Coach StuartPIKEVILLE – Pikeville High School is searching for a new girls’ high school basketball and golf coach.

Veteran coach Cindy Stuart was informed on March 26 by PHS Athletic Director Kevin Garris and Principal Michael Rowe she was not being rehired to coach basketball next season.

Stuart then told school officials she was stepping down as golf coach.

“I am proud of the girls’ basketball and girls’ golf teams during my tenure as coach,” Stuart said. “I am proud of the job I did.”

Stuart said she plans to return to coaching in the future.

“I fully expect to return to coaching and possibly athletic administration where the right opportunity presents itself,” Stuart said.

Stuart, a graduate of Belfry High School and a member of the Belfry High School Athletic Hall of Fame, was a senior captain on the 1984 state runner-up team.

She went on to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on a basketball scholarship and was a member of the 1985 and 1986 Southern Conference Championship teams.

Stuart was an assistant coach at Belfry from 1990-1992 and was named the head coach in 1992. During her tenure at Belfry, her teams won eight consecutive 60th District titles 1993-2000 and three 15th regional championships in 1996, 1997, and 1999. From 2000-03.

She was employed in the Floyd County School System where she served as the head coach at Allen Central for three seasons.

Her last Allen Central team captured the 2003 58th District championship.

Since coming to Pikeville, Stuart’s teams have captured both the 2004 and 2008 59th District Titles as well as the 2005 All “A” Classic 15th Regional championship.

In her 20 seasons as a head coach, her teams have combined to garner 11 district championships in three different districts.

This past season’s Pikeville High School team advanced to the 15th Region semi-finals.

Her career coaching record to date is 328-233.

In golf, she has coached the Pikeville High School girls’ team for the past seven seasons. The Lady Panthers have qualified for the KHSAA State Golf Tournament each of the past five seasons since 2007 and for the All “A” State Golf Tournament for the past six seasons.

Her 2009 team won the 15th Region All “A” Tournament.
