Lack of Talent in KY
#61
Last period football class doesn't hurt either Vikingfan. All you said was spot on.

Hatz Wrote:Could one reason be population (and hence the numbers of kids in the quality pool)?

The states you mentioned are ranked (9) Georgia, (4) Florida, (2) Texas, (23) Alabama and (1) California - in terms of population.

By comparison, KY ranks #26 in state population.

Obviously the anomaly is Alabama but I'm sure tradition and the major metropolitan areas that are in the state dwarf the number of similar size cities in KY.

Kentucky 4.3M
compared to

California 37M
Florida 18M

It's just like in the state of Kentucky - Why is Louisville area more dominant in Football as a whole than EKY - Pure population

I am not trying to be politically incorrect but it would be complete idiocy not to believe that population and demographics play a major role in this talent differential especially the African-American population. Listed below are the states that have been discussed and their African-American population.

African-American Population

California - 2,476,431
Texas - 2,849,976
Florida - 2,903,045
Pennsylvania - 1,322,390
Ohio - 1, 355, 337
Georgia - 2,887,822
Alabama - 1,221,417
Kentucky - 326,391

The differential in this population makes a huge difference.
Most of the 326,000 live in the Louisville area.

From Wikipedia:

"Today 44.2% of Kentucky's African American population is in Jefferson County and 52% are in the Louisville Metro Area. Other areas with high concentrations, besides Christian and Fulton Counties, are the city of Paducah, the Bluegrass, and the city of Lexington. Many mining communities in far Southeastern Kentucky also have populations between five and 10 percent African American."

African-American Population:

Jefferson County - 18.88%
Oldham County - 4.21 % (La Grange 5.09%)
Shelby County - 8.83 % (Shelbyville 16.35%)
Hardin County - 11.87% (Elizabethtown 9.70%)
Bullitt County - .38 % (Shepherdsville .35%)
Spencer County - 1.13% (Taylorsville 7.83%)

Cincy St. X upsets Colerain 24 to 23. Trinity losing to them doesn't make them a bad team.

Just happen to be watching a show on tv right now called "The Ride" about 8 high school quaterbacks going to a "Football University Camp" out of the eight quaterbacks 2 are from Kentucky.
#66
Very familiar with "the ride". I have been on staff @ many FBU camps across the country.
We all know KY has produced a fair share of good QBs. Doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. You saw what happened to Tim Couch once he got to the pros. Great H.S. QB (man among boys), product of an offensive system contained within a terrible football program @ UK and a huge flop on Sundays. At least he got paid and married a Playboy Playmate. Not too bad for an old KY boy...
#67
Are you saying you can't have a good football team without African-Americans? Wow!

One of the problems for Tim Couch is that he went to the expansion team, the Cleveland Clowns, who had no offensive line and he stayed injured.

And, according to close contacts, within the Browns organization, he couldn't pick up the playbook. I agree that the lack of a decent O-line contributed to his early exit. Hey, he made it to the NFL though. I give him some credit.

No, but I am saying in most instances that the good teams star athletes are generally African-American. How many of the top twenty high school teams in the nation are all white without African-American players. It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to look at college football, the NFL, and all the states previously discussed and determine who the better players generally are, especially in the skill positions. I am not making this racial, just stating the facts as I am as lily white as they come.

Evidently no one has as the Clowns have been consistent. Consistently pathetic.

Still doesn't make much sense, if I remember right when Tim was in high school he was chosen the #1 division I draft pick in the nation, making it in Sports Illustrated on different occasions and also receiving all kinds of national reconition. Then becoming the #1 draft pick in the nation, saying all that to say this: if there is so much smarter and greater football programs out there it looks like they would be able to know true talent when they see it and not make a 60 million dollar mistake. I thought Tim's problem was getting beat up too much by a new franchise offensive line (from other states than Ky.) that couldn't protect him.

Personnally I think parents need to get real. First, little johnny might be a great high school player, and you need to embrace that. Please don't count on that to pay his college tuition. Tuition is something you need to save for regardless and shame on you if you did not. Little John does not need to be pressured into a school he hates only because he has a scholly to a school that he hates and is tired of the game. That only leads to little Johnny becoming a college drop out and lost. Encourage them to go to a college and get and education. It may cost you but, your a parent and that is what parents do, they educate their children and prepare them for life.

It is a very low percentage of high school kids that go onto DI full scholly's. You would have better chance at the gambling boats . (if that is your thing)

And even then , the chances of your kid making it into the pros is slim to none. Give your child and education at all cost. It is the best thing you can do for your child.

In general, blacks are better athletes. That said, since 1999 the Boyle County football team has been 98.7% European American. Many years their were no black players or none that started. Obviously that isn't the case this year. The point is that Boyle has done quite well with European American players and beaten many teams with predominantly black rosters.

:thanks:

AHEM.....

Boyle County linebacker Lamar Dawson one of 16 finalists for U.S. Army National player of the year!

Obviously you didn't read my post. I said that it wasn't the case this year. Go back and read the post carefully and THEN comment, playa. AHEM... :dontthink

That is just beating teams in Kentucky. The argument was why teams from the states previously listed have better athletes then teams in Kentucky and if you look at their rosters, and the demographics and populations of those states, it proves my point. There are going to be exceptions with certain teams and coaches but it is what it is, exceptions.

The differential in this population makes a huge difference.

Here is your reason. And no, you aren't being politically incorrect by listing these facts. The sooner our society as a whole quits being afraid of intelligently addressing intangibles and demographic make-ups of the differnt parts of our society, as they relate to sports, acadmics, etc. The better off all of us will be (white, black, hispanic, purple, yellow, green..all the same).

Very good post and very true.

Orangenowblue you are dead on in your statement!! Couch could have still been at this point a dominant Franchise player. As soon as the announcement was made that he was going to Cleveland i started to have great doubt. Piece by piece they destroyed his career!

I lived in Hoover - Hoover is a part of Birmingham. The city of Birmingham is probably 200,000 people. The metro area is closer to 1.5 million. Lots of talented athletes down there and some pretty good programs.

Louisville is nothing to sneeze at (Lexington is not nearly as strong). But neither city can compete with Birmingham when it comes to football. Neither could compete with Mobile and it's surrounding area either.
#82
Birmingham and the surrounding area has some very talented players as does Mobile. But there is a reason that only two teams have played against national competition out of Alabama.

That may be true, but that doesn't change the fact that it dwarfs Kentucky football. Florida, Georgia and Louisiana are all stronger states for football than Alabama when it comes to high school.
#84
The football teams in Kentucky are as good as the football Teams in Alabama across the board.
