Once again, there is no "official" class A championship. At least not one that is recognized by the KHSAA. The KHSAA recognizes six different state champions in football, one for each class. There is only one state champion in boys' basketball, and that's the team that wins the Sweet Sixteen in March.

So what is going on down at the Expo? Simply put, it's a tournament called the All-A Classic, sponsored by the Touchstone Energy company. Just like the Toyota Classic or even the Pikeville Invitational, it is just a tournament that crowns a winner. The organizers of this event set the criteria for what constitutes a "A" school, and only those schools are eligible to participate in the tournament. Local schools such as SV, P-Burg, and Sheldon Clark obviously fell under the cutoff point, likely as a result of declining enrollments in recent years.

In the end, though, there is no such thing as a basketball "class A championship" in the state of Kentucky. There will be a winner of the All-A Classic tournament, but they will simply be the tournament champion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks, that helps alot.... But it just seems so strange how powerful the KHSAA aways acts that they would not be a part to this.. Their must be something for them in this......

I suspect that the KHSAA wants no part of recognizing an "official" class A champion, since that might be the first step toward completely separating all Kentucky schools into classes for basketball. Some might then say, if you have a class A champion, why not a 2A champion too? And then a 3A champ, and so on...

If all that happened, the Sweet Sixteen as we know it would be a distant memory.

Completely agree. Kentucky has something special in the state sweet sixteen so I would hope that they would never tamper with it.

If Pburg can turn this one into a half-court game and limit second chance points for Valley, then they have a chance at making this a good game. I think a lot depends on the decision making of Burchett. He shows signs of a good guard at times, but at other times he looks to force things, whether that be a shot or a pass, which really can turn the momentum in a game quickly. Tincher and Patrick will need to have another good game for Pburg to have any chance. The same can be said for Stumbo, Hall, and Setser too. They gotta play smart and be ready for this mentally, because Valley has a really good team and they have the ability to put games away quickly.

Best of luck to both... Go Blackcats!

Guess the burchett kid is the only guard on the team?
