Generally, the WYMT television viewing area. Another way to look at it, roughly everything east of I-75 and south of I-64. You can nitpick on the far borders but that's gonna cover the great majority.
WYMT-TV viewing area basically.
If you have to ask you are probably not from here...

I agree with what you are saying but really you can't go exclusively by either one of those boundary examples because Somerset and Pulaski Co. are west of I 75 and WYMT airs in eastern parts of Lexington. The "mountain schools" know who they are,it's just that most people in the northern and western parts of the state don't know. Someone from BGR should make a list of the "BGR Mountain Schools". It would at least put an end to this thread that pops up every few months. Just say'n.
As I've said before, WYMT is great, but there were mountains and mountain teams before them.
To me, it's the schools in the 13th, 14th and 15th basketball/baseball regions.
My vote would be for Black Mountain. It's the highest.

Im going to do this once and only once since it must completely annoy the hell out of you NKY folks that there is a such thing as the mountains.

Whats funny is, a thread wont open itself, and people shouldnt have to explain. Its different when someone asks politely, but to be an ass about it is ignorant.

Below is a list of what is considered mountain football teams.
Somebody can correct me if any are wrong but i think its pretty close.

Allen Central
Ashland
Belfry
Bell County
Betsy Layne
Boyd County
Breathitt County
Clay County
Corbin
East Ridge
Estill County
Harlan
Harlan County
Hazard
Jackson County
Jenkins
Johnson Central
Knott Central
Knox Central
Lawrence County
Leslie County
Letcher County
Lynn Camp
Magoffin County
Middlesboro
North Laurel
Paintsville
Perry County
Phelps
Pike County Central
Pikeville
Pineville
Powell County
Prestonsburg
Pulaski County
Rockcastle County
Shelby Valley

South Laurel
Southwestern
Whitley County

Also, non football playing schools such as
Barbourville
Red Bird
OBI
Buckhorn
Wolfe County
Lee County
Cordia
Owsley County
Riverside Christian

Now you know, and anyone else that want to know can look to this thread for reference.
As you can see, the "little mountains" is actually a huge area.
Bigger than other areas frequently mentioned on this site such as NKY, Central, WKY, Lville teams, etc.

if Ashland is in there, wouldnt you put Raceland and Russell
cuppett777 Wrote:if Ashland is in there, wouldnt you put Raceland and Russell

Just going by what ive seen on WYMT.
It may be where Ashland always plays mountain teams, but they seem to always be on there.
Ive see Russell on there as well, but its usually only playing mountain teams, raceland i have never seen mentioned.

The Ashland and Boyd County thing was the only one i wasnt sure about, but seeing as to how they play mountain teams all the time, i wasnt sure.
Other than that, i dont think there is any mistakes.

i thought some of those schools were lex area.
are there no 6a mountain teams?

if any one wants to know NKY is all the schools in the northern 3 most counties of ky. campbell, kenton and boone. other counties are sometimes thrown in there but it is really just the three.

I didnt mean to point that at you directly, but every year we get atleast 2 to 3 trolls that start threads like these just to make fun of the mountains, when in reality, there are a lot of people that enjoy talking about and discussing it.
Probably more than any other region in the state.
Also there ar eno mountain schools in the lex area.

There are no 6A mountain schools.

When there were 4 classes, you had Whitley, North Laurel, South Laurel, Johnson Central (for a little while), and Southwestern Pulaski as 4A schools, but after the realignment there is only 5A and lower schools.

Someone said anything east of i 75 and south of i 64, but there are some exceptions to that such as pulaski county schools and some who are right on i75, and just a little dab west of the interstate

So, basically it's the 13th, 14th and 15th regions, plus Rockcastle, Morgan and the Pulaski schools?
How many did I miss?

Mountain Football is the most underated football in KY!!!! PERIOD
It's were the men are men and the sheep are scared.

Confusednicker:
"Someone said anything east of i 75 and south of i 64, but there are some exceptions to that such as pulaski county schools and some who are right on i75, and just a little dab west of the interstate"

And you must be from the mountains to understand that statement!!

Granny Bear, you might be from the mountains if you understand that statement, but, you have to be from the mountains to say it.Lol

IMO, if you have Lawrence, Boyd and Ashland, you have to have Rowan, Carter, and Elliot Co. in the list as well as all the other schools in Boyd and Greenup Counties. You're hop skipping over them to get to Ashland and Boyd.
OP did make me laugh.

As for the question at hand, it is clearly Pine Mountain.

Black Mountain is overrated IYAM... sure it is the tallest mountain, but it doesn't have anything on the length and history associated with Pine Mountain.
It's so much easier to say regions 13, 14 and 15.
birdman44 Wrote:what the hell? what area is the "mountains"

A better description would be the 13th, 14th and 15th basketball regions,
with a few more in 12 and 16.
Starfire Hill FTW lol.
Birdman, I think Pine mountain is the best mountain in the mountains. Black mountain isn't too bad either.

Pine Mountain definitely belongs in this discussion, but you can't argue with Black Mountain being on top. One thing is for certain, all the mountains in the mountains are definitely on the rise.
