How good is Patrick Towles?

Bob Seger Wrote:Was he at Paintsville for the JC game?

I am assuming that security is beefed up quite a bit.. Dont mean to sound like an awe struck teenager, but I was a huge fan of him as a player and I certainly respect his representation of Kentucky in DC.

No, they don't have any beefed up security. He' s just one of us.

I think Senator Bunning enjoys being a grandfather at the games. Man you guys could have gotten a bunch of baseballs signed.

sstack, tradition, and NCC41. Thanks for the comments. I have enjoyed this mini discussion, (still would like to know why Patrick doesn't play baseball though) and good luck to you guys this week. Should be 20n10 for ya'll.

He certainly has reason to be proud. Think you could get one of those signed for me, and FedEx it?

Both Towels and Pike are in the shotgun a lot and just about everyone in college is going to that spread type of offense. Both of them can tuck it and get you tough yards although I think Pike is more likely to punish a defender ala Jared who I played against and was agile. I think Dixie has a bigger playbook and Pike makes a lot more different type of throws, but Highalnds runs a better offense that suits the type of athletes that they have and Towels does a good job of getting his receivers the ball most of the time when they are in stride. I think Towels has the arm strength to make all the throws necessary to succeed at the next level but doesn't get to show it in Highlands offense.

Basically I can't sit here and say that Pike is better than Towels or the other way around. The only people who will have some type of bias.

To answer the question posted in the thread title: Towles is very, very good. In my opinion he's carried Highlands O this year as a result of other players being banged up. He's not only very talented, he's a great leader, has an intense desire to win, is a team player and is an extremely nice young man. Pike may be as athletically talented as Towles, but I wouldn't trade Towles for Pike in a million years.

PS: I love Jared, one of my favorite Highlands and UK players, but there is no way that Jared was a mobile as Towles; bigger arm-yes; able to swat defenders away better-yes; more mobile-no.

Stardust Wrote:Patrick has all of the intangibles. Would he make a solid D1 QB, I'm not too sure about that. He's not as good as Lorenzon or Guidugli (sic) were in HS, but he does have good upside. With a lack of experience, it's too hard to tell at this juncture.

I'll respectfully disagree about Towles not being as good as Lorenzen and Guidugli. I think he is. There is a big, big difference in talent on Lorenzen's and Guiduigli's teams and what Towles has this year, and I'll leave it at that.

Jared played some point guard for Highlands as a jr and sr. We had their pass game in check in 98 so what does Jared do. He and Brian Ulbrict go for over 120 rushing. He is not on the same level as Gino or Jared. And Jared and Gino's teams are better than anything they have put out since then and it's not close.

Yeah, too bad Lorenzen wasn't even the best QB in Kentucky that year, Kyle Moore was by far the better player, not that I didn't like Lorenzen, cheered for him while he played at UK, but he should've been second string behind Mr. Moore.

Jared Was the best player in the state period. The second best quarterback was at Louisville Male that season.

Yeah, Moore proved he was better. Cmon. If Moore was better he would have played. How much time did he spend in the NFL? Was he ever heard from again after high school. It's easy to run up inflated stats playing against little, bad teams.

Senator or soon to be X-Senator BUNNING IS OLD NEWS (thankfully). The boy has the physical tools, size, speed and arm to make it as a D-1 QB, but he is still green. Lorenzen has to help a great deal. He was a back-up as a freshman and made great strides the past 2 years. Good luck Patrick !

I recall him playing safety as a freshman. Can't remember if he played much QB as a frosh.

The kid can play, does not look very fast but for some reason nobody is catching him. He sits in the pocket and looks over his check downs and hits the open receiver also hits the timing passes very well for this stage in his career. I wish the kid well and hope he chooses the right program that fits his gifts. Good luck to Towles in the state and next year.

Agreed. I didn't mean he didn't play at all but I believe he was the 2nd team QB as Carter New was the starter at QB.

jared wasn't even the best player on the team, do you remember that guy derrick

sorry to burst your bubble but breathitt was ranked higher than highlands that year and who exactly did they play that was so awesome? hey, it's football, size matters to scouts, ability don't mean a thing apparently
#48
First we shut Derick down not once but twice their senior year, we being Dixie Heights. I'm talking not 1 catch in two games and knocked him out of the first game. Second if anyone besided Jared was their best player, that would have been Brian Ulbrict. Last Highlands was wire to wire ranked number 1 in the state of Kentucky followed by Louisville Male. Brethitt County would not have made the playoffs in our district.
#49
They didn't have to pass against Dixie that year. When you're ripping off 20 yards a run, why pass? Your team lost by 50 pts and you're happy that Smith only caught 1 ball? He obviously wasn't needed that game.
#50
You better do some reseasrch wideleft instead of throwing your normal wrong blind comments out there. They didn't come close to scoring 50 points against us let alone beat us by 50. We gave every team the blue print on how to defend that team. We had Jared arguing with coaches at half the first game when it was 7 to 7 at the half. And in the playoffs it was a battle and if you know Jared you can ask him about it.
#51
Also they couldn't throw the ball on us becasue of blanket coverage and we also shut down Noah Gibson. Brian Ulbrict played like a man.
#52
Maybe the thread should be changed to,"How good was Brian Ulbrict"?

I looked up the two games. It was 41- 7 and 34-10. A combined 75-17 beatdown of Dixie. Sounds like your defense was less than stellar. Maybe you got hit so hard in the first series of plays, that you only remember the game when it was in the first or second series of the first quarter.

If teams you gave the blue prints to (on how to defend the birds) used them, then that explains why the birds beat them all. 41-7 and 34-10 are not what I would call a beat down.
#55
It might not be a beatdown. But, it wasn't exactly competitive either.

Wideleft01 Wrote:It might not be a beatdown. But, it wasn't exactly competitive either.

I meant it was not a beat down by Dixie like he was trying to make it sound like. This was clearly was not competitive games.

Maybe everyone should stick to the thread or start another one.

Towles is good.

Time will tell... he has all the potential to be a very good QB and has another year to work on his footwork and throwing motion. I think he is more moblie than the other QB's mentioned but no one in high school football has a stronger arm than Lorenzen had (that I have seen). I still think if Bardo stays healthy last year he would of been one of the best to come out of Highlands ever!!!

Has the potential to be a very good QB? I think he lead the team as a soph, off the bench, to a championship, and took the team on his shoulders this year back to the title game (and hopefully another title). I think he has already proved to be a very good QB. The kid is only going to get better.
