get a shot. Then when they do the defense comes in and lays some very hard hits to continue to emotional and physical beatdown that they inflict so they can control the second half.

The Pirates play two types of football well. The first is total domination (ex. Our entire district) or grind it out until the other team is out of it (Prestonsburg and Breathitt).

Two keys to beating Belfry.
1.) You win the toss. Make Haywood take the opening kickoff, the Pirates love having the ball to start the second half and will hurt you if you let them have a long 2nd quarter drive followed by the ball to start the half.

2.) Score quick and score often. You want to beat Belfry, you need to get the point difference so much in your advantage that you take Pond Creek Nation out of the game. You get up by 14-17 points and you will see the atmosphere on the BHS sideline go from frenzied cheering to intent watching, the Pirate fans love this team and when they get down it becomes about watching the teams every execution and they forget to cheer. Take them out of it and the team starts to feel it.

(sorry for the ramble, I am excited about turkey tomorrow, the Pirates on Friday and I just generally don't want to work today, so you guys get my ramble)
I'm gonna take Garrard 35 to 28.the only game i've seen Belfry play was against Henry clay on ihigh, and after watching that game i defintely think Garrard can play with Belfry.I know you guys say Belfry has as much speed as Garrard and they may have, but the only Mountain team that i've seen with great team speed year in and year out is Bell county.all the other mountain teams Boyle has played over the years didn't have the speed they thought they had.in no way is this meant as an insult to eastern kentucky football.thier have been some great teams come out of the mountains over the years.I maybe wrong about Belfry's speed i guess i'll find out friday.I just wasn't that impressed with Belfry against a weak Henry clay team.I wish i could have found more video of Belfry to have watched.good luck to both teams i hope for no injuries on either team.who ever wins i'll cheer for against Central.

I take that as a compliment. Seeing as how Boyle and Belfry have never met and Bell's success over the past decade doesn't come close to what Belfry has done (2 State Titles, 2 State Runner-Ups, and 7 State Semi-Finals).

Putting the bias aside I don't think this particular Belfry team is as good as Bell or Boyle were the past two seasons, in fact I think they would be a couple TD underdogs to each. Next season though, look out! On that same note, the past two Bell teams were not on the same level as the 2003 and 2004 Belfry teams, and IMHO the 2007 Belfry team would have defeated them or at least been even with them as well.
know1 Wrote:You don't think Boyle County brought more fans there the last time they played?
Boyle definitely had a large crowd, and I suspect that the one from Belfry will be just as
large. I am just anticipating that it will be larger...
The Pond Creek Nation travels well! They will bring a ton of fans. Belfry rolls in this one, 40-12.

Wish you could see a different game as well. This Henry Clay game was week 2 of the season. During what I consider our most vulnerable time of the year (games 2 and 3). Ashland would be the game to showcase our defense and defensive speed. Breathitt showcases our resolve and pound it out mentality, Prestonsburg also showcases the Pirate resolve. Pikeville shows the damage we can do in a hurry without an offensive TD (2nd half explosion). Lots of games would be better to watch, unfortunately the only games that get televised on WYMT.com are not archived for future use or download (me thinks WYMT to should look into some cheap web hosting).

On a side note it appears GC is the 2nd highest scoring team Belfry will face this season (Breathitt being #1) Befry appears to the highest scoring team GC will face this season. So according to the stats both teams CAN score. The biggest difference I see is that GC allows the most points on D of the 4 remaining teams. Belfry on the other hand has the best D (according to points allowed) left in the tourney ( we all know these numbers don't matter once it comes to Central) The Pirates put up 28 on a Breathitt team that was allowing only 11 pts a game and had a stellar points allowed going up against Belfry with 131. (159 after)

Some numbers breakdown for thought

Pts Scored
Belfry 41 (avg)
Garrard 42 (avg)
+1 Garrad

Pts Allowed
Belfry 13 (avg)
Garrard 19 (avg)
+6 Belfry

Garrard Schedule info
4 OT Win against 1 win Clay County (but it was week 1)
1 Shutout - Scoring 38 against Llyod Memorial
4 opponents less than 10 scored
6 Teams scored 20 plus on them
30+ points scored 12 times.
35+ points scored 12 times.
40+ points scored 7 times
50 + scored 4 times

Garrard opponents had a record of 77 - 85
Russell and Powell were decent playoff opponents but really mid tier 3A teams.

Belfry Schedule info
7-6 battle against Ashland. Could have been 14-6 if not for the knee by Belfry.
2 Shutouts - Scoring 54 and 55 against East Ridge and Jackson Co respectively
5 opponents scored less than 10
4 teams scored 20 plus on them
30+ Scored 9x
35+ points scored 8 times
40+ scored 8 times
50+ scored 5 times
Belfry opponents had a record of 83 - 81
Breathitt Co was the game in up until now. Also likely the best game in the East thus far.

Numbers wise?
Belfry and Garrard can both score points and score them big.
Belfry has about a 1 TD advantage defensively against Garrard.
Befry has a the SoS advantage (moot this time of year but it's there)

Much like the state title is Central's to lose, this game is Belfry's to lose. I think the advantage here is the Belfry defense. Both close games I see on GC's schedule ended in favor of GC in overtime and to teams both on opposite ends of the spectrum. 4 OT win against terrible Clay team and against a good record Bourbon team( though their schedule is filled with weak teams). If GC wants to win this it can't be close, they won't win a trench close scoring game with Belfy, they have to score lots of points and if the stats are any indication they have to outscore Belfry because the Golden Lion D is not up for the Pirates offense.

My final score prediction

Belfry 34
Garrard 17
