Handchecking - Point of emphasis this year
#1
I dropped by KC last night to watch some of the Pan-o-rama games there last night. I left wondering who would actually be able to win the 13th region, the best team or the team with the most depth. I was amazed at the number of fouls called during the 3 games. The assigning official was there and it looked like a ref. training session(believe me, they really need one!). All six teams were in the double bonus by the begining of the second quarter and the begining of the forth quarter due to dozens of handchecking calls. Some of the 13th region favorites will struggle if this is enforced during the season.

I can see if a player uses a handcheck to gain an advantage, but last night was a little overboard IMO. I saw 12 of the regions officials call last night and I hope for the sake of the teams there is better ones that didnt show up. One official literally blew his whistle only ONE time during a complete game. This was said by a bookkeeper who was marking down which official was making the calls and the frequency. I hope things smooth out or we will be watching 2-3hr games that are decided by depth and FT shooting.

Refs have been told to enforce it.
Also that all fouls will be called.

Thanks for pointing that out. Hence the title of my post. It would be a wonderful world if the second sentence of your post was true. :eyeroll:

Well your post was based on what you saw during a game.
My post was based on what the KHSAA has told me to do while I officiate games.
I'll make sure not to reference anything involving your thread titles in the future.

I want to see how long it lasts, when refs go into say CLAY CO. and foul out 4-5 of their starters, we will see how long the handchecking lasts. Teams like Clay, HC, North and South, Whitley have always played in your face pressure D and this will greatly limit that approach. Unless a player is gaining an advantage, the trivial Handchecks I am seeing called are a joke. This is typical KHSAA though, instead of working to clean up the whole game, they find one thing and radically move on it. I have a better idea, how about actually teach the refs to call a competent game. The 13th region is in for yet another poor season of officiating once again. It is obvious that most of the guys/gals are in it for the money. If they call all the handchecks in a game, the games will last 2hrs. I cant wait to see how the boys games go since they are way more agressive on D.

I know what you mean, but the overall games around the state last year were just too physical.
Technical fouls, ejections, and fights were all elevated last year so refs are being told to call games tight.
