I think that the devils this year are gooing to have a difficult time keeping the reputation of russell football alive. But i will not sit here and say that is going to be a down year. From what i have heard, they are working harder than ever in the weightroom and having good successful practices. I think that if they do keep this up and work harder than ever, they will surprise a lot of people with the way things turn out

I didn't know it was dead. The last one or two years does not define the football reputation that you've been building for the last hundred years.

Maroon/White this Thursday. Talked to someone who saw a little of the intersquad scrimmage last week - hard to make anything out with so much substituting. I don't see any of the backfield being the play makers of the past - I hope I'm wrong. Thomson is really small. Musetter is tall but doesn't weigh much. I'm not sure who the fullback is going to be. I read the article on Cooper last week. It made him out to be a hero for only playing a few games. I'm afraid that Ironton will take out Thompson and Cooper. I'm guessing if Cooper isn't at 100% he or the coaches will make up some excuse to keep him out of that game. The paper said Cooper ran a 4.45 - 40. I think he is quick but I would guess more like 4.7 quick not 4.45. This Thursday and Saturday should tell a lot more.

Your first problem is quoting someone else. They had practice. Russell doesn't have
intersquad scrimmages. Thompson will be fine. Mussetter is a receiver, perfect build. The backfield consists of DeHoff, Spradlin, and Thompson. Cooper is a hero on defense, probably the best corner in the area, five interceptions in nine games. Nine games is not a few. Played the entire Raceland game injured.
This team has been working extremely hard and it is paying off. The big question of the line has been answered. The head cases are gone and with all the changes this will be an exciting team to watch.
I realize this forum is to post your opinions but when you bad mouth your team before the season starts, we'd be better off with you wearing green or orange.

Who is going to be playing on the offensive and defensive lines? I figure the skill positions on offense and the linebackers/secondary on defense will be drawn from the same pool of players (Cooper, Spradlin, Thompson, Dehoff, Davidson), but I kind of wonder who won positions on both lines.

The closer it gets, the more excited I am for the season to begin. I can't wait for the Greenup/Russell matchup. I suspect it will be SRO. I have alot of friends from Flatwoods and I wish the Red Devils luck this year, of course, with the exception of the GC matchup.

I don't know if I would pencil Dehoff and Davidson into the secondary. Both seem to be better fits at defensive end.

I agree. I was just pointing out the same guys who typically play QB, RB, and receiver for Russell on offense usually start on defense as well. I notice that Dehoff is actually listed as a DE on the Russell football website this year and Davidson is listed as a LB. So you're probably right in that they won't be the starting safeties this season.
I still wonder, though, who is going to play the line on both sides of the ball? Have any of the big guys gotten faster or more agile? Have any of the small guys gotten significantly bigger and stronger? The only player I can think of that would be a sure bet on the line is Korzep.

You may see Korzep at FB some as well as gaurd. Don't know exactly what the rest of the line will look like but the pieces are there.

Massie, Center
L Bailey, Davidson, Ends
Pierce, Z Bailey, Tackles
Kibby, Korzep, Guards
Def pretty much the same, Pickett will play tackle. Dehoff will be at end, Davidson linebacker, Mussetter and Hurn safety

Thanks for identifying my problems. You are awesome. Practice on the game fields with end zone markers, and players on the sidelines looked like an intersquad scrimmage but I bow down to your exceptional usage of the language of high school football. Mussetter had been in the backfield all year. As an expert on high school nomenclature you probably are already aware of your mistake stating that Mussetter is a "receiver" when russell only has spilt ends in the wing T and does not line up "receivers"; the backfield, tight end, and split ends become receivers after they are beyond the LOS. Finally, don't make the assumption that only fans can comment on these threads and I logged in under "football" and not "cheerleading". If you want to hug the players to make them better you can; for that matter you can also hug the coaches but don't include me in the love fest brother. Finally, the line is weak so I'm not sure what has been resolved. See you at the scrimmage on Saturday but what will be more fun will be seeing you during the Ironton game. I'll assume you'll be the one standing by PC and a few others standing on the sideline without thier pads on. I am glad they are working hard - they need to. :worthy:

You sound like a player of old who holds a grudge because you wandered the sidelines or someone who has a son who's only playing time is practice.

hahaha he sounds like a mad parent who wants his kid to play more. seriously russell grow up and get a real job. see you saturday like its a threat or something! hahahaha wow russell fans sure have gotten something up there pants this year. what a true sport fan. hahaha

Rusell is in trouble against GC this year. GC's D and O line are big, strong and fast. How will Russell be able to stop a D line that will be twice as strong as their O line? Hampton, Kitchen, Grayson and Caudill will have a hay-day.
08-10-2010, 11:13 AM
I won't pretend to be as connected to the football program as Kosar and the rest of my GC brethren, and I'm cautiously optimistic about the prospects of a fine football season, so I'll hold out crowing for a couple more weeks.
08-10-2010, 11:20 AM
Greenup will not have a hay day with Russell up front.
08-10-2010, 12:56 PM
Kosar......You better hope GC does as well as you've built them up to be. They will be better than Normal (Normal being not very good) but I don't see them being that good.
The big Rams play on a saturday in week 1 so I think I will be in LLoyd finding out how good they really are.

For the most part, Russell should be OK this year. I like the names that were listed by Lucifer on the line and I think those guys will do a better job than some are giving them credit for. I look at this year's Russell team much like last year's. They should beat East Carter, Boyd County, West Carter, Fleming County, and Lewis County. The games with Raceland and Greenup County could go either way. They'll be big underdogs in the Ironton, Ashland, and Mason County games. I would love to see them pull off an upset in any of those 3 games, but those teams will all be very good this season.
As for Greenup County beating Russell this year, I am just numb to all the message board talk about how the Musketeers have greatly improved. We read it year after year. They were supposed to have been much better last year, but lost to Russell 37-0. Maybe this is the year things really are different for Greenup, but like Ram-a-Devil said, we'll find out quickly whether or not Greenup has greatly improved because they play Ashland in week 1 at Greenup. If they stay close to the Tomcats, then maybe there is reason to believe in Lloyd.

Yup I agree RP... Every year I hear how it's Greenup and Fairview's turn in the area.. Never seems to happen.. But like you said maybe it's true this year..
