Should Billy Gillespie have pulled Jodie Meeks when he was breaking Issel's scoring record? No. The same situation applies. If the record is in sight, capture it. They come once in a lifetime and it will be something to remember for the rest of your days. During the 2008-2009 season, Johnson Central could have broken the state rushing record against Woodford County, but didn't because Matney didn't know that we were close to the record.

I hope I have not offended anyone with my earlier post. That is certainly not my intention. I have the utmost respect for JJ and his family! What he did was a phenominal feat for any situation! I had only asked about the way the game was coached because I was hoping to get a definate "NO"! JJ is a pleasure to watch in any sport he plays! Nobody I have talked to saw the game. So it was all hearsay. once again....a HUGE congrats to Mr. J.J. Jude!

pureathlete Wrote:Monster man. No any coach wouldn't do this. If Bell County would leave Cory
Davenport in most games he would break state record every friday. And that goes the same for most of our backs. I am sure if they had the touches that Mr. Jude gets they would break the state record. But at Bell County we are focused on winning games, not breaking state records. We are more of a team rather than a great player.
There is no doubt in anyone's mine that JJ is a tremendous athlete and a great running back. Scary thing is the fact that he is only a Junior. He will be returning next year for Coach Matney. You also bring up the fact that JJ is tremendous wrestler for Coach Matney on his wrestling team. Which blows my mind even more in the fact that he would leave his star running back and best player and a great wrestler on his wrestling team in a game for the selfish reason of breaking a record. I do applaud JJ on his effort and yes he does deserve a reward and accomplishment for his achievements. But this reward should not come in a slop game, against a less than average team. When your team is up by 40+ at half time and you already have 300 yards it is time to call it a night, which is what most coaches with class do. Take coach hilton for example we were up big at halftime and he let every starter, both offense and defense leave their helmets and shoulder pads in the locker room.
Congratulations, but he does make a valid point. This is why records in football are ridiculous. This record is as ridiculous as Highlands scheduling weak teams to break the win record. Just play the game for cryin' out loud!

I have no problem with what Matney did. Records don't come around often and that record is a memory that Jude will have forever regardless of how any of you feel about the way he got it. Congratulations to JJ.

J.J. is a great kid and one of the hardest working competitors I have ever seen. I am so happy for him.

So does anyone know who holds the single game passing record? Does anyone know who his coach was? I am not sure but I do know at one time it was SC's Jesse Watts.

Congrats to Jude, I'm sure with an effort like this against Woodford County college coaches will beating down Coach Matney's door.

Are you trying to make a point? My brother played on that team and it was............Matney!!!!

This is a joke to let a kid break a record in a blow-out. Why didn't he let him break this record against Knox Central or Bell Co. How many yards did he have against These two teams. This is no class This coach must be a stat man
10-18-2010, 08:50 AM
I would like to hear from the coach. If he will be honest. Did he in fact manipulate the score to avoid the running clock and did he concur with letting the opponenet score to gain one more posession? If so, then he would be ok with allowing an asterisk beside the record stating the facts. No disprespect to the player, have seen him play and he is one of the top backs in the state with or without the record. Hope his career in football is long lasting.

Yes I am trying to make a point. Watts had an awesome game, didn't get hurt, and now has memories for the rest of his life. Its quite a gift a coach can give a young man. I don't understand why anyone would think bad of the coach for setting records.

Jesse Watts of Sheldon Clark
651 yards vs. Allen Central in 1991.
http://www.khsaa.org/records/football/st...ecords.pdf
FWIW, Allen Central was 0-10 in '91.
Woodford County is 1-7.
The previous rushing/game champion was Monquantae Gibson of Louisville Moore. He set his mark vs. an 0-10 Shawnee.
Anyone seeing a pattern?
On a serious note: I do applaude the Jude kid for his efforts and his spectacular night. He is the real deal and a great RB.

As with the example I gave about Dan Issel. No body ever criticized Rupp for making Issel the all time scoring record holder.

I believe I read where the Lexington Herald gave total as being 584 yards. Anybody know what the official number actually is?

