Hatfield-McCoy Bowl
#31
Ky should stop playing this game if the set up can not be changed.
#32
By no means am I a Yogi or a Matewan fan, but you guys are ridiculous. You have a built in excuse for getting beat. It's automatically the refs' fault!

Do things need to change? I'm sure they do, but get over yourselves with thinking you always get cheated. If WV puts more emphasis on the game that is KY's fault.

I went to school in WV and my kids go in KY, so I really do not care who wins. I really get tired of it always being the some elses fault when someone gets beat.

phs1986 Wrote:The thing of it is one, it's hard to get the boys to come out and play when they know it's going to be a joke... The ref's are from WV, and WV goes waaayyyyy out in the state and gets kids to play. KY can't get any kids from Lexington, Louisville, etc. Second, it's always, and I mean always held at Matewan. From what I've been told, this is Coach Kinder's brain pop, therefore, he holds it (hosts it) each and every year. Attendance was down last year from years past that I saw. The only reason I went was to watch a child play that I consider one of my own. If not for him, I wouldn't have went!

I do think this needs to be rotated each year to keep interest in the game. It would bring a nice crowd back, I believe by flip-flopping it. NOT saying that it should just be held at Belfry but heck, find a couple of nice fields in KY and host it one year in Matewan, one year in Belfry. Next year back at Matewan, and then to another field..... IMHO, this is becoming a joke to the kids who are asked to play in it especially the ones from KY. I know there have been a lot of talent playing on both sides but no where near the area to choose from in KY. We have the area, just not allowed to use it! LOL.....

Tell me HOW FAR WV goes out in the state to get players????? That's just it they don't. They get kids from Wayne,Mingo, Logan and sometimes Wyoming County. Kentucky gets kids from Pike ,Martin,Johnson and Floyd Counties that I know of maybe somewhere else. So how is it unfair for the Kentucky squad? As far as attendance last year it wasn't down at all. When the K-Bowl went flop this game set idle for years. Matewan decide to take it and make it there annual football fund raiser. Everybody had the chance to get it restarted but know one did. Why rotate it? If Belfry had started this game do you think they would want to rotate it with anybody else? NO! Everyone should come and support the kids from their schools and enjoy the game.

Maybe your more of a fan of them then you thank but anyway year before
last out of seven or eight kids Belfry had they had two to play in this peace of crap game leave it over there get ready of the crap that has been running the thing then it will make money and more good kids will play in it.

I hate to say it but this Kentucky roster, if final, will get thrashed by WV. Rotate the game between KY and WV or put it out of its misery.
#43
Yea, thanks for the roster but I have to agree with the last guy, this is a game that at least on paper Ky can't win, no players from Belfry, Pikeville or Letcher Co. WVa has 6 players from Man the Class A State Runner-Up & bunch from Gilbert near as good. Oddly enough WVa has no players from Matewan or Williamson!
#44
It's my understanding that players from Belfry and Pikeville were selected, but chose not to participate. For what ever reason this Bowl Game gets a lot of negative publicity in Kentucky. Perhaps that has a lot to do with these players chosing not to participate. Or maybe it is the timing of the game, maybe they have gotten over the fact that won't be playing football again. What ever the reason- GOOD LUCK to the Kentucky Squad this weekend. For many this is the last time they will be suiting up to play the game they love so much. Give it all you've got and don't leave any regrets out there. Justin, Chris, Josh C, Josh B, Austin, Logan, Zac and Hunter- remember the Blackcat and Rebels fans will combine this Saturday to cheer you on. Make Floyd County proud! 10-0 and 9-1 isn't to shabby. Good Luck Boys- let's bring this one home to Kentucky!

Latest update 4 Man players are all playing not 6.Weak Tug Valley is sending the most players 5. WVa has 21 players (3 Qb's) compared to Ky's 23 players, weak Williamson is sending 3 surprised players, none from Matewan! Look for Ky to pull offf the upset!
#46
It is a shame that this game has come to this no players from Belfry or Pikeville or Letcher Co. Last year the KY team had three boys off a team that didn't win a game and was that teams 2nd string lineman that what the KY team has come to the good players wont play.
#47
i also played in 2003 when we won and trust me the refs was horrible that game also. i really wasn't supposed to play but i did. i know we had a few kids on that team go to small colleges and play. the coaching staff was from pikeville college too and that helped alot.

Coach Parsons invited them to play that's all he can do. I think Belfry had a big lineman that is playing or was suppose to according to Coach Parsons. Kids now days have to many other things they would rather do.

Final Score

WV 20 KY 0
#50
Here's what I got from the radio.
Off. MVP B.J. Roberts
Def. MVP Austin Mckinney
Scholarship winner Chris Stumbo

Also the final was 20 to 0. I think the calls according to Joe Kinzer was 16 to 4 in favor of WV. I think KY had some chances but some dropped balls, botched snaps, and a fumble really had the ky team back pedaling. I now think they should drop the bowl. Joe said the crowd was down really bad, did anyone go that could give any more info????

I left at halftime. For KY, just nowhere near the talent that could be out there. It's ridiculous.

Well hope springs eternal I guess!

I never said the crowd was down. The stadium was about 90 percent full. I never mentioned the amount of penalties for both teams because I didn't even keep that stat. Majority of the penalties were procedure and holding. The game dragged because of the penalties.

Thanks Joe for clearing this up.

Info from a reliable source.... Thomas Varney from Belfry was NOT contacted about playing. Not sure he would have played but this just goes to show you that there is talent out there that is not considered or asked to participate...... I'm glad I was at the movies... LOL...

I know for a FACT that Thomas's coach was contacted about him playing.

So, basically your calling his father a liar? Maybe this could be the problem as the coach/game administrator should obtain a list of players they are interested in for each team, get their contact info, and contact them themselves! BTW, WHAT coach are you implying? Thomas no longer has a coach as he has already graduated from high school... ????
