And you must be from the mountains to understand that statement!!

I know we are talking about current mountains but i have to throw in there the duo of Old Bent Mtn and old Coburn Mtn. Those two together were awful for the visiting teams coming to old Vipperman Stadium in Death Vally to play the Pirates. Now new 4 lane mountains are in place and are not nearly as bad.

I'm assuming there is a lot of "history" from that Mountain.

Sure. In this area "Lynch" mountain is famous for having been one of the worst road games a team could play. It is always 10 to 15 degrees colder up there and you are not far from the highest point in Kentucky. Technically, that's Black mountain, but Pine mountain runs right up to it. During football season it can snow up there at the drop of a hat. My grandfather once told me that that Mountain was famous for freezing rain, especially on Friday night's. Very seldom did a visiting team leave off that mountain victorious. The"Lynch East Main Bulldogs" is where Harlan Co. get's it's football history.

Great post! Love hearing little tidbits like that about mother nature's home field advantage.

I'm gonna say one of the roughest mountains is Ball Fork Mountain in the Stone area of Belfry :-)

I've been to many games played on this field, and I swear to you, it was cold in July!! I remember one year, it was snowing like crazy, and my daddy brought a coleman lantern to the game with us. We lit it and put it on the bleachers under a quilt to try and keep warm!!

My parents called this a "blue snow" because it was so cold. It only took us two and a half hours to drive the 20 miles or so to get home that night! The snow was so deep, that it kept pileing up in front of the car. Whenever it would start to dim the head lights, daddy would have to stop, get out and clear them off.