Sorry but I think this record is nothing special as many others have stated. The kid played hard as he should but records are meant to showcase exceptional efforts against competitive opponents and this was not the case here.
Any of 20-30 other current RB in the state could have accomplished this on many occasions and the fact that the coach allowed a team to score uncontested in order to allow this to happen makes this record tainted.
Also, I heard that the player and coach are related so that at least explains why the coach would go to such extreme measures to do this but if I was the kid I'm not sure I'd want the record knowing the way in which it was obtained.
As far as I'm concerned, this coach isn't fit to lead high school kids with this obvious lack of character and sportsmanship that he displayed!:booo:

And if the game was well in hand and he was played more to get the record than this coach has a problem too!

Congrats to the RB JJ, great effort! AS for the coach, this is totally classless. If anyone doubts the extreme measures the coach went to then watch the replay, it's on the web. JC actually let WC score to get the ball back to allow this. The choices having starters in and letting an opponet score is classless. Earlier this year I watched Mayfield score on it's first 6 offensive plays and on 7 of their first 8. They then had a first quarter running clock and pulled the starters. Mayfield could have easily set that record earlier this year against a team that they out manned easily. They did the right thing and called off the dogs. I guarentee that this is just one example out of many where the record could be broke but others took higher ground. You guys taking up for the actions are acting no different.

How do you know 20-30 kids could do it? Thats garbage. Records are kept to be broken and thats it. If any kid can set records then they have a chance to prove it every Friday. Let them do it.

Not everyone see's things the way you do.
I do think if coaches wanted their players to break records on lesser opponents, then they could probably do it. Everyone has a cupcake game on their schedule, whether that be a district opponent or a non-district opponent.

Let me make sure I understand your post? If we challenge the truth of your post we are being classless. You must be related to Obama.
JC did not allow WC to score. If you watch the play a freshman kicker picked up his tee and runs off the field to the wrong side. WC had their 1st team kick return team in against JC all freshmen. That was why they scored.
The part about going for the state rushing record, not sure if I would have did that due to fear of injury and respect for the other team. However, situation like setting a state record does not happen very often and the emotion of the situation would be difficult to resist.

Because this kid is nowhere to be found on the D1 recruiting scene so if he was that great of a talent, he'd already have several offers and everyone in the state would know who he is. Do it in a close game and I'll take my hat off to the kid. If it's a matter of running for over 500 yards, he could also join the cross country team and do that every weekend!
This just minimizes what the record stands for as it doesn't appear to be achieved in the spririt of competion, rather in a contrived situation!
I'll be much more impressed if he can gain over 100 yards if his team gets to play Highlands in the playoffs!
Point is, the kid is not at fault as he only did his job and we'll never know if others could replicate this because their head coaches won't allow them to humiliate an obviously beaten opponent!
10-18-2010, 01:58 PM
JJ needs to be applauded not persecuted, he is a great kid. He deserves it. As to being recruited I would say this will open some eyes. As to being related to the coach, he is not. Matney was also the coach of the passer that holds the state record.

For me, this hits the nail on the head.

It really is crazy that a lot of people thinks bad of matney letting one of his kids get a record. No matter the opponent he got it and so did the QB from the '91 team. So we have people thinking bad about him....uh im sure with some of the teams that we had in the late 90's-early 2000's at Sheldon Clark we could've broke alot more records. These are only 2 records out of many and what about all the other coaches out there are they crap too?
10-18-2010, 02:20 PM
I don't think anyone is taking anything away from a great person in JJ. He's a great kid, a great athlete, but many disagree with how Matney handled the game.

I see that your on this site as well toothpick. What game was it that you watched your beloved Mayfield on seven of their first eight possesions and then "call of the dogs"? You just posted the same thing on preps but you included the team but why not over here? The team that you showed so much mercy to was tiny little Fulton County. You showed so much mercy and called of the dogs but you still managed to outscore them 75 to 6. What a complete joke to rip Johnson Central while your team is putting up 75 points on an extremely outmanned Fulton County squad. The point differential in the JC/WC game was 32 points while the point differential in the Mayfield/Fulton County game was a whopping 69 point difference. This isn't the first time your sacred Cards have put up 70 points either. Wow such a hypocritical post.
