I mentioned him, but to me he wasn't as good as Howard, Jones, Coleman, Robbins, or Renfro.

Actually, I thought he was the 2nd best runner on his team (Dontae Wright).

Also saw him head to head against Barret Rogers and Howard (Howard was a freshman). I'd take either Rogers or Howard, as a freshman, over West.

Granted I only saw a handful of games, but thats what I saw.

He wasn't as good, you have got to be pretty good to be the second best rusher in KHSAA history. Doug is the leading rusher at Belfry and that is all anyone can say about it. He didn't come no where close to 7,000 yards. I was hoping that West would end up at my alma mater, but he decided to go to Marshall. As a freshman Howard nor Rogers had 2,000 yards like West. Dontae was an option QB his senior year, and that is why he was dangerous. The majority of Howard's yards came against sub-par competition i.e. Pike Central, Shelby Valley, Magoffin Co, Sheldon Clark, East Ridge. West played tougher competition throughout his high school career. He was quicker, and more elusive than Howard. Both backs could run over you, but I know where you are coming from and why you see Howard as the best. If you sit back and actually watch the kids whole career you can understand why I pick West as being much greater than either Rogers and Howard.

Johnny Lash- Leslie Co.
Shamar Beatty- Hazard
The razor kid from Breathitt Co.
Jonah Caudill- Belfry
#35
West's Sophomore year he rushed for 2,400 yards, AND he didn't even become the starter til the 4th game of the year. He had over 300 yards rushing against Bell County when Bell was one of the top rush defenses in the state. Had Chuke Williams have been at Lawrence for West's Senior year he would have easily broke the state record and be the States "All Time Leading Rusher". Not taking ANYTHING away from Doug, I LOVED watching him run the ball, but facts are facts, I would say that Doug is the 2nd best running back I have seen in the last 10 years though, Wet being first.

1. Doug Howard- He is the best back I have saw from the mountains
2. Mike West- Played for Lawrence County
3. Shawn Robbins- Played for Bell County
4. Jonathon Chapman- Played for Breathitt County/Few games for Pikeville
5. Jonah Caudill/David Jones- both great Belfry Rb's
6. Barret Rogers/Paul Sullivan- both great Pikeville Rb's
7. Michael Fannin/Joe Blackburn-both great Pburg Rb's
8. Durrel White- Played for Middlesboro
9. Dusty Hall- Played for Shelby Valley
10.Jared Frasure, Robert Shurtleff, Gary Childers, and there was a big guy from M iddlesboro but I do not remember his name. I thought I would throw out some of the guys who didn't get much attention, but were great Rb/Fb's

Shurtleff wasnt that good now. We left out Micah Caudill. He was one of the best becuz he setthe record in only 2 years at belfry.

Micah played all 4 years of high school at Belfry and had more carries for a career than Howard.

I thought he played 3 years and was injured his sophomore year.

Who did Lawrence Co. play that would make you think West played against tougher competition?

West is not the 2nd leading rusher in KHSAA history, but 7,000 yards is a lot. I never said it wasn't. Howard finished with 5,300 and a State Finals rushing record 278 yards. You're right, thats not impressive at all.

I saw West 5 times, Rogers about 10, and Howard plenty of times. And not one time did I think West was as good as Lawrence Co. fans make him out ot be. BTW...I'm not the only guy on here who said Howard.

West was a really good back, on an even better team. Howard and Jones, who I also think is better than West, were great backs on good teams.

CRAZYTAXIDRIVER

Micah was a freshman when I was a junior. He played mop-up games that year, but they were few and far between because we were 6-6. As a sophomore he split carries with leading-rusher Adam Eastwood and leading TD man Josh Stacy. I'd say Micah had 500-600 yards that year. He went off as a junior (2100 & 36 TDs) and had a really good senior year, too.

But as far as I know he didn't miss no more than 1 or 2 games throughout his career.
#39
BTW......Me saying that Howard and Jones are better than West or any other RB may be because I have seen them make more plays than the others due to the fact I've watched them play more games

I realize that.

OK thanx for clearing that up. I personally didn't know. Just what I've heard.

Im surprised no one remembers Chad Cure from Elkhorn City in '98. He led the state in rushing with well over 2000 yards.
#42
The last 4 years the best Rb's that I saw were as followed
1. Doug Howard
2. Matt Slone

Everyone else is too close to call.

Cure was a good RB but he wansn't on the level of Coleman and Howard byt he was a very good high school RB. He also had a very big and good FB in Kenny O'Quinn. Another Pike County RB that was good in the late 90s was Billy Peck from Phelps.

Paul Sullivan was one of the best that has come through Pikeville in a while! Give him some more respect!

This thread ain't about the best RB's to come out of Pikeville in the last 10 years, it's the best to come out of the Mountains, BUT I did have him on my list from the beginning.

Scott Blair, SWHS 1998, Ball State... Lee Renfro, SWHS 2005, Ohio U...Brandon Newell (pawpaw), Somerset H.S. 2003, Thomas More College... I personally watched these guys for years and rank them the best I've seen over the last 10 years in this area. Smile

B.J. Bryant from South Floyd.
didn't get much respect when he was playing. The boys was amazing to watch.
#49

What about Ron Blume? Leading rusher with over 2,000 yards this past season

Big_Ben#7 Wrote:What about Ron Blume? Leading rusher with over 2,000 yards this past season

Don't get me wrong, 2000 yards is a very nice season of rushing, but this was an overall down year for yardage rushers this season. Ashland has had 2 2000 yard backs in the last 9 years and neither won the state rushing title.

1997, Jason Nichols, 11 games, 216 attempts, 2088 yards, 9.7 YPC, 189.9 YPG

2001, Arliss Beach, 12 games, 248 attempts, 2532 yards, 10.2 YPC, 211.4 YPG

2005, Ron Blume, 10 games, 191 attempts, 2040 yards, 10.7 YPC, 204.0 YPG (doesn't include post season game against Madison Southern where I believe he had around 100 yards, but not sure on carries)

West was the best RB in the mountains in the past 10 years, defenses were scared of this boy before they even got off of the bus. When they say #4, they were already beat.
#54
The past 5 years--
Matt Slone- Pburg
Doug Howard- Belfry

From Johnson Central...

Scott Salyer. Basically put the 2000 Golden Eagle team on his back and carried them, especially in the regular season finale against Boyd County (and that was one of the better high school football games I've ever seen). Had he not been injured in the second round against Tates Creek, it's hard to say what might've happened, as that game was 6-0 at halftime and Central had already beaten Tates Creek once that season in Lexington.

Mike Bowlin. Can't believe this name hadn't shown up yet. Had he not gotten injured against Bell County in the 1997 second round game on Log Mountain...Central was leading this game with two minutes left when he hurt his leg and had to come out, then the Bobcats "completed" their bouncing pass in the mud, and then ran right over Bowlin's vacated spot on defense to score their last-second winning touchdown. He's now in medical school at UK. Guy was incredible. I would've liked to have seen what he could've done on the college level somewhere, but he chose to emphasize academics (and I certainly can't argue with that).

I have watched football in eastern ky for over 10 years now and i have played also......The best back i have seen play is Howard from Belfry.  As a freshman he started fullback, as a sophmore split carries with Caudill, junior and senior year split carries with Jones.  He never was the go to back and still put up unreal #'s.  He had the speed to run by you and the strength to just run right over top of you.

Other top backs would be Coleman, Jones, and West.

#58
Doug Howard from Belfry
