SL was 4-7 and 0-10
4-17.
2009 they lost 2 games by about 5 total points.
Last season they were extremely close as well almost winning 3-5 games.
If you know of a transfer report it, since that is illegal for athletic purposes.
close only counts in horseshoes not football, bottom line SL football is as low as it gets and here this Harlan fan is trying to tell us how good our coach is:please:

Hypothetically speaking here.... What if SL and NL formed a conglomerate team? Would the combo help pick up a few more W's? Or is there too much rivalry between these two teams for it to ever happen?

Take my post anyway you want to but I was just stating facts. It isn't fair that someone can get on here and falsly report things and then judge me when I was just setting the record straight. Remember I'm also not the one that is getting on here and asking for a witch hunt on the coach.
If you don't like my facts then report some yourself so a decent conversation can take place instead of a bunch of opinions.

Always the witch hunters out there that don't know what they are talking about. In my opinion, the SL coaches do a great job with what they have to deal with.

You may be a great guy and a great coach...but you had better sell that to the kids or problems. A concern that not many have talked about is SL has always had numbers....I remember when we had 80 to 90 kids....not to long ago....we finished the year with 23 kids dressed at home. That is a concern ..I don't care who is coaching.

At some point you have got to be competitive and have a winning season. I would like to see this sorry administration put football back on the map, the way it was when I played. Welch was 5-26 his last three years at North and 4-17 at South and I could not find that he ever had a winning season a total of 9-43 just don't get it. Call me a witch hunter if you want but I don't know of any school around that wouldn't be making a change if they really cared about football. I would like to think that I know a little about football and a whole lot about winning to except the current condition of South Laurels program. I ask you if your job was to get SL football back on track and your job depended on making a winning team would you keep the same coach? I personally like most everybody on the staff and coach Welch, but business is business and in high school football anything below 50% winning is not acceptable.

I agree. Welch should have never been hired in the first place.
That was a hire obviously about who you know. South is the largest school in the WYMT area or mountains, which ever, and yet cant beat 1a and 2a teams because they cant get this kids out.
Welch did an awful job while at north and is continuing to do so at south. I wouldnt be surprised to see a 3-7 year or worse again this year.
south could have easily gotten a good coach. Its one of the best jobs around southeastern ky with location and such but everyone around london knows its all about the politics and will continue to be.

That is 800/900 kids away from 2,000.
NL beat the Region Champion last year (2009), went into 2 OT with Harlan County, beat Knox Central, South Laurel, dismantled Clay County and a very hot Williamsburg team. They are doing what it takes, they lost a lot of upperclassment but played a lot of young kids last year mostly 9th and 11th graders.
South is actually a bigger school than North. It was a couple of years ago anyways because back when it was 4 classes, In the 4a mountain district South was the biggest, then Whitley, then North.
Could have changed though i suppose.

NL is the bigger school by a few hundred kids.
People also forget that Coach Welch went 8-4 at Laurel County before the merger.
There are so many inacuracies in this thread, a lot of assumptions being made.

Youre right, North is now bigger than South, but not by a few hundred kids.
It was really close North-1381 South-1322

Just exactly what does SL have coming back. Should they be better? Who are their better players?
02-25-2011, 08:39 AM
That is the concern 23 kids dressed...couple hurt 25..out of that 10 or so seniors. You tell me what is coming back? Our 8th grade is talking of leaving for Corbin. I have no idea who is going to be out there.
02-25-2011, 08:44 AM
who does SL scrimmage this year?

SL will be in good shape and their numbers will be back up . SL is about to turn a corner with some exciting football. I just have talked to a few people that have some good info. We will see if it happens. Rumor are considered Rumors until proven otherwise.

Numbers don't make a team but it helps.

Are they bringing back the Tony Franklin system? Or are they getting new coaches?
02-25-2011, 02:26 PM
Heard today that there might actually be a new quarterbacks coach coming to south if there is a job that opens up.
02-25-2011, 02:42 PM
Where is he supposed to be from?
Just how many kids are out for football right now. I have seen about 45 at rockcastle, 50 at whitley, 40 at Lincoln, 40 at garrard. I travel too much by the way.

The guy I talked to said LCA but you know how rumors are, LCA completed a lower percentage of passes than SL last year so who knows.
02-25-2011, 05:55 PM
The stats on khsaa or incorrect, if thats where you got them. I do know this for a fact. I have the stats from a WAZOO broadcast. He was at 51% for the year with 2300 hundred yards passing and 1200 rushing. He had 25 td with 11 rushing td's. . 7 ints.. . Boggs threw 20 int for 3 td and was 34%. Big difference on the product on the field and with the coach. From what I have heard, no on the franklin system. I only hear news about SL when I talk to one guy over there at SL.
02-25-2011, 06:20 PM
They would have been better off starting the younger kid at QB at south this year. So what's the word is south bringing in a QB coach? or is this just a rumor? Anybody know anything about the guy? what's his name and where he's coached in the past?
02-25-2011, 06:36 PM
I know for a fact that the LCA quarterback threw for 25 TDs and rushed for 11 TDs and only threw 7 INTs all year. I don't know his completion percentage, but I will take those numbers all day long while going to the regional finals!
On the new coach speculation, I have it on good authority that SL is getting a facelift on Offense including a new Offensive Coordinator, QB Coach, RB Coach and O-Line Coach. ****, they are even getting a new waterboy! LOL I don't know if the guy is coming from LCA, but some serious changes are needed to bring SL back to respectability and help keep the Defense off the field.
While they are at it, a new mascot might be in order, as Cardinals make folks in Wildcat Country see red.

If the new OC is who I think they might hire, the kids will love him. He is very innovative and knows the game and how to win. He has a good rapport with kids and offers a fresh, fun approach to the game that will get more kids involved and enjoying football again. :Hungry:
02-25-2011, 11:33 PM
There is only speculation of a QB coach from LCA that I am aware of. Administration doesn't care enough to bring in a whole staff especially if those guys want teaching jobs.
02-26-2011, 12:09 AM
I know both North and South Laurel have both scheduled Lynn Camp this year.
02-26-2011, 01:13 PM
I can verify, it won't be a QB coach, it will be an OC who also coaches QBs. :Cheerlead
02-26-2011, 02:33 PM
makes ya wonder how you have soooo much information on this new coach and the situations at SL... hh: But if he's as good as you say then I am all for it. Will Powenski be let go or his responsibility changed?
02-27-2011, 12:02 AM
Let's just say I know people. Powenski may as well pack his bags. :yawn:leep:
