Grant Co Coaching Search
#1
Any word on how the search is going? Thought they would have announced a coach by now since they were one of the first to have an opening

I guess Raines said no..... He was offered the job , per a Grant County board member.. I guess he declined. Thats been about 2 weeks ago

He did not like the work load and did not want the job. Very few districts can pay people just to coach this day and age. I think Raines was looking for a cake job but could not get that in Grant Co. and most likely will not get it anywhere.

Grant will be hard pressed to hire a "good" coach.

Do any schools in KY pay a coach just to coach and earn a full living salary? most Head coaches earn between 6000-8000 and on a rare occasion over the $10K level

Actually some do. Not many but some.

I thought there is a cap? I'm pretty sure it's based on tenure and I have never heard of anyone's salary just for football being over $12,000.

Its a trend and it will eventually be everywhere! There are many coaches at the H.S. level across the country and theres some in Ky that only coach.

Tenure has nothing to do with football coaching salaries. There are quite a few coaches that make over 12 G's for just being a head coach.

Can you give me an example, I as a HS coach in another sport would love to know where you get your facts.

Quite a few only coach. I didn't say that. My point is unless it's someone retired, there is no way someone is pulling in a $40K salary, or enough to live on. We have a few NKY coaches that are retired, so I do know that there are "Coaches Only", but not in the sense that one can live off of a HS coaches salary!

Because of Title IX and equity issues High School head coaches make about the same within a district. Some schools will have a tiered pay scale - Paying football, Basketball (boys and girls head coach the same), and maybe baseball/softball at one tier and the minor sports at a lower tier. So if someone is paying their head football coach $12,000 then they are also paying the girls basketball coach the same.

You are dead-on correct! I know coaches received stipends from Boosters, but that is not considered salary.

Like I said Tenure has nothing to do with how a coach is paid...I know this first hand.

Lol, maybe we are playing with words. Tenure on the job most certainly will top you out of what you are allowed to make. A five you coach, taking on a new school, rarely ever receives the max. As he stays and proves himself, the school all add up to the max to the coaches salary. And that I know as fact.

Example Ft. Thomas Highlands (I hear they have a pretty good team)
pays the following
Football 9,021
Football Asst. 6,438
Football Asst. 6,438
Football Asst. 6,438
Football Asst. 6,438
Football Asst. 6,438
Football ‐ Equipment Manager 1,435
Football‐ Freshman 6,438
Football‐ Frosh Asst. 4,193

and
Basketball ‐ Boys 7,955
Basketball ‐ Girls 7,955
Basketball‐ Assistant Boys 3,199
Basketball‐ Assistant Girls 3,199

Coaches do not make enough to live on alone. All public school salaries for coaches are public records and anyone can find them(I found Highlands on their district website). Or you could request them from the district and they by law must release the information to you

That maybe fact for you and your school but that is NOT the case across the state. Tenure for a state teacher is 4 years and 1 day on the job...it for job security only. Years experience is another thing.

Tenure, as in length on the job, not a "Tenured Teacher"!
#21
Regardless...a coaches' "tenure" isn't always included in the stipend or coaching salary.

Coaching positions is only a one year position as are all extra curricular. No such thing legally as coaching tenure. Schools have until May 15 of each year to inform a coach/sponsar if they do not want them to preform that extra duty.

Not sure what your point is NKY

Jon Resuch applied, he helped Mr. Monty Jo Lovell start the program at Grant back in the early 90's. I believe he also started the football program at Silver Grove, not sure where thats even at, just heard it. Also that they have not even started interviewing and will not until atleast next month which is only less then a week away.
Eric Herrman may have applied from what I hear. He has been an assistant under Coach Davis and under Coach Bowlin (now at EJ) when he was at Grant.
#28
Coach Dazell from Grants Middle School program was another one that people wanted him to apply because of his success for quite sometime at the middle school level. (big difference from middle to high though) Apparently he did not want to and is happy as the middle school coach.

that a person can NOT make a living off of coaching any high school sports. Some districts will pay based on years experience (Boone County Schools do) but most pay a base salary with increases in salaries very limited. And coaching tenure means absolutely nothing. Extra curricular activities are all one year contracts. "tenure" means you can not be removed from the job without cause teachers can earn it in a public school (not in the privates) but that does not apply for coaches. I've been with good coaches who have been fired because the superintendent had an issue with the coach(not the principal or the athletic director). This coach had had success making third round of the playoffs but was let go
