He would be on my list also. He was a hell of a high school back. Did he go play anywhere in college? I seem to remember him being somewhat undersized.

Hatz Wrote:Best ones I saw or played against:

Chris Jones, Danville, 1977. All American. Led Freshmen rushers in SEC in '78 while at UK. Blew his knee out in 2nd game or so of Sophomore year and never played again.

I saw Chris Jones play his senior year at Danville when I was about 12 years old, and I was thoroughly impressed. Still the most formidable combination of size and speed I've ever seen on a high school field.

Pete Venable from Somerset was very similar to Jones, and they even started together in the same backfield for UK for a season, I think.

The best I ever tried (hopelessly) to tackle myself were James Fletcher ('83) from Somerset and Brian Williams ('81) from Middlesboro.

Best one I've played against period: Javon Ringer, Chaminade Julienne (Dayton, OH) :HitWall: :HitWall: :HitWall:

I think Venable and Jones did play together that one year.

James Fletcher looked like a stud when he was at Wayne County in '82. When he went to Somerset he looked and played even better with the talent around him.

Brian Williams was a great athlete when I saw him play at UK.

Al Baker - Trigg County.
#43
Jaun Thomas of Ashland played against him in high school. The dude was a beast hit me so hard I still feel it 20 plus years later! Confusednicker:

As much as it kills me to admit it, playing against Rees McShara for two years has me sold on him being one of the best. Also, Shane Israel from LexCath.
#45
Melvin Miles, led Conner to a state championship in 1983. Beat my Dixie team single-handedly for the district title. Speed kills.
#46
Shawn Alexander......Alabama
#47
Best ive played against would have to be:
-Dominique Hayden (LCA)
-Channing Fugate (Breathitt Co.)

Chris Jennings who transferred into Fairview for his final two years and went on to play for the Arizona Wildcats and then sparingly for the Cleveland Browns. I was just a freshman when he trucked me and left a cleat mark on my chest.
#50
channing fugate! big strong athletic fast had great size at 6'3 240
#51
Mark Higgs from Owensboro was the best I ever saw
#52
Doug Howard
Pburg did well defending Jones that year, but couldnt do anything with Howard.

On a side note, I know its not suppose to be your own team but I have to: Seth Hyden from 90's Pburg, no one in the state could stop him.
#53
Channing Fugate, Derek Homer, and J.J. Jude.

In '83 I went to camp at Uk and roomed next to Mark Higgs and I must say he was as advertised. There was another highly touted back there that year and his name was Pierre Francis. He was a great back but I never heard much else about him after that year. I was at Union College one season until I blew my knee out "again" and practiced with James Fletcher. He was a great back, big and hard nosed. Also, I played with a back at Harlan by the name of Duncan Jacobs. He was the best back I ever played with. He held the state long jump record for a few years. He was a 4.5 or less and hit the gap in the line at top speed. I've not seen to many that had the guts or the legs to do that.

Chris jennings -fairview eagles- ny jets

Back in the day, Don Gullett @ McKell and Charlie Bill Owens @ Mt. Sterling.

I was at that UK camp, too. Forgot about Pierre Francis.

Unrelated, but a funny memory about that camp is Jerry Claiborne (who stood about 5' 6") standing in front of me and pointing up at my chin telling me I wasn't big enough to play in the SEC. I said "I'm scrappy like you, coach." I think he smiled a little at one corner of his mouth.

Fugate-Breathitt Co.

1.Greg Hackney--87' Pikeville team

potlimit2002 Wrote:Joey Couch, he was faster than JJ Jude and probably 60 lbs heavier. He is probably the best all around football player to come out of the Moutains. He was the lightest man since 1965 to best First team ALL-SEC DT. My second pick would be Tony Mays, he was the fastest Mountain player I ever saw bar none!

Couch was good but he was nowhere near as fast as Jude, not even close.
