Crowd fights at HSBB games
#31
Raceland/Greenup 1995 both pep sections met on the floor after the game. 3 cops and a few administration trying to break up 60+ kids fighting. It got ugly.

Knott County and Hazard at memorial gym. It happened in 87 or 88.

My best name/mascot in high school history has to be The Hellier Hellcats.

With a name like that, there had to be some crazy fights at that place.

Surprisingly, no. That is just perception from the nickname. Their was your typical stuff from what I've been told, nothing liked you would expect.

Pulp Fiction Wrote:Referee's can cause a riot faster than anything....

If they calling a game loose, then call a few 'touch' fouls against the team A. But they let team B play rugby without fouls being called. Then team A does the same thing and fouls are called. That causes everybody to get upset at each other..... from the coaches, players and fans.

I have never been to a game where a crowd fight has broke out. And I have been to a lot of basketball games in the 14th, 15th and 16th region.

I've heard some stories from a Johnson Central vs. Lawrence Co. game in the 80's.

I had a front row seat for this one. I sat directly behind where the press table now sits. The thing I remember is that while things were happening throughout the gym one Lawrence County player was flat backed by a Central player in the middle of the center circle at half court. But I'm old and have been to a lot of games according to you. My main memory of an altercation is from a game where I went to watch two teams that I really did not have an interest in. I was sitting in the second row in the visitors section and a fan rode the referee the entire night until enough was enough. The referee blew his whistle to stop play and walked over to the section and hand-motioned that the fan was ejected. As the referee turned to go to the scorers table the fan dived directly over me as I sat in the stands and tackled the referee on the court and lit his head until a cop standing on the base line politely knocked the fan dead out. Believe it or not I went back to that school for another game with a different opponent. The home fans had heckled a player from the other team all night. One fan in particular. Later in the game the player saved a ball from going out of bounds and his momentum carried him out of bounds and up the isle in the home teams pep section. When he came to a stop he was face to face with the heckler and it was on. Guess if you go to enough games you will see anything. And no, I was not at the Paintsville and Prestonsburg classic.

Nothing like a good fight breaking out near Pep sections but the parents or fans are generally the worst.Seen some stands clearing out but there is always that one fan that goes bonkers and pure mayhem ensues.Almost every high school has one fan that lives for these moments and they are ready to fight at the sound of a whistle!:truestory:

1992 Paris vs Nicholas co 1st round of district. Daniel Brown for Nicholas put 50 on Alvin Sims, Juan Byars & Paris at Paris to beat them. After the game a mob of Paris students numbering 30-40, waited in hiding in the bushes near Hardee's next to their bus, until Nicholas' band was ready to board their bus. The Paris mob of kids jumped out and beat the living day lights out of every band member and the band director. Destroyed their instruments as they were beating them with them. Police came and the mob dispersed & no one was ever caught

My freshman year (2004) Rockcastle and Cawood had a small tussle at the end of OT. Game was at cawood and at this time they were the top two teams in region with Hubbs playing for Cawood and Cash at Rock. Cawood won the game and the student rushed the floor. words were exchanged, and punches where thrown. I remember we sat in the locker room for hour (police orders) waiting on people to leave so we could exit the gym safely. What made this incident more intense was the 13th region was held at cawood later that year and these two played in the first round. Ive been apart of some big games before through out my highschool and college days, but the region game was the craziest atmosphere I have ever witnessed. The gym was packed before we had even got to school. Rock would win the region game, and was escorted to the locker room by state troopers as the final seconds ran off the clock.

Seems I heard about a big fight between Ashland and Russell in the early seventies. Anyone recall that?

I've heard ghost stories of Belfry and Pike Central fighting as soon as the ball was thrown up for the opening tip-off.....

Anybody know if that is true or a ghost story.

In the semi finals breathitt was beating Powell 23 points in the third quarter when the referee took over and in the finals perry was up 21 late in the third quarter when the lights went out ans the referee started making horrible calls. I was later told that one of the referees was a college roommate of Powells head coach
